Ammo Cans

I had been looking on ebay and in every larger town I went to for ammo cans.

I was not having any luck.

 

I live in a very small town and have never seen any ammo cans in the stores around here.

 

Tonight I was looking for a something else I could use for a cache and guess what I found in our local farm supply store, ammo cans!

 

I could not belive it. The had 6 there and I got two of them tonight.

 

I will be going back to get a couple more this weekend. I should have just gotten them all tonight, but I did not want to look like

 

Anyway I'm heading out to place my first cache tonight.

I have been looking for a spot for a couple weeks. I have a spot picked out and a cache loaded and ready to go.

 

Geocaching is just to much fun.

Odd. There are three surplus places near me that sell them.

Here they range from $10.00 to $30.00 depending on size.

call a gun shop, the one we found had almost one hundred in the back room and they only wanted $5.00 each.

Yep, I placed the cache and did not even think of painting over the military markings.

 

I will go back ASAP and do that.

I've found that one of the big "Official Geocache" stickers is just the right size for covering up the military markings.....

I am fortunate to have a large army navy surplus store on my drive to work. $3.99 for ammocans, $.99 for decon boxes.

 

The store has the pleasant smell of 50 year old canvas and leather. Racks upon racks of ammocans and every other size and shape of military cans, cases, and containers. Plenty of good geoswag can be found there also.

The best thing about my job is I get to use the ammunition in the cans before I turn them into caches. (I am in the Army ) Actually it can be a real pain to get them because all ammunition residue (brass, boxes, crates, etc) must be turned in and accounted for. Its not impossible, but I do get my cans for free.

FYI for newbies or anyone passing through the Springfield, Missouri area, there is a store here called Surplus City (or Army Surplus) that you can purchase ammo cans for $4.99. Lots of other geoswag too.

It's located on West Hwy 60 (or Sunshine St.)

The last batch of cans I bought were $1 each at a gun show. Most of the surplus stores I've been to want way too much for them ($5-10), so I stock up when I go to a show. The most I've paid at a show is $2.50 each.

I am lucky enough to have a friend in the military. He gives ammo cans away to anyone that needs them.

I have an Army Surplus store in Bentonville,AR that sells the small ammo cans for $3.00 and the large ones for $5.00 each. They stock hundreds of them. If anyone needs some just email me and I can pick some up and send them.

That's strange. My current source for ammo cans at the low-low-low price of $0 gets them straight from a military res down south and the military markings are already covered with a flat black aerosol-based paint.
