El Diablo Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 As most of you know I make Geo-Hiking Staffs. I've just found out that GC offers a Geocaching Medallion My question is, do you think most people would prefer this or my hand carved one? The medallions are very cool! The only draw back is that they are about 1/4 size of my hand carved ones. On the other hand they would save me a lot of time. What do you think? El Diablo Quote
TeamK-9 Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 I think it may be a cool thing to offer, but you should still keep on making hand carved ones too... Quote
marmetion Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Are you going to be adding the medallion to the stick? or is the customer? The way I see it, give the customer the right to choose, and if they request the medallion, recess it into the staff for a smooth grip or look, then charge for medallion, and the stocking, shipping and handling charges to maintain the medallions on site, otherwise just hand carve the design and let the customer buy the medallion and put it on themself..... just my 2 cents, so that will be $5.02, $5 for the advice, and $.02 to recover my costs Quote
Nappy10 Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 I think hand carved craftsmanship is always preferred over mass production. Quote
Renegade Knight Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 (edited) Unless you bolt it to the stick or use glue so strong the stick will break before the medalian disloges, you are better off carving them. It's the carving that makes your hicking sticks much appreciated. Stick with success. Edit: Besides if we ever meet at a party and get into a heated debate I don't want a bunch of weighted clubs around you within easy reach. Edited July 19, 2004 by Renegade Knight Quote

Huntnlady Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Hand made always beats mass production. Don't change your unique sticks. Quote
Pobre Rico Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Here's what I think... Piece of melted down beer can stamped out in Taiwan and painted by kids chained to a work station... $3.99 Hand-carved by El Diablo with talent and undying love and eternal commitment to the staff owner... priceless! Extreme exaggeration involved in both descriptions! But, I'd be willing to pay extra bucks for the carved version. Give a choice. It won't take long to find out what folks prefer! Quote
uperdooper Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 give people the option to choose one or the other. Quote
writer Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 I agree with uperdooper, and wold add two words for the hand-carved version: premium pricing... Quote
Corp Of Discovery Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 These 2 things are not mutually exclusive. Wouldn't someone, if they wanted, be able to put one of the GC medallions on one of your staffs? That is what the medallions are for after all, to be a reminder of, and show others, where you have been or in this case what you do. I have a 'home made' staff myself. Nothing fancy, as I am not an artisian. But it does proudly sport both the GC one and one I picked up at Gettysburg NBF. Quote
