aMatticle
I receive the regular new cache notifications by email. Which is nice. What I'd like is some indication of distance from my home location, as per my profile. However, the caches reported seem to be randomly scattered. (and there's no finer location detail in the short description than "UK") At the bottom it says: *** System note: We tried to use the zipcode in your profile but it was not found in the database. Please check your profile to make sure the zipcode you entered is correct. Is what I want a feature that's only available to US cachers? Why can't it search by coordinate, and display distance to the new caches? Cheers, Matt-> Quote Link to comment
markandlynn
Have you entered your home coordinates on the profile page?. and have you set your home country to UK click on your name in the top right hand corner after logging in and the correct pages for changing your details etc should come up. Hope this helps. Quote Link to comment
aMatticle
Yes, that's all OK. Searching for caches near me in the site is not a problem, It's just the email alerts that could be locationised (sorry!) but are not. Do you get email alerts, and are they specific to your location within the UK? Quote Link to comment
+TeamG
Personally, I get notified of all new ones in the UK. I would of thought it it would be the same for everyone else who has registed with United Kingdom as the country. If you want to be notified of ones nearer you, you will need to set up a pocket query.(members only feature) Quote Link to comment
aMatticle
OK Thanks for the data point. It could be a bit of a bug, then, that "The System" warns about the non-functioning of a feature that, sadly, in our case we have not got. Quote Link to comment
+roolku
I think markandlynn got it right - you need to set your home co-ordinates. I got my notification sorted by distance from home until I disabled it in favour of pocket queries. Roolku Quote Link to comment
+Belplasca
I'm in the UK. I've registered a UK postcode. I get lists sorted by distance from my postcode. For all the new caches in the UK. However, your error message was "We tried to use the zipcode in your profile but it was not found in the database" Which would suggest that your postcode is not, err, found in the database. You have entered a postcode, haven't you? If you have, then it is obviously not in the database, so why not get the postcode for a nearby shop or library or something and try that? It may just be that your postcode is new and genuinely not in the database - so give it one that is! Bob Aldridge Quote Link to comment
+Brenin Tegeingl
I tried with my post code, to no sucesse. Entered details in wgs84, now no problems. Note that you don't have to use the actual coords for home, it could be for a local park, or simular. Works great until you take in the fact it's in Croms (Crow Miles), I have several near to me, which are shown as being about 12 miles away (and I can actualy see them from home) but invoves a road trip of about 40 miles each way. aMatticle
Balplasca, Why should my postcode not be in the database? It's not new, AFAIK. Is the database incomplete/sparse? Does it not cover *all* valid UK postcodes, degrading as necessary to the known most significant codes? Meanwhile, I'll try and register a home coordinate in some other way, pace Macunian Pyro (something I'm sure I've already done, since on-line cache searches work just fine). Quote Link to comment
aMatticle
Possible answer: The postcode I had listed in My Cache Page -> edit profile was the correct one. However My Cache Page -> Update Home Coordinates had a bogus postcode. No Lat Long at all and 98112 as the "postcode". I can guess what's been happening. Who would have thought that there were *two* places to put a postcode? Quote Link to comment

Does it not cover *all* valid UK postcodes, degrading as necessary to the known most significant codes? No idea why your postcode should be unrecognised, but that's what the message says... I have a few mapping programs and certain postcodes don't show up in there, so it would seem as though some of the databases are incomplete... Or maybe there's a typo in your entered postcode - or its equivalent in the database... Have you tried giving yourself a different postcode to see if that works? Of course, the lists are only sent out weekly, so you'll have to wait to see if it works... regards Bob Aldridge Belplasca Quote Link to comment
markandlynn
Just a thought have you put a space in the middle of the post code? I also have a number underneath my home co-ordinates maybe its the sites way of converting UK post codes into US Zip format? Quote Link to comment
