slunk
I bought a Magellan Sportrak Pro today and have been checking out Mapopolis and a few maps on my Visor. My wife and I are going to Kauai next month for our honeymoon, and I decided to download the demo Kauai map. The only thing I see on the map is the island outline. Are some of their maps just like this? The other few demo maps I have downloaded show streets and all. Quote Link to comment
JeepCachr
Must be they don't have street level detail for that island. All the demo maps I d/l'd before I registered it were as detailed as the registered maps. Quote Link to comment
slunk
That's been my experience, too. I just find it weird to offer such a map with the Platinum + GPS capabilities for a price of $12.95, when there is nothing there. I thought maybe it was a problem on my end or something. If anyone else wants to give it a try, they are available here under "Download Maps...Palm 3 or 4...Hawaii...Kauai." Edited May 17, 2004 by slunk Quote Link to comment
NightPilot
If your honeymoon will be close to the normal length, then you don't need to buy the map. You can download maps as trials, and they're good for almost 2 weeks. The Navigator app is free. If you only need a map for a few days, and won't need to use it again, just get the demo. I agree, but that's not the point. The map, demo or not demo, appears to be somewhat useless. Quote Link to comment
TeamMoehrke
I checked the Platinum level maps (I bought the software and have access to all the maps) and agree, the Kauai County map is empty. The Honolulu County map is fine, though, so it doesn't affect the entire state. I dropped a note to the Contact e-mail at Mapopolis. It'll be interesting to see what they have to say. +NightPilot
Almost all mapping programs use the same data, from Mapteq. If Mapteq doesn't supply any road data for that island, then there isn't much Mapopolis can do. I'd be willing to bet you won't find another program with more detailed data. If it's useless, then it's useless. Quote Link to comment
slunk
I completely agree and understand. But, to offer a $13 version of nothing seems rather silly. Quote Link to comment
Capt. Jack & 1st Mate
We bought the Kauai map just before going this spring and found it to be very detailed. Didn't use it much as we had the map on our GPSV, but it was still nice to have along. P.S. This was for the PPC, but I assume it would be the same for the Palm. Edited May 18, 2004 by Capt. +slunk
Weird. I noticed the file size for the Palm 5 Kauai map is a lot larger (~15x). Maybe they just don't support Kauai on the Palm 3 or 4. Edited May 18, 2004 by slunk Quote Link to comment
TeamMoehrke
Here's the response I got from Mapopolis: The Hawian Islandes were only recently completely surveyed by NavTeq, our data provider, and the maps are only updated in the most current release. You'd need to upgrade to the ND release to get these maps. However, if you only need the Kauai map, you can purchase the new map individually and it is fully compatible with your existings maps and viewer. So I downloaded the demo map (the ND version, as I've purchased the NC versions) and it is just as detailed as described. The demo lasts for nine days... Quote Link to comment
slunk
Thanks TeamMoehrke. I'll give it a try. Quote Link to comment
