Offensive Language In The Forums

Recommended Posts

Quoted from the forum guidelines-

Foul Language and obscene images will not be tolerated. This site is family friendly, and all posts and posters must respect the integrity of the site.

Are others offended by the posts that are allowed with obscene words intentionally mis-spelled especially when it is obvious that is the posters intent.

I'm glad to see that caches don't seem to be getting approved with that language but it seems to common in the forums and often instead of it being discouraged people are quoting and LOL'ing about it.

Rather than using $ for S and # for H, etc..., **** should be used.

I don't know maybe I'm being over sensitive but is a "*" even necessary? Are there not enough other words in the english language that the thought or responce can't be expressed clearly?

One problem that I see with this type of language is that it sets the tone for the whole discussion and is most often associated with personal attacks or posts not on topic.

I'm not necessarily say that the moderators should step in and edit or delete posts. I'm asking for forum members to think before they post and not encourage that type of behavior.

I see nothing wrong with the occasional curse word. Often times, people are typing what they are thinking. If those words are a part of their language, they will sometimes be part of their posts. Using $@#*^$ is a way of getting their point across w/o being as openly offensive. I liken this use to "bleeping" on TV. The point is still made, but the word is not technically heard. If the FCC standards are what is being applied here, I think that is fair. If any person can here it on broadcast TV, then it should be acceptable here. I'm not trying to start a war here, but if seeing the edited type (@%#$) is too offensive for you, I do believe you are to sensitive.

I tend to watch what I say, but I also think there is a time and place for cursing, an "*" in place or not. (But most of the time it's not in here.)

Mmmm... Fudge :P

criminal??????what was that..isnt that what he is trying to say needs to stop??if you disagree please say so but dont do it just for the sake of doing it!!

I think Criminal made the same point sometime ago when this issue was raised before. And it points out about how silly it becomes when people use letters as acronym for a phase and people still feel they are offended.

If I type "WTF" and you replace the "F" with something besides fudge then how could I offend you. You did it in your mind. And certainly in Criminal's post you took a whole word and replaced it with something else in your mind and then try to make the point that he was doing something wrong. I know Criminal needs no help from me in defending himself but I think you made his point for him. Are you now saying that replacing words that some people may find offensive with other words is wrong also? So darn it, heck, crap should not be used either.

For me I have never been offended by any words. They are just a way to express one's thoughts. Suppose long ago when words were being decided the word chair was assigned a different meaning than the one we have come to know. And to use Criminal's example one might say, Nothing chairing funny about that. It is just used to make the point. As with any word they are used in conjunction with the words around them. And sometimes there may not be another word that really expresses the person's feelings. I just think it is wrong to try to oppress another person's thoughts which is all words are. So I think that when one is told they can't use certain words they are being told they can't have certain thoughts. That's not something I find myself in favor of.

Ok.. here's my .02 At one time I cursed frequently, it was a habit picked up from friends and some of my family. Though I was never one to let the stream flow around kids or grandmas. Now that I have a child of my own I have, w/ supreme effort, changed my vocab .. are you saying that when I get angry over something and say (insert one of the following examples here) that I'm being a bad mother, role model, and/or offensive :P If any of the below offends you I'm sorry. In this world of PC and bowing and scraping I get offended by the "I'm offended" crowd.

Thats freaking ridiculous

Son-of-a-biscuit eater

God Bless America .. theres usually quite a pause after the first word and the rest as I struggle to be good.. this is reserved for worse case scenarios lol

or Shhh. ugar pills.

Edited for spelling.. hey its early!

I understand this is a family enviroment, but censorship is getting out of hand, I believe. WTF does have a meaning but its not the "Bad Word", that is considered offensive. $ and # and * are not the "Bad Word", so you understand what its intended to say but its not saying it. I feel that it is like the bleeps you hear on tv as stated before in the post. Question: If all the #, $ and WTF offends you do you contact the FCC about shows that bleep, even though you can see them mouth it? This was heavly debated on XM Radio when that DJ got in trouble for doing a racey show on regular radio. I myself do feel that there is a time and place for everthing and usally when the $ and # are in the post it is a time when the person feels strongly about something, and how many of you can honestly say that you have never used a "Bad Word" in the heat of the moment. We are all human and control is not easy for some. Yes they could sit there and use different words to make their point but then if they had to sit and think about it would it really be their point anymore? Thats just my $.02 . OMG I used the $. :P

Looking at it from a purely logical standpoint, there shouldn't be any difference between typing ^$%#! and S*** or F***. If a child doesn't know the words, then neither of them will mean anything. If they do know the words, then there's nothing really to protect them from.

That being said, I agree that there's no reason to be cursing in the forums. It can be offensive to some, and the idea is to have the forums be enjoyable to as many people as possible. The average peson has a vocabulary of close to 40,000 words, so chances are there's another one that will serve to get your point across without offending someone. Also, rampant cursing changes the tone of a place pretty quick... anyone who has played a game online realizes how much more enjoyable it is if you're not in a room full of people hurling epithets at each other. Once people start talking poorly, they often quickly start behaving poorly.

Then there are people like WH, who seem to just want to cause trouble.

If theres something on the TV, radio, or computer that offends you, please notice the button on the device that says "power". Simply push it and you wont have to hear or read the offensive material anymore.

