76cs Gps Is Shipping...

Recommended Posts

As the old "pre-shipping" thread on the 76CS was getting a little "long-in-the-tooth" I am starting a new thread on the 76CS now that the 1st units are shipping....

----------------

I spoke with TVNav today and my 76CS is part of their original shipment and ships today!

I only sprung for 2nd day air, so I should have it by Wed.

IT'S HERE ! :D:):):):):):):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:ph34r:

My 76 CS arrived today via Brown...

Way to go TVNav.com !!!! :D

If you haven't dealt with Darell and Glenda at TVNav, you're missing out as all they do is GPS and they know it well. Great Customer Service, great prices, fast delivery, quick to receive new models.

Mark from MN

P.S. the 76CS has a Geocache feature... not sure if it's the same as the 60CS, because I've had it out of the box all of an hour now (while watching the Wolves take game 7!), but that's one surprise!

Can you tell I am happy to Finally get my new 76CS and end my GPS-less streak!

May 20, 2004 - 7:10 am - On FedEx vehicle for delivery.

Hurry up FedEx!!! I have been jumping up to look out the window everytime I hear a vehicle go by. I have my new NiMH batteries all charged up and ready to drop in as soon as it gets here. Then its off to a cache that I have been waiting THREE MONTHS to log.

Glad to hear they put that geocache feature in there... not sure how useful it will turn out to be but you can never have too many bells and whistles :)

Got mine this morning from GPS City. From looking at manual it not only has the geocache screens of the 60C models but also has the same games. Put in batteries and took it outside in an open field to initialize, however, and got absolutely NO satellite signals with a clear horizon to horizon view. My old Vista in same spot picks up 8 signals. Checked menus-GPS is on, turned on WAAS and still doesn't pick up a single satellite. NOT a good start-guess it goes back to GPS city or Garmin. Like the form factor-the buttons above the screen are very easy to use with your thumb when using one-handed and the screen is very readable-now if I only had a working antenna it would be great !

Sorry Mega Volt! I obviously got the names mixed up.

So, Us 5 Camp, and anyone else who has one, what's the geocaching feature like on the 76cs?

It sounds like it is the same as on the 60cs from what Animas saw in the manual. Any first hand account from a user with a functioning 76cs?

Thanks!

Its working now. I let it sit for almost 15 minutes and it still did not pick up anything. What I did to get it started was hit "Menu" on the sat page and select "New location" That unlocked the system and now it picks up the same 8 sats that my Vista does in the same spot. Good tip for anyone having the same problem-your unit is NOT defective. Looking forward to playing with it this weekend ! The Geocache mode is initiated by using find, select geocache icon, hitting enter, selecting a geocache you loaded, press enter which brings up the info page, then select GO-TO and hit enter. Then the compass page changes to geocache navigation and displays any added data about the geocache in a comment field. Looks identical to the geocache mode I saw in a 60C brochure but I don't own a 60C to confirm its exactly the same.

Got my 76CS in this afternoon... what a wonderful unit!!! Looks to be just like the 60CS to me too except for memory of course. Does the 60CS have the serial port too?

Anyone upload software version 3.30 to a 76CS unit yet? I was going to but when I turned the GPS on Windows XP wanted to do a software install. Not sure if it was looking for USB drivers or not??? I do have the Mapsource Trip & Waypoint Manager loaded and I thought that is what loaded the USB drivers. Any thoughts?

The 60C(S) both have the serial port. It's the same 4-pin round connector used on the GPS V and the GPSMAP 76S (among other Garmin units)

If you've installed "Trip and Waypoint Manager", you should be good to go. Did you restart the system after installing "Trip and Waypoint Manager" and before you plugged in the GPS?

Good point... thought that would work... tried restarting but I still get the "Found New Hardware Wizard" popping up when I turn the unit on. So, I put the Trip & Waypoint CD back in and the Hardware Wizard found it and did its little install. Works now and version 3.30 looks to be operating great.

At this point I would be willing to bet that the hardware and software of the 60c/s and 76c/s are exactly the same except for the size of storage memory.

