4000 Jeep Tbs? Have U Found 1?

It's already been decided that they'll be distributed primarily to groups and approvers at first. And from there the individual organizations will distribute them as they please. I think they did say that there would be some that individuals would be able to request too, but that's not ready yet...

What's the real deal?

Was a new server that could handle all the traffic worked into this deal?

I admit, I don't know a lot about computers, but wouldn't 5,000 new TBs each with its own page create more of a memory problem than one locationless cache with a lot of logs?

Aside from 5000 new TBs to move - and maybe 3 cachers winning Jeeps - what does the GC community gain from this commercialism?

Even better than that!

I would think that a single page calling up 1,000 different data elements presents a different memory issue than 5,000 pages with a limited number of data elements, each of which would be called up less frequently than the single locationless cache page.

Ummm, fun? You don't *have* to enter either the random drawing contest or the YJTB contest. Just have fun moving the bugs. Those that do choose to enter that aspect of the contest by writing a story or taking a photo will win the prizes.

I'm sure GC.COM is getting a cut of some sort, which could mean more money for servers, development and an end to the weekend site slowdowns.

Hmmm... There goes the integrity of no merchandising or sponsorships... your next cache will be sponsored by...

Maybe we can form Professional Teams! And be professional cachers with sponsors like other sports! Actual team outfits with numbers on our backs!

Anybody want to join me in purchasing an old yellow school bus, convert it into natural gas powered, grab 10 sponsors at $15,000 a piece and drive around the country caching?

:(

I for one, greatly appreciate what Jeremy has done for this site. I doubt there's anyone here who doesn't really enjoy this sport and where would it be without this site? Can you even begin to imagine the dedication that it has taken? In these few short years, there have been a lot of issues and debates but the sport has continued to grow very well.

The Jeep promotion is an exciting new twist, and if it generates some revenue for geocaching.com, more power to them. I did notice some wording in the Jeep description that is truely a step in the right direction and a return to geocaching's routes. I like the fact that they didn't say anything about high traffic areas, street corners and all those places that we feel funny looking for caches. All the Jeep caches are promoted as hides in the wilderness! I'm looking forward to it!

As usual, ask a question and you get jumped on.

I think asking if GC is getting money to address the recent server issues is a legitimate question. Jeremy answered it in another thread and that is cool with me.

Just because you disagree with something does not mean you are ungrateful - people have their opinions - respect them or stay out of the Northeast forums. I have limited the vast majority of my posts to the NE to avoid the overall stupidity and pettiness of the general forums.

I'd like to keep it that way.

This thread has been effectively hijacked to repeat a discussion about the Yellow Jeep Travel Bugs that is already taking place in the more appropriate forum. Please confine further posts in this thread to be on topic to the original post: that is, distributing, finding and moving YJTB's in the Northeast forum states.

I will be happy to handle any further moderator duties required for posts in the Northeast forums, including compliance with the Forum Guidelines regarding respect for other community members, and who should not be posting in the forums. Thanks.

Could we get some details, or a Markwell to where the details are?

There goes? Are we forgetting Project APE already? There isn't a BAN on commercial caches and such, they just need special permission from Jeremy. It appears that Jeep is doing a good promotion, and hopefully it will be a benefit to them, the site, and geocachers in general. I appreciate that instead of a possible hike in Premium Membership fees, or more restrictions on "free" memberships, Jeremy took this opportunity to get "outside funding".

EDIT: Yeah Keystone, I must have been typing at the same time you were, sorry....

IV, I will assume that you were composing your post while I was posting my request to keep this thread on-topic. Let me take this opportunity to refer you over to this post from Jeremy, where he makes reference to the ability to purchase new servers for the planned server farm. Further details on this or any other aspect of the deal with Jeep ought to come from Jeremy.

The post I linked to, by the way, puts you in the thread where general discussions of the Jeep promotion are taking place. Questions like the recent posts in this topic really belong there, rather than in the regional forums.

I've made contact with GS and will be receiving some YJ travel bugs to disperse around the area. I don't know how many I'm getting yet but I'll let you know. Can't wait. I think this is great marketing and will be good for geocaching as well as Jeep.
