Benchmark Maps

Where do you got to find a map of benchmarks? Preferably on the website in the same way you would find caches.

We make our own maps.

 

Do a search for benchmarks in the area you want, then download the search results as a "loc" file. Open it in 'Easy GPS' and then transfer the waypoints to a mapping program. We use 'Mapsend topo' to plot the waypoints.

I do about the same as 2oldfarts (the rockhounders), except that I use GPSVisualizer online to make a map, which I print out and bring with me to guide my way through the day of benchmark hunting.

 

It would be nice if/when the GC website has the same feature for benchmarks on the map as it does for geocaches as I suggested here. The suggestion is pretty obvious and I figure the GC people have thought of it before I did, and might get to it someday.

Get the datasheets you're interested in.

 

Step 2: http://www.parkrrrr.com/

Get BMGPX and convert datasheets to gpx format.

 

Step 3: http://gsak.geocaching.com.au/

Get GSAK and convert gpx files to csv files for Microsoft Streets and Trips

 

Step4: Find an old copy of Microsoft Streets and Trips. I paid under $10 for my copy after shipping and handling.

 

GEO*Trailblazer 1 uses National Geographic State Topo's to do the same thing.

While I am one for saving money where you can, I just purchased MS S&T 2004 from Sam's for $22.76 not including tax. It includes Pocket Streets for a Pocket PC. I think the total package is well worth the additional cost.

You get that far then you can use USAPhotoMap. It's free. No routing information, just the ability to plot the points on a topo map or a photo. It can also talk to your GPS to show your tracks.

You might try a different browser or a newer version of the one you're using. That map is a wonderful tool, but it can be a bit finicky.
