Magellan Meridian And Aprs

Recommended Posts

Looking into planning for a mobile unit. It seems that the storm spotters are increasingly using APRS to augment their reporting. They are using Kenwood's and Garmin V's. I have a Magellan Meridian and was wondering if this unit would feed to an APRS configured mobile unit. Anyone have any experience with this?

Its my understanding that all you need is the serial cable to send NMEA output. Just set the Meridian to this output in the menu. If you want to see this output, you can use a program like VisualGPS, which has a NMEA Command Monnitor. My Meridian's NMEA output works well on this program and Streets and Trips, and should work well with APRS.

Freeware: VisualGPS

Anyone use APRS while caching? Would it be a good way for my wife to keep track of me from home while I am out on one of my caching trips (not a bad thing.)?
