+aka Monkey
If you're offended by what you see on TV then don't watch it. If you're offended by what you see here then don't read it. Eventually you'll isolate yourself from the rest of society and we won't have to worry about you. Or you'll get a position of power in the government and you can spend taxpayer money covering the breasts on statues. Link to comment
+wimseyguy
Add me to the side that is sick and tired of having to watch what I say or type beacuse someon'e child might hear or see it. I guess that means I too agree with U_T and my warn meter has never lit up. I work in a very family oriented facility so I do watch it because someone will complain. Sheesh! I can't even get my beer and wine deliveries without having to cover them up with trash bags because little Johhny might see the word Budweiser! Guess what mommy and daddy-they know the words already!! They hear them at school, on the bus and on TV. They even like the advertising frogs So if we want to express ourselves in the forums with a little empah$!$ sometimes; deal with it! We're not corrupting your children. Link to comment

+hedberg
I really don't know if this has been said before, but these forums use an integrated filter software. It picks up on bad words and edits them to make them a little less offensive. Basically, the software works, but the default corrections aren't always very good. So, sometimes it might be an intentional misspelling, or it may be the forum swear word filters hard at work... And what is a bad word? If I wrote SEX in the Nordic region forum, then it means the number six. *UCK with an S in the beginning is not an offensive word in Swedish (my native language) - it means SIGH. Aren't I allowed to breath? (One example of stupidity: One of the most famous Swedish women that are competing in "horse jumping" (I think it is called like that, they jump over things, on the back of a horse). She has made a CD now, with a song that was called "I wanna ride my horse" or something like that. The american owner of the record label stopped it, because of two reasons: People would think it is sexual AND/OR she wants to do a (for us unknown) drug called HORSE! Hey, we are talking about a professional rider, and she can't sing about horses!? ) I don't believe in controlling people, we are grown-ups (adults) and should be able to handle things by ourself. We don't need a "big brother" watching us and stop us from seeing things they think we shouldn't see. Let us self be the judge (or was it fudge ) of that... My opinion - take it or leave it.. Does it replace the entire word, or chnge a letter or two? Do you know the words that it affects? JeepCachr do you find Blue Tits offensive. In my eyes they are birds but who knows what your thinking. I didn't know it was a bird. Iwas thinking the blue man group went coed Usually, there's a list of words put in by default, just the major swear words, and these words when found by the forum software are simply spelled different to make it a little less offensive. S-H-I-T becomes s*** Basically like I said, there's a default list, but the list can be customized to include whatever words the admins thought were obscene or to change them into different stuff. bug and snake
Four letter words... If you can prove to me that any expletive that I may use on here would be seen by your kids for the first and only time then I will make every possible effort to filter my input to the forum. However, if you are naive enough to believe that your (or any other) children have not heard, and very likely used, these word then you are probably too naive to be a parent in any case. Also, if anyone thinks it is wise to protect their children from the FACTS of living in the real world then, believe me, they are NOT doing the kids any service. When the day comes that mummy and/or daddy are not there to hold the hand and block the ears then that child is in for a mind bending shock when the real world pops into their own cotton lined universe. None of this means that I would encourage a child to cuss etc. However, pretending that it doesn't happen does the child no favors. Link to comment

+RichardMoore
Here's another take on the whole language thing: I consider words to be tools of communication. And like any tool, each one has a purpose or function. There are times when an thought can best be communicated by the use of an "obscenity". I do get somewhat offended when some of the words are used needlessly, but it is the same feeling that I get when someone is using a chisel as a screwdriver. It is not the word that offends me, it is the misuse of it. As Mark Twain said, "Under certain circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer." On the subject of nudity: Some human bodies are beautiful. Just because someone is naked, it doesn't mean they're nice to look at. There are far too many people out there that are ugly enough with clothes on. Link to comment

Additionally, I think I could curl yer teeth and bleach yer hair without a single 'so called' cuss word. It's not in the meaning, it's all about context and implication. Any word used without implication is just a sound. Many will use the 'f' word in the same way as another will say 'Ummmm.....' To gain a moment to think and get the next part straight in their mind. We all know an inveterate swearer. Try this... Ask that person to write down, verbatum, the last sentence they used. Now look and see if the cuss words are on the paper. (to save time - they are NOT!) This means that there is no implication in the use of the words. I may not like it - but I can't, in honesty. take offense in such a case. Link to comment

Some of you already have seen evidence that I do know how to use that type of language, as I gave a nice example of it to a bunch of grown-ups that were acting like playground children in another forum. I know how to use it, but it's not a part of my daily vocabulary. I will, however, use quite offensive language if that is the only thing the low-lifes I'm talking to understand. Otherwise, I can, and do, carry on intelligent conversations with intelligent people without using offensive language. My experience tells me that the lower some people's IQ goes, the more they accept and use offensive language, personal insults, and name calling. Oh, and they also seem to have some #&%$@*& fixation with conspiracy theories and will argue their point until they are finally banned from several forum boards. Link to comment

+JeepCachr
Thank you to all those that debated this topic in a decent and civilized manner. Thank you to those that actually responded to my question. I never asked for censorship. I never asked for new rules. I never said that I was concerned about children reading the forums. All I did is quote the forum guidelines and ask a question about them. For all those that felt it was better to mock me by doing exactly what I was concerned about I can't really post anything without offending myself so I'll lock this thread now. Link to comment