I am so sick of people who would dictate what I can hear, or read because it doesnt fall within their moral guidelines. :P

Oh jumpin' jesus! I can't believe this friggin thread! This forum is just a microcosm of the world as far as people communicating with each other. It's very frustrating when people think others need to shelter THEM from the real world. You're going to hear the @(*$& words in the real world and you're going to see them here. I think it's been suggested before that geocaching itself is a nice family sport but even with the moderation the forums are not a place for kids to be able to read everything that's posted. And if you're offended as an adult then I'm concerned you find reading *@#* offesive enough to write about.

I get offended everytime someone misspells the name GARMIN. I get really upset everytime people spells GARMIN as MAGELLAN.

I think it is really offending and should be stopped by law.

Also every time people write the word geocaching I get offended. I think it should be deathpenalty on using such a strong word :P

Seriously... Do you really get offended if anyone writes anything you don't agree with??

I would be against this effort if it weren't for the kids who read these forums. We do have a fair number of kids reading the forums and I think we should strive to show them "the better angels" of ourselves rather than the bleep fest that we sink to.

I'll sign on.

At what point do we draw the line? I think most everyone will agree that Janet Jackson went to far. But how far does that FCC pendulum have to swing the other way now? Are sitcom couples going to start sleeping in separate beds again? Is Drew Carey's Buzz Beer going to be replaced with Buzz Cola? No more blood or serious injuries on ER? Are we all going to be stuck watching Full House and Little House on the Prairie reruns forever and ever amen?

We all have different ideas about what is offensive. Personally I think Micros are offensive. (Micro people, stop it!) My solution is not to hunt micros. I don't find Fudge offensive. In fact I'll take a good Fudge whenever I can. I am not afraid to say it, I LOVE FUDGE!

I Told you that story so I can tell you this one.

If as an adult you are offended by what you see here in the forums then you are trying to d*** hard to be offended. Lighten up Francis.

If you are worried about your kids seeing something here they shouldn't then you are trying to d*** hard to make everyone else responsible for your child.

The world does not change because you post a sign or make a new rule. The Road of life is long and cold with many hard pointy objects along the way. The sooner a person learns to navigate these things the better. I saw we embrace the Fudge, hold the Fudge. Celebrate the Fudging Fudge in all its Fudging Glory. Viva la Fudge! :P

This world will be a much better place just as soon as people start taking responsibility for themselves instead of relying on others to do it for them. If something offends you, DON'T LOOK AT IT. If theres an offensive program on the tv, CHANGE THE FUDGING CHANNEL. If theres something offensive on a website, CLICK THE FUDGE AWAY.

Stop trying to police others and just concentrate on policing yourself.

This "most everyone" had better not travel over seas and read the 3rd page of a newspaper or watch prime time TV.

"Ooh! I saw a breast! I'm so offended!" Puhleeze!

Perhaps I was assuming to much. Please allow me to clarify.

I was not offended by Janet's display. A boob is a boob. But it was the Super Bowl and kids all around the world where watching. Parents where not given an opportunity to change the channel. There are many shows I choose not to let my son watch because I am aware of the content. There was no reason for anyone to think nudity would be displayed. You put teen idols Timberlake and Spears on stage and kids are going to watch it. That is why I think she went to far. If it had been on HBO no one would have cared.

I second that.

I third it, and my rating has never been over 0, either.

Just a thought, but did it ever occur to people to police themselves?

I mean, if it offends you, quit reading and hit the back button on your browser. Don't go back to that topic... That's just simple logic.

The world shouldn't have to be moderated beause people can't remove themselves from something that disturbs them.

Who cares if her boob came popping out. Why is the nude body something to hide and be ashamed of? Every woman in the world 12 and up has a pair of them. Most of our children feed from them in the begining of their lives, so who cares if they catcha glimpse of one.

To quote the great Ron White.

My daughters are too young to be interested in these forums, but if they were I certainly wouldn't want their presence here deterring freedom of expression. As a parent, I accept responsibility for explaining sensitive issues to my girls. I certainly hope to raise them so they don't take personally words spoken by others. How silly would that be?

Be still my heart.

*rubs eyes to make sure I wasn't imagining that* Nope.. still there.

I'm so happy to see a parent take responsibility that I could kiss you.

I really don't know if this has been said before, but these forums use an integrated filter software. It picks up on bad words and edits them to make them a little less offensive.

Basically, the software works, but the default corrections aren't always very good.

So, sometimes it might be an intentional misspelling, or it may be the forum swear word filters hard at work...

sheesh!! ooooo! i said the s word. i agree with everyone who says to chill out and not get your knickers in a twist. swearing is a part of life, get used to it or stay home with the tv and radio off. kids already know the words. they hear them everyday at school. IMO we do a pretty good job policing ourselves here.

I'm not familiar w/ this k9. Could you elaborate a little. Does it replace the entire word, or chnge a letter or two? Do you know the words that it affects?

JeepCachr do you find Blue Tits offensive.

In my eyes they are birds but who knows what your thinking.

I didn't know it was a bird. Iwas thinking the blue man group went coed :P

1) I watched it. I couldn't see anything. It took people with freeze frames and zooms to find anything.

2) I saw a heck of a lot more boob on the cover of National Geographic growing up.

3) If you put Spears on anything I expect to see nudity before we're done, or at least some good soft porn.

If you're offended by what you see on TV then don't watch it. If you're offended by what you see here then don't read it. Eventually you'll isolate yourself from the rest of society and we won't have to worry about you.
