+wingryder
This is a newbe question. I have a gps full of waypoints with names like GC1234. How can I make the gps screen read the real cache names. Even just the first four letters would be enough. Those GC names are pretty worthless to me. wingryder Quote Link to comment

If you _really_ want to do it, you can use one of the GPS shareware utilities -- I like GPS Utility -- to move the data to a Excel file, and swap columns around. Save it as a .dbf file; open it with GPS Utility; and send it back to your GPS. Most of us just learn to live with the GCxxxx names. Quote Link to comment

You're quickly going to start running into duplicate names. Most GPSs won't allow duplicates. Within a 20 mile radius of where I live, there are: 2 caches starting with "ANOTHER" 2 caches starting with "BEYOND" 2 caches starting with "BOB " 3 caches starting with "CACHE" 2 caches starting with "CHRISTMAS 2 caches starting with "CIGARS" 2 caches starting with "CONNEMARA" 7 caches starting with "FISH" 2 caches starting with "FLYING" 2 caches starting with "FOOT" 2 caches starting with "FRIEND" 2 caches starting with "GEORGE" 2 caches starting with "GREY" 4 caches starting with "JOE " 2 caches starting with "LEGACY" 2 caches starting with "NORTH" 2 caches starting with "ONE " 2 caches starting with "POINT" 2 caches starting with "SPRING" 2 caches starting with "TEXAS" 22 caches starting with "THE " (!) 2 caches starting with "WHO " Well, you get the idea. The whole point of the system generated waypoint names is that they're unique. Quote Link to comment
+Team StitchesOnQuilts
I don't know what kind of GPS you have, so I'm not sure if this is a reasonable answer. We have a SporTrak Pro, and when we view a waypoint, it has the name at the bottom. Also, if we use the "go to" feature, we can scroll quickly through the GC names and see a partial name at the bottom. If you have an eTrex, I don't know if you have a similar screen, I'm afraid. +LoneHowler
With my Rino I can rename locations I havent had any luck downloading to it yet so I've been entering them manualy More to see, More to do Quote Link to comment
+CoronaKid
With my Legend, I always rename the waypoint as soon as I've downloaded it from EasyGPS. Check to see if your GPSr can edit the name. Like you, I found the GC listings annoying and I like seeing the name of the cache on the mapping page. It feels more like a treasure hunt. As for the excel suggestion, no thanks. That sounds like way too much hassle. --CoronaKid Quote Link to comment
Dale_Lynn
CoronaKid... Why not edit waypoint numbers/names while in EasyGPS, keyboard is a lot less tedious than doing it in GPSr.. I change them to numeral numbers 1-100. That way I do not have a 5 or more character GPS Waypoint junking up my screen. I also change the ICON defualt to a small city Icon. This way it again does not junk up my screen, and is more accurate when I get closer to the cache. Quote Link to comment
+Freelens&Mosie
....is what I use. But you need a serial cable. I bought one for under $30 and it has been well worth it. I never use the little walking guy to find caches. I always use the compass with distance readout. When close I change use the Lat/Lon. to zero in. A day without sunshine is like ...night. +CoronaKid
Dale Lynn - Thanks for smacking me upside my head! I can't believe I was doing it the hard way! Well, I've only been at this for a month so I don't feel too bad. LOL...caching just got even easier. I'm not sure that's a good thing! --CoronaKid Quote Link to comment

Try this link: http://www.gpsu.co.uk/ One of its advantages is that it supports a variety of file formats for input and output. You can also geo-reference your own scanned map to your own waypoints. I've had good luck with it. Quote Link to comment
