+shunra Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 (edited) On Friday, I lost my PDA as I rushed back from Go Mav's! to the playground, where my daughter was getting worried. Is there anyone living near that cache who could take a look if it is still there? I'd really appreciate it. It's just an old Palm, but it's all I've ever needed. Thanks so much! +k7-wave Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 I'll go over there in the morning to look around for it. I'll post the results of the search here. Quote

+k7-wave Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 Well, I arrived at the park at 6:30AM, no one else around. I went back and forth between the cache and playground three different ways and took a good look in the wooded area around the cache. I'm sorry to report that the missing PDA was not found. Quote

I'll survive. My 12 year old son has offered me the use of his Pocket-PC until I'll have a new PDA of my own, so I won't need to go cold turkey on paperless caching, which is as addictie as caching itself. Hmm... Thank you, k7-wave, and also Gizmo and jcar. I appreciate your generosity of your time! Daniel Quote

+evergreenhiker! Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Once you use his pocket pc....you'll never go back to a palm. I have to agree. Pocket PCs are a heck lot easier to use...especially for storing cache pages....less steps. Also the interface is like the computer...so you can pretty much jump right in and start using. Quote

How can anything be easier than Cachemate on a Palm ? You do a custom query, open it in GSAK, export straight to the Palm download manager, and hit the hotsync button... What's the process and software to do the same for a PocketPC ? My ancient Palm IIIxe is finally wearing out, the only thing keeping me on the Palm platform is Cachemate.... Quote

For me, I do pocket queries->gpx spinner->upload software for the pda I just use pocket IE for browsing. works great. When I had my palm...I went through a lot more steps, but didnt' know about Cachemate or Gsak. Quote
+travisl Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 For me, one step: drag GPX file to PocketPC. Presto - pages in GPXSonar. Quote
+shunra Posted July 7, 2004 Author Posted July 7, 2004 I open, merge, edit and filter my GPX files in GSAK. From GSAK, I upload any selection of caches I want to the GPS (I no longer need EasyGPS). I used to export that same selection to the Palm, and was very happy with the way I could read them in Cachemate. Now, I will export that same selection in HTML format onto a flash card, which I will then plug into the PPC. The result on the PPC looks slightly user-friendlier than Cachemate, but I haven't tried it out in practice yet. Also, I'm a bit concerned about battery life. The Palm was lost with replaceable rechargeable batteries. This PPC has a rechargeable battery like a laptop computer, and must be physically plugged in to recharge. I hope it won't run out of juice during the campout... Oh, and I have no experience whatsoever with Spinner and GPSonar, but from the software forums I am impressed that GSAK has superceded those programs. Quote

Oh, and I have no experience whatsoever with Spinner and GPSonar, but from the software forums I am impressed that GSAK has superceded those programs. GSAK hasn't superceded Sonar. One is the handle; The other is the blade. My system consists of GSAK -> gpx -> PPC Sonar: read pages, log notes, export pushpins to Pocket Streets, export notes back to GSAK Pocket Streets: Now how do I get to that park? +TotemLake Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 I've taken my Palm M125 on camping trips. I find that if you're prudent, the rechargeable battery should last you through the weekend. Mine lasted easily 4 days and 3 nights with power to spare by the time I got home. Quote

Blindleader - thanks for the correction. So GSAK supercedes Spinner, and GPXSonar would be the PPC-equivalent of what Cachemate is for the Palm? Curm, very kind of you to offer, I appreciate it. You might bring the thread back on-topic. Did you know your recommendation was the direct trigger for my purchase of Cachemate? Quote

+TotemLake Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 (edited) Well yes, but that's a Palm. I know how economic THEIR battery use is.But alas, I no longer have my Palm. Wasn't trying to compare apples to oranges as the M125 is the same as the PPC you mentioned and you did mention you used replaceable batteries on your Palm. The only reason the PPC would have a higher battery discharge is they typically have a faster processor and more memory. I figure a 3 day 2 night stay shouldn't be that big of a drain if you set the auto-off timer to be about 2 minutes. Edited July 7, 2004 by TotemLake Quote

+The Jester Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 I just picked up a Palm IIIxe at Frye's (in Renton) for around 50 dollars. It a refurbished unit, but works great FWIW. With 8 megs it holds a lot more then the pictured palm. Quote

+Wienerdog Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 Seriously.... I can't add much tech. talk here. Just have to sy that Mr WD and I each have a Hp iPAC PPC. Wonderful! We use GPX Spinner and MS Street and Trips for maps and pushpins. Haven't tried Sonar yet, but watched blindleader use it. We both love these little units! Quote

+KG7JE Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 Oh man! I'd be lost without my PPC! Even though it's been called "antiquated" by folks at HP (3670). I'm afraid to put it down for GPS Tuner to average the readings for fear I'd walk off and leave it. As for leaving things -- True story: I'd just placed 'Wits End' and was home talking to Wanita (wife) and Mom. Phone rings. Wanita looks at the caller ID and gets this weird puzzled look. Mom, "Well who's calling?" Wanita, looking at me, "Him!" Me, "Well, answer the phone!!!!!!" as I frantically grab all belt locations, six empty pockets, check the cufs in the pant legs and a few other locations we'll leave to your imagination. Turns out a couple of ladies walking their dog had found the phone. They called Sprint and were told that "that's a company phone" and "why not leave a message on their cell phone!" -- hmm, not sure how I was going to get that one. Anyway, they started through the phone book to see if they recognized anybody and found an entry for "Home". Thus, the phone call to home. --KG7JE (checking that cell phone is still attached to belt) PS. GPX directly to sync area. Then to IPAQ. Use GPX Sonar to generate the .LOC files for GPS Tuner. Don't need GSAK nor Mapopolis nor M/S Streets. Been thinking that 1994 Thomas Brothers may be a bit old. Quote

btechman2002 Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 Okay, since we are talking about software... What programs do you recommend for me to use for a Tungsten E (Palm 5.2.1)? Quote
CurmudgeonlyGal Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 (edited) I just use Cachemate on my T2. I tried that spinning and plucking thing, but I neither have the patience for it to process, nor the need to have my 'cache pages' look exactly like they do on the website. In fact, since I have been using GSAK to upload the cache D/T, type and container size into my 'notes' section in my GPS, I rarely use the PDA anymore. (Some myystery, and certain multi-caches excluded.) -=- michelle Edited July 15, 2004 by CurmudgeonlyGal Quote
