I sent my magellan sportrack pro in for repairing of the cracking case. low and behold they sent me a so called new one, After a month the so called new one is starting to get cracks in the case. I use mine for work and every time i send it in i lose money. I am ticked off.

Send it in for a new one, sell it on ebay, buy a better GPS. If you are losing momey each time you send it in, then economics dictates a different model

I'd have a second one for a backup. I hate losing money if I don't have too.

Buy a Garmin and make your current unit a back up. I wouldn't be suprised that once you go with Garmin as your primary unit, you won't need to use your back up due to failures...

Yeah and you'll always have the Magellen for when there is tree cover, or a building nearby, or an airplane flew between you and the sattelite. :)

I have a meridian and love it. I honestly don't think people should switch from one to another. I can pick up a sportrak or any mag and instantly know how it works. I pick up a garmin and I'm lost. I think it's best to stick with what you started with.

That's the truth. I hate the eTrex menu system in my Rino. However if someone started with an eTrex, I doubt they would like anything else.

Bad advice, why buy a Garmin to back up a Magellan, then you would have to buy new software for the Garmin, and you will end up using the Garmin to back up the Magellan once you realize that the Garmin units donn't measur up it the software dept to Magellan, (I have used both brands) Once you ear how to use one Magellan you can use any of them, You can not say this about Garmin.

Buy the way, Having been a GPS retailer for many years going back to the first consumer GPS, the Magellan trail blazer. both Garmin and Magellan GPSr can end up in for repairs, think that owning a Garmin will keep you from ever having to get it repaired leading yourself down the road of disapointment.

I like Garmin my first GPS was a Garmin (the magellan model in that price range didn't support UTM).

I'd recomend you to buy a backup of the same unit you have or at least one that was compatible with the same cords and software.

Which Magellan was it that did not support UTM?

Garmin or Magellan who cares? Both have good and bad points. If I had the same problems as the original poster I would never buy a Magellan again. After having the same problem over and over and you stick with the same manufacture then you deserve to receive defective items. The same goes for Garmin users if they have repeating problems.

Of the 2 GPSrs I have I have only had one problem with the newest one and just before I returned it there was a firmware patch to fix it. Which brand? The better of the two in my opinion, but I prefer to stay out of the brand wars.

When I had Vista I had to send it twice before they fixed ClickStick problem. I guess first time they thought it was fine, and simply returned it to me.

I bought an ST Map - it got cracks & Magellan repaired it twice & then replaced it with a ST Pro, which also got cracks, unfortunately. I never dropped it or anything, but did keep it in my car, so maybe it's a heat issue. They finally offered to give me my money back or replace it with a Meridian. I took the Meridian, of course and spent a little more money with them to upgrade it to a Platinum, with the temp., barometer and 3-axis compass. I bought a 64 Meg SD card and I love the coverage I now have! Keep with it - Magellan has the best customer service and I have dealt with a lot. They will make it right and you'll probably end up with a lot of extra stuff for your unit, too!

I don't remember the model but the garmin I bought was a 38. This was at least 10 years ago when consumer GPS's were still relatively new.

Every Magellan I have come accross going back to the 300 and 310 supported UTMs and Lat Lons. Most of first Magellans were marketed to the Marine industry in which case Lat Lons are the choice rather than UTMs.

I'm not slamming Magellan for not supporting UTM back then. Boats were the thing using most of the GPS's. Handheld units were just coming down in price when I bought mine. I was just saying that UTM was the reason I bought my first Garmin and I will likely stick with Garmin since I've been happy with them.

Why is it that the Magellan supporters are always a lot more defensive about their brand of GPS?
