SnipeHunterBot
What is the best software to buy to get hiking trails? I have been using my basemaps on my rhino 120 and they just aren't helping too well. I have been looking at the mapsource cds but don't know what ones to get. How well do they work on the gps? any feedback is appreciated. Better yet, anyone wanting to let a fellow geocacher borrow a copy of the cd is even more appreciated. Quote Link to comment
Keystone
Moving this to the GPS Units and Software forum, where this discussion is welcome to continue, provided that it doesn't involve any violations of software licenses. Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
National geographic topo has a measn to share trails via their website. That may or may not make it 'the best' but it's as start. Quote Link to comment

If you are looking to load a map into the GPS your only option is Garmin. National geographic Trail Smart maps have trails marked on them, but they are limited to Nat. Parks. their topo maps are great for topography but lack most trail information unless you download the from their website. Quote Link to comment
CenTexDodger
I use Mapsource Topo USA and it shows some hiking trails. it may not show all, or the ones you want, but it works for me. Quote Link to comment
CenTexDodger
Bot, If you want to PM me your E-mail address and some coords (assuming it is in the US), I can send you a screen shot. Or if you contact Garmin Cartography, they can do the same thing. That way you can see if it does what you need! Quote Link to comment
Wild T2
This may not be of much help, but the Minnesota DNR has a free program where you can upload and download map data to several Garmin GPS units. The Rhino 120 is not on the list that they say work, but at least it is not on the list that they say do not work. The biggest hurdle will be finding the trail data in the right format (ESRI Shapefile), as it may not exist. The shapefile will not appear as a background map in the Garmin. It loads into the GPS as a track log. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/a.../DNRGarmin.html Try mining for shapefile data at the geography network. http://www.geographynetwork.com Also some links to some State data clearinghouses. http://www.nsgic.org/related_sites/index.cfm Complicated and not very user friendly, but its free.
