+raouljan
Does anyone know if a plastic replacement for the standard ammo box used in geocaching? TIA! Quote Link to comment
+joefrog
A local cacher uses them, and they've held up quite well. They're in the hunting section of your local sporting goods store (academy sports, around me), usually called a "dry box". Looks kinda like a tackle box for fishing. Quote Link to comment
+carleenp
All of the plastic dry boxes I have seen looked like they would work well, but were also quite expensive. Quote Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
I used a plastic "ammo can" (dry box), purchased in the Sporting Goods store, for my very first cache placement. When I made my first maintenance check, I discovered that a visitor could not figure out how to open the container, so they just tore the cover off, ruining the hinges. When selecting a container, be sure to keep in mind the stupidity factor / lowest common denominator of geocachers who will find your cache. Too many people cannot even replace a lid correctly on a tupperware style container in order to keep it watertight. Quote Link to comment

+The Cheeseheads
I have a dry box for one of my caches which has stood up for almost two years without damage or letting in water. It is a drybox I picked up at Bass Pro. Quote Link to comment
Colonel Mustard
Just did a couple of caches with plastic ammo boxes. Didn't seem too shabby. Much quieter than the steel cans, if you need to be stealthy. Quote Link to comment
+Criminal
I read the question differently. Are you asking about the plastic commercial version of the ammo can, or the military plastic ammo can? I have used these: but find that they are not as watertight as the steel ones. Quote Link to comment
+Cache Viking
I sure hope you repaint them there boxes. Quote Link to comment
+bigredmed
We have access to the military plastic ammo cans. They are bigger and probably harder to hide. They are also considerably more expensive. I have always stuck with the metal ones. Quote Link to comment
+Bubba Cache
I am the cacher Joefrog is talking of. I purchased a plastic "ammo can" at Academy Sports (May be a southern chain). I used one for my first cache over a year and a half ago and it has held up extremely well. Never leaked. I have used two more since then. They were betwen $5 and $6 dollars. Worth the extra money for the durability. Took spray paint VERY well too! Quote Link to comment

Do you know of any online sources? Quote Link to comment

I haven't done much looking, but the cheapest I've seen the dry boxes is around $10. Even Cheaper Than Dirt sells them for about that price (and higher). I'll take the 50-cal ammo can for $4 a pop from them myself. Quote Link to comment
+wolf452
Criminal, I remember the first time I found one of those. The hider made no effort to paint over the labels and the tree it was behind stood no chance of concealing it. I was quite surprised. Quote Link to comment

+Prime Suspect
What's worng with traditional ammo boxes? We'll eventually run out of them, as the U.S. military is phasing them out. I understand Canada will still use them, but that's only a small fraction of what the U.S. uses. Maybe if we could get Canada to attack someone, it would up production. Hey Canada! Luxembourg said you're all a bunch of wusses! Quote Link to comment

What I think I am looking for is a box that looks, tastes, smells and acts like the good 'ol 7.62 ammo can, but made out of plastic. Needs to be as water-tight as the steel version. Thanks for all the responses. Quote Link to comment

Thanks for all the responses. OK, I have seen those too. They are usually in the hunting department of your local outdoor store. I've seen them in GI Joes and Duffle Bag. Usually around $10, so a bit higher than I would like to pay. Quote Link to comment

+joefrog
Whoa!! $55 for a 9x7x6 box!? That's an OTTER box, a really heavy-duty box for boating, divers, etc., not what I was talking about. Keeps something dry for a time and submersible if need be. Not suited for an underwarer cache, but darn handy on a boat. Quote Link to comment
MickUpi
My latest cache uses a "divers box". It has a good rubber gasket on the edges, measures 10 x 8 x 4 inches. The best part is I got it for a dollar at a yard sale. Mick Quote Link to comment
+rusty_tlc
I saw a plastic one at the local sporting goods store yesterday for $19.98 (not $20 mind you). I was looking at it when the salesman came over and mentioned that I could get the real thing for $8 at the surplus store <wink, wink, nod, nod>, well little does he know they are actually $7.98, I just bought one last week.
