+Spoo
I would love to be able to find a claimable Magnetic Station Disc. Does anyone know how I can find if there are any in my area without actually searching listings by 10 mile grids for hours on end? Thanks for any help. TUPPERHUNTER
Take a look down at the topic "Fing the Oldies". that should help some. Quote Link to comment

+Spoo
OK.....I am slow, dense and over 40......meaning I am not a computer literate..........I do not see how the above allows me to look for Magnetic discs. The only clue on a data sheet seems to be that the Marker Type is a 'DM' and that does not seem to be a searchable item. Any help or other suggestions? Quote Link to comment
+2oldfarts (the rockhounders)
Spoo, try doing a benchmark home page 'other search option' using the 'desination box' and use just the word 'magnetic' and the state you want to search. We tried it and got a few returns. Not very complete but a start. Good luck, John Quote Link to comment
+Black Dog Trackers
Spoo - I'd like to help if I can. The finding the oldies thing has numbered steps. From your message, I can't pick up where you stopped - I don't know where that is. The basic idea is to use the DSWIN program to arrange the data from a county's worth of data sheets and then sort it with a spreadsheet program. If you don't have a spreadsheet program, you could eyeball the list that DSWIN makes - it wouldn't be hard once DSWIN has done its work. There is no searchability function; just a big list of data fields for every PID in the county that you look through, either with or without the help of a spreadsheet program to sort it. For finding the magnetic disks, all you need DSWIN to get is PID and MONUMENTATION and pick out the DM ones as you noted. Quote Link to comment

But much to my dimay there is only one genuine disc in all of Maine (about 300 miles from me) and none at all in NH listed this way. Maybe that's all there is. In AZ there are only 6 w/2 logged as 'destroyed', UT only 2 w/1 logged 'not found' & NV only 5 & all not yet logged. But, in every state they are all very far away...so much so that we will need a vacation to go find them! There are still a lot of old regular BMs closer that we will keep finding. Hope you find an OLD one! Shirley~ Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
Type MAGNETIC in DESIGNATION. On the main page GC.com go to Benchmark page, select other options, type in the designation you want to find and go. it has some limitations Quote Link to comment
+Black Dog Trackers
Spoo - I saw you have benchmark finding activity in Cumberland and Oxford counties. So, I used those two in DSWIN and found this about the Disk Types: For Cumberland County (534 PIDs): Type Number of PIDs DB 158 DD 122 DH 1 DJ 8 DO 60 DR 27 DS 36 DT 1 DV 1 For Oxford County (315 PIDs): Type Number of PIDs DB 126 DD 66 DE 1 DH 1 DO 49 DR 6 DS 2 DV 2 DZ 4 From the Hippopotamus file, the Disk types (among all the other types of marks) are: DA Astro pier disk DB Bench mark disk DD Survey disk (other agency) DE Traverse station disk DG Gravity station disk DH Horizontal control disk DJ Tidal station disk DK Gravity reference mark disk DM Magnetic station disk DO Disk not specified (see description) DP Base line pier disk DQ Calibration base line disk DR Reference mark disk DS Triangulation station disk DT Topographic station disk DU Boundary marker DV Vertical control disk DW NOS hydrographic survey disk DZ Azimuth mark disk Quote Link to comment
+Spoo
BDT........ You have WAY TOO much time on your hands !!!!!!!!!! hahahaha. But you are correct. Most of my finds are in Oxford and Cumberland counties along with some in York county. Thanks for the info. It is helpful, as are the above suggestions and encouragement. I may have to drop the Magnetic hunts for the moment, they just seem so far away right now. Sunday, I am planning another mountain hike to find a Tri-station in Cumberland county. This will be my 8th mountain hike in 9 weeks. They take a whole day to get a single 'point', but I love every minute of them. This is only a 1976 monument but has not been reported since then, so the "hunt" is all the more fun. In the mean time......I wish you all luck in finding one of those RARE Magnetic discs. +Spoo
So What makes a magnetic disc different from the other discs A good and reasonable question TUPPER: It is just another DIFFERENT type of mark that I am interested in finding and would like to add to my collection. Nothing more. Quote Link to comment
TUPPERHUNTER
What exactly makes it different? Quote Link to comment
+happycycler
There is an example of a magnetic disk (at Univ. of Arkansas campus) atDusty Jacket's Webpage Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
The only seen difference is it has a Star of David or Solomons Seal as the figure on the mark. Quote Link to comment
