+welch
Chris, try using Google to search 'Geocaching'. Quote Link to comment
+Team DEMP
As it relates to Geocaching.com, competing would be another listing site. There's nothing that has the large numbers that gc.com has but there are a couple out there. An example is another listing site has 30 caches listed for a 30 mile radius of my zip code in Northern NJ. In contrast, gc.com has 730 listed, albeit with some small number of those being unavailable at the moment The rest of the sites fall into areas such as local groups, "portal" sites and personal sites. +Nappy10
As far as adding another tool to the toolbox goes, I like this one. The link you listed leads me to Geocaching on GPSgames.org. The site says they went online May 2004. Do they not know of Geocaching.com? Is there anything different that they offer that geocaching.com doesn't? Or, are they just trying to start competition to geocaching.com? I guess what I am getting at is...whats the point? Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
The only other currently active, competing website today is www.navicache.com. Quote Link to comment
+rusty_tlc
The only other currently active, competing website today is www.navicache.com. I wouldn't say they compete, at least not in these parts. They haven't listed a new cache in my area for a year. Most of the ones they do list are duplicates of GC.com listings. I never even bothered to sign up with them. Quote Link to comment
+The Geocache Hunter
As far as I am concerned there is only one website and this is it! Quote Link to comment

Or, are they just trying to start competition to geocaching.com? I guess what I am getting at is...whats the point? I couldn't imagine anyone that caches enough can avoid finding out about gc.com And it has this in the 'wiki' Web sites have emerged that list the locations of geocaches for others to hunt. Three of these sites are http://geocaching.gpsgames.org (the site that hosts this Geocaching Wiki), http://www.navicache.com, and http://www.geocaching.com. As for whats different? On http://geocaching.gpsgames.org, anyone can review a cache. Reviewers are expected to consider cache location, landowner permission, impact on environment, safety, suitability for children, and local standards, among other things. The review comes down to a simple yes/no decision on whether to approve a cache. and: Procedures Who? Anyone can review a cache submission. Someone close to the location of the cache is preferred. The best review is by someone who is familiar with the cache site. Which as I understand means you can list anything you can write up Geocaching is a game in which players hide objects that other players use GPS receivers to find. It's simple. Traditionally, the hidden object is a waterproof container with a log book and various inexpensive prizes. Finders are encouraged to take something, leave something, and sign the log. Over time, many forms of geocaching have emerged. Moving caches, virtual caches, hitchhikers, so-called locationless caches, even event caches, are popular. All are welcome here. This site went online in May, 2004, with only 21 caches listed. To find a cache near you, someone else first has to hide one and list it. If you can't find any near you, please consider hiding one yourself and listing it here. edit: emphasis added Edited July 9, 2004 by welch Quote Link to comment
+Old Joe Clark
I guess what I am getting at is...whats the point? I think welch covered it very well. Thank you welch. Not all alternative sites are "competing". It's just another tool, and a useful one. It is for me at least. I like and use this site daily. I use others too. OJC Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
The only truly competing sites that I'm aware of are Navicache.com and the new geocaching.gpsgames.org. There is also opencaching.com, which started off with a lot of interest, but seems to have died...or is moving forward at a snail stuck in molasses pace. There was also geocachingworldwide.com (or something like that), but it went under. I say competing sites, but there really is no competetion. Navicache has been around for a few years, yet it only has 29 caches listed in my state. Geocaching.com has close to 2,000. The new site, geocaching.gpsgames, doesn't even have 30 caches listed in the entire US. As Team DEMP mentioned, most of the other sites are portal sites, the site of local geocaching orgs and personal sites. These often contain tools and information to aid geocachers, but aren't "competing" sites. Quote Link to comment
+Team DEMP
GC.com is like eBay. Using eBay, you post your auction on the site that is most popular and will provide you with the best opportunity to sell your item. There are other auction sites out there such as Yahoo, etc but for maximum exposure, eBay is where folks list. When folks place a cache they want it listed where it will receive the most visitors/exposure. When you're looking for a cache, you want to go to a site where you have the best choice of finding something that is in your area and ability. GC.com meets those needs. Doesn't mean a better site won't come along, but without the content (listings) I don't think they have a chance in becoming more popular. Quote Link to comment

Is there anything different that they offer that geocaching.com doesn't? Or, are they just trying to start competition to geocaching.com? Some people want some independence of the game from any one given site. More to the point, though, is that Scout has a number of other GPS-related games that you might find interesting. Brian, as of June 1 there were 101 caches listed at Scout's site and some have been added this past month. I don't think they are all visible until you login. That may be why you only saw about 30. That's still not a "drop in the bucket" compared to the big picture, but there are some unique and very usable features there. Thanks. OJC Quote Link to comment

Glad to know that people are actually reading it and finding it useful. I'm planning a "Part 2" to the artile soon that will talk about connecting your Palm & GPS so that you can transfer waypoints etc..... Thanks for making my day. Hey clan, it's always nice to help promote cachers "Help & How To's" over most of the Big Box one's. They really don't understand that we need very specific stuff! As for being # 7 , I just went into my bookmarks and listed a bunch, to get him into searching! I can't wait to see Part 2. Your info was very helpful, to go Paperless. Though I still haven't totally relied on the PDA. I'm always hesitant to change! Keep up the good work! Have a better than good day! SF1 Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
This list is as comprehensive as I'm aware of. We would add geocachingworld wide but unlike Mopar I'm not familiar with the internet "the way it used to be" machine that he amazes me with on a link every now and then. +Team DEMP
RK: Are you asking about Internet Archive WayBack Machine? Enter a URL and see various versions of that site over time. Not everything will work on a site that has been archived, but sometimes it's fun to see how things used to be. For example, here's what the Microsoft site looked like back in October 1996 - http://web.archive.org/web/19961020014044/....microsoft.com/ Quote Link to comment
