I absolutely love mine. I ordered it when I just started Geocaching in March, just arrived two eeks ago. I am still learning how it works but so far I totally like it. I only paid $400 for mine .. guess I ordered it before they were released and got a great rate.

There are lots of threads on the 60C(S) in the GPS Units and Software forum that contain hints and other comments about the units. You might find some interesting tidbits by searching in that forum or scanning the thread titles for 60C(S).

Great unit though and I'm considering it or a 76CS as my next purchase. Or, I might wait one more year and see if anything else comes out.

Err, what external antenna do you use with yours?

Sorry, didn't mean truly "external" antenna. I haven't needed any additional antennas. Just meant the standard antenna that it comes with is not enclosed completely within the case like the eTrex is. Still makes a considerable difference.

Just took mine out for my first ever geocaching expedition around Will Rodgers State Park in CA.

It worked perfectly. Took me to within 15 feet, and then the electronic compass game me enough info to home in on the location of all 3 caches I tried to find!

No one should ever regret buying this model GPSr!

Can I do without a PDA when using the 60CS? Is there enough space on the Geocaching screens to put all the info you need to find the caches?

I think a 60c(s) and a web-enabled cell phone does the trick nicely - and for a lot more than just geocaching. The 60c(s) by itself doesn't hold enough info if you need hints or logs to find a cache.

I have a question for you lucky people that own one. Can I do without a PDA when using the 60CS? Is there enough space on the Geocaching screens to put all the info you need to find the caches? If it does have, maybe I can talk the better half to let me buy a 60CS instead of getting a PDA.

I use a PDA and a 60cs to cache. The 60cs only holds the waypoint and name of the cache so a PDA and cachemate comes in very handy!

You can byu a low low end PDA (even a used on ebay) that will work just fine for caching though. Perhaps you can get the 60cs and a cheapo PDA and be just fine!

I use GSAK to put more info in my CS. When I push find, I scroll down through the GC#'s and pick a cache. Push Enter on the one I want and up comes the name, what type of cache it is, what size container, and the difficulty/terrain. For example, on my Columbia Cache, it would say:

  • COLUMBIA CACHE T R 1.5/2

Translated, that's Columbia Cache, Traditional, Regular size, 1.5 Diff, 2 Terrain

My nearby micro would say:

  • WHERE'S GEORGE COLUMBIA T M 3/1.5

The M is for Micro. If it were a vert, it would be V ?, the ? being for unknown size.

You get the idea. :) Oh, but I still use a PDA with GPXSonar.

I've been using a Vista for 2 1/2 years. I was thinking about upgrading to a 60CS which is a Vista with additional memory, color screen and auto-navigation.

However, my old Sharp organizer broke and I needed a new one. So I opted for a Pocket PC (PPC) to use for business. You know, appointments, contacts, to do lists as well as storing Word and Excel files, photo files, games, etc. Mine also came with Outlook so I can sync to my company's Outlook on my office PC.

Then added a autonavigation program to the PPC with voice instructions on where to turn etc. Far superior I believe then the 60CS. So I wind up using the PPC for navigating, and also going paperless for caching. All the caches and stored with the hints and everything else in my PPC. I use it to get to the trail head then my Vista on the trail with Topo maps. (the PPC also can use Topo but I haven't used it too much).

Cost wise you can probably get a Vista and a decent color PPC for about the same as a 60CS - I think a better buy. Especially because of the navigation program and paperless caching plus you can tell your wife you're using it for business :)
