FreedomRider Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 I would be interested in becomming a premium member if I could have access to the GIS points so I can download them into my GIS. This would make my caching much easier and allow me to locate caches "on the road" without having to anticipate ahead of my trips what sites I want to visit. Maybe a premuim user can have access to a certain geographic area (state, mile radius etc) that is updated monthly? Does anyone else have an oppinion on this matter? Thanks Quote
protocoldroid Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 well... if you already have a GIS dataset to use... you can plot all the geocaching waypoints along with that dataset using a Pocket Query as a premium member, that is... I'm not sure what you're using (arc?), but, figure out what you can inport (probably comma/tab delimited lat,lon coords) and use GSAK / GPS Babbel to convert the GPX into something your program can read. ...I dunno if you're saying that GC should offer a GIS dataset (roads, boundaries, telephone poles, elevations, whatever), although I agree that it would be interesting... it'd probably be extremely expense for GC it's even easy to find caches along a route using MS's Streets and Trips.... if you're simply trying to find caches nearby a route. +FreedomRider Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 Yeah, that is a good point. I am sure that the folks at Groundspeak have enough to worry about without creating custom x,y datasets I have map sets in Arcview 8 and it would have been great to import the points and attributes into Arc so I can make my own maps for reference. I certainly can't complain about all the great features we currently enjoy, I was just wondering how hard it would be for that extra compatability. I will do some experimenting with the utilities. Thanks for the response. Quote
FreedomRider Posted May 4, 2004 Author Posted May 4, 2004 Ok, I finally signed up for the premium membership. I figured it was time that I chipped in to support my newest hobby. Plus this also makes requests for improvements carry more weight Quote
protocoldroid Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 I personally think it's hella worth it for the subscription... if they listen harder to ya or not Quote
Red Clover Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 (edited) The 30 bucks is way more than I would have spent w/ any other hobby. And if I didn't already worship the coffee bean, I'd set up a new altar for the PQ Edited: Need more coffee I'm losing the ability to spell ... Edited May 5, 2004 by Red Clover Quote
1setter Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 I use a two step process to create ESRI shape files. I use my membership pocket queries to send the caches to me in GPX format. I use GPSBabel to convert the files into Oziexplorer waypoint (wpt) files. Load them into a map in Ozi and save the waypoints as a shape file. It takes about 2 minutes. Quote
FreedomRider Posted May 12, 2004 Author Posted May 12, 2004 Great Idea I have all the stuff I need to do that. Thanks for the tip... For anyone who has Delorme Topo USA, I upload my points into GSAK, export them as a streetmap *.txt file and then import them as a file into Delorme. It makes great maps that I can use when I am driving around. It helps me see where caches are so I can pick the ones I want to hit . Plus with GSAK on my laptop, I can get all the details on the cache. Quote
