W6RLF
A friend has gotten me interested into geocaching. I'm considering two units: The Magellan Sportrak Map, and the Magellan Meridian Gold. While I'm not looking to spend more than I have to, the price difference is not really an issue. (I'm aware that I have to add the price of memory to the Meridian if I want to download anything.) I've read all about the specific differences; I'd be very grateful for some opinions as which unit I should go for, perhaps some feedback on aspects that don't come through simply reading the specs. I would use it for hiking, geocaching, and some general use. Thanks very much, Paul Quote Link to comment
Tahoe Skier5000
Go for the Gold! You can perhaps bypass a few quality issues by chosing accordingly. Quote Link to comment
+Rogue_monkey
if money is not a concern get the merigold Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I hear the Sportraks have a problem with the case cracking around the screw holes after a while. Quote Link to comment
+JohnnyVegas
I use both the Meridian gold and the sport trak map. If you are only going to buy one, buy the gold. It is a little larger but you can expand the memory buy using a larger chip. You will find your best price on a chip at Costco. Quote Link to comment
W6RLF
Thanks to all for the responses. Forgive one more question, this regarding the size of memory to purchase: I vaguely recall reading somewhere that there is no point in getting more than a 32 MB memory, because that was the most that could be loaded at one time (I may really be mis-stating that.) In any case, does this ring a bell at all? Thanks again, Paul Quote Link to comment
+The Commissar!
Wrong! You can load many different regions and change back and forth so get as much as you want to afford. I have a Plat w/128 card and wish I had more. I have most of the east coast states from florida to Va loaded on my card with some to the west too...centered on SC, my home area... +Will+Bill
I thought that in the manual for my regular Meridian, it said 64 max. eBay is by the cheapest way to go for cards, by the way. Quote Link to comment
+The Commissar!
Check the FAQ in the yahoo group dedicated to meridians of all varieties. I don't have the address but you can search. I think that constraint was removed with firmware upgrades as well as the limit on size of uploaded regions. Those guys are "experts". Quote Link to comment
+Team Trout
I have a Merigreen basic model and use a 256MB SD card it. Works fine. I can load a ton of maps on it and then just choose whichever one I need at the time. This is the one capablity that I really miss on my shiney new 60cs. Quote Link to comment