I think you are mostly correct. I bet the hardware is the same and the firmware only has minor differences. If you've ever seen the post showing a picture of the guts of a 76S and then look at a 60 series, you'll see they are nearly the same size. 76 series encases the antenna entirely and the 60 series has the Rhino-like antenna sticking out of it's case. This minute amount of extra volume is why the 76 floats and the 60 sinks.

Love this 76CS unit ! Loaded up ALL the topo data for CA State and National parks off Mapsource 24K Natl Parks West to the unit last night (270 something maps and 90 MB worth) Unit took it all without a whimper and I still have memory left over to throw in a few routes etc. Download time for all that data was only about 6/7 minutes via USB port. Now I won't have to keep loading and unloading topo data each time I go to a different park. Antenna works better under tree cover than my old Vista did. WOW !

:D Just got my 76CS!!!!!!!

No issues with picking up satellites.

Is it me or is it faster than the 76S? Drawing is much faster.

Love the new method for typing via keymap vs the up and down scrolling.

Good job Garmin, gpsnow.com, and FedEx.

Okay one suggestion to improve the keymap is for it to only show valid letters when searching. For example, if one is looking for a city and lets say there are only two cities, starting with the letter 'd' dogville and dodgeville. After selecting 'd' the only choice would be 'o'. After selecting 'o', there would be 2 choices 'd' and 'g'. Using the rocker key, it would skip over not possible letters.

If you have not blown away the tracks the shipped with the unit it is very interesting. Assuming it is not a flash image, which it could easily be, it might have been on during testing. Esp when the unit was actually moving (see log #34 below).

Brown just dropped mine off. Got it on and it got satellites, no problem. I think I downloaded the new firmware into it (don't know how to check it), and I might have downloaded the Idaho Panhandle from Mapsource. When I zoom in, I've got things that look like a topo map - without much detail.

IMy last Garmin was a II+, so I have a pretty steep learning hill to climb with this one. I might be asking a BUNCH of dumb questions, so please bear with me. like the ergonomics, button placement is excellent for me. It's really, really fast compared to the old II+ - the difference is like night and day.

thanks for all your help in picking this one...Rich

I think I downloaded some Mapsource Topo maps into the GPS, but I'm not sure if I'm seeing them on the GPS. Should the maps on the GPS look like the maps I see on my PC? Mine don't. When I saved them to the GPS it looked like it was doing something and said they were transferred. I found this in an old 60cs post

From the map page hit the "MENU" button and select "Setup Map"

Move to the fourth of the five icons (the "i" with the circle around it) and hit "MENU"

This will give you a list of options something like:

Show All

Show None

Hide Basemap

Restore Defaults

Restore All Map Defaults

Show US City Select

Show US Topo

but on my 76 when I do the above I never see "show US Topo" as an option. Anyone know how to make the maps appear on the GPS?

thanks...

Here a page of someone who took a GPS-V apart and attempted some modifications. It's nicely detailed with excellent photos.

http://www.elsinga.net/index.html?page=gps5faq

Scroll down and click on "What is inside the GPS V case?"

I'm still having lots of trouble with Mapsource on the 76CS. I believe the maps are downloaded - this am I put 43 of the Topo maps on it, most of Idaho. When I go the GPS I and select "Maps" I only see one - a map located somewhere in the middle of the long list I believe I moved to the GPS. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

thanks...

Have you tried turning off all the mapsets except the topo ones? You do this by getting to the map menu and then going to the menu bar above and selecting the mapsets you want on or off as a set rather then selecting them individually by section below.

US 5 Camp - Thanks a LOT! I'm really technology challenged, and this new GPS is testing my limits. I fooled around with map settings and seemed to get the topo maps working. At least it looks drastically different when I turn on them vs. having them off.

Thanks again!

The zoom scale on the bottom of the screen should say "Mapsource" under if if you are viewing any of the Mapsource products.

You can also, from the map page, hit 'menu', 'setup map' and use the center pad to navigate over to the mapsource page to see what maps you have loaded as well as which you have turned on.
