Is it me or are most of us in the IT industry?

I have a theory that at least 1/2 of cachers in the UK, if not more, have some link to the IT industry, i have been looking at some of the bio's of the people who cache in my area and most of them are something IT, i suppose living in Reading(Microsoft and HP to name a few) might have something to with it. Or is it just a case of not being able to resist gadgets?

There seem to be a lot of ex-military involved in geocaching - perhaps because they are au fait with navigation techniques and like the outdoors? I've tried to work out why geocaching appeals to some and not at all to others. I think that if you enjoy puzzles, and get a thrill from hunting and finding something, then it is those personality characteristics which will make you a fan of geocaching. No prizes for guessing what my profession is!

The wife wants to be a nurse

;)

Tell her not to do it.

Seriously though, I'm suprised at how many health proffesionals there are in this sport. I too am a nurse, and my wife is a primary school teacher.

I had a chat with an A+E nurse in the hospital I work in and she told me about a fab new game she found with her uncle, It was called Geocaching. She was shocked to hear that I had been doing it for the last two years.

Great, another converted into madness and addiction. :P:o

OK..... So there is only two of us(myself included) that have admitted to currently working in the profession, IT that is....

With all the healthcare workers about, at least you can take some comfort that if you where to fall off a cliff or worse, someone would evetually come along that could deliver some help.:o

Aside from the mention of me being a gadget-head above, I can admit to being sort-of-in-the-IT-field. I'm a PC consultant, in that I spec and build and maintain PCs for my clients. I'm also a voice-over artist. And a recording engineer. And a DJ. And an office administrator. And an hotel night manager.

I think I've covered everything ...

I sort of guessed that MCL would see this - pleased to meet you, heard a lot about you. I also know that you hold the world sleep deprivation record

24 years in the military didn't do me any, any, any, any...... harm! I've had the last 5 years sobering up in civie street managing logisitics projects. They did say I'd have to get used to working for a living! I do find though with my military training and backround I can get more out of geocaching especially when it comes to caching up in the hills where I enjoy this activity the most. I started trigpointing admittedly to improve my COTM score but also because trigs tend to be on the top of hills! Very much looking forward to Aviemore at the end of the month!

Chef here  but I design websites on the side so yeah I suppose you can count me in on the I.T theory!

Interesting subject - I run a family garage services company and design websites on the side - however I would like to be a chef!!!

Before joining the family business I helped set up the UK arm of an industrial computer controls company.

My wife is a senior R&D scientist so I suppose we are both classed as being in the technology sector. My bet though is its something to do with being addicted to gadgets. :o

I'm a technical Trainer for ntl & Sky's main southern installation contractor. As such, I do have a fairly strong IT element to my job as I teach Broadband Installation & Repair and PC Literacy, along with other non PC based Hi-Tech stuff.

I also have my very own client-server network at home, and yes, I'm very much a gadget freak. although, I did get the GPS for a practical purpose, for navigation using a laptop when I used to work for ntl as a field engineer.

Found Geocaching twice whilst searching for GPS software.

Interesting topic.

I am sort of a techy. I am a support engineer for a company that makes equipment for the TV broadcast industry but mainly I am a gadget nut and amateur beer taster. :D

The other members of team Marigold:

The mapless Navigator works in local government and the Mud magnet is at school.

When I got home with the new GPS eyes were cast skyward and I am sure I heard mutters of " Oh he's off on another new hobby. I wonder how long that one will last."

But for once I have managed to convert them and now I get pestered to go out caching.

Well, I teach technical theatre (that's theatrical theatre, not the medical kind) to waifs and strays. That's why my avatar for those with microscopes to see it has me with a headset on. No IT here except for the occasional website update.

Well I've lurked for long enough, I can't resist adding my profession to this list.

I work in the agriculture sector, to be precise I'm an animal medicines inspector. My partner also works in agriculture (in the poultry sector) too.

Are there any other caching agrics out there??

Well, the most modern 'gadget' I get to use at work is a sewing machine which is about 40 years old! I'm a Journeyman Saddler you see and until very recently, we didnt even have a pc at work! I'm the gadget freak of the family though but this is restricted due to funds.

My husband follows the general pattern though, he is a Senior Internet Manager for a travel company.

I am a shift Instrument tech to trade. But I do have a website that I put together for my local bike club does that make me a geek? Actually we did a geek test at work, I think it was in the focus magazine and I turned out to be one of the less geeky members of the dept. (much to everybodys surprise). But then again I dont watch many geeky programs like star trek etc.........

Hi Jackie,

Lovely to see you on the forum a newbie like myself, Cavetroll (Mark) my hubby has been on them for ages but I have only just taken the plunge in the last week or so.

We have four Lancashire Heelers (bred for rounding up cattle and sheep) so in a general way you could say we were sort of into your line of work.
