+JMBella
This is a great article about the emergence of the Cecada. I figured I would post it so nobody freaks out thinking it was the end of the world while out geocaching. These bug emerge once every 17 years, we're talking billions of them. Basically the come out from the ground, they crawl up anything vertical, they mate, then they keel over and die. Nice life. I can see it now. A new hiding technique. Hidden under a mound of Cicadas and branches. Edited April 5, 2004 by JMBella Quote Link to comment
+Sparky-Watts
Dang, and here I thought this was a thread about mass transit..... Quote Link to comment
+New England n00b
Well, to be fair, i think it kinda IS a bout mass transit... They didn't say PEOPLE, per se... But um... what article? Quote Link to comment
+DeskJocky
Ugh, we had a "minor" showing of then back in 1999. They where annoying, and VERY hard to clean off of your car. I do not look forward to listening to these things while I am caching out in the woods. Quote Link to comment
+Stunod
I thought it was a thread about Sparky's short bus! Quote Link to comment
+Sparky-Watts
Historically speaking, these nasty critters have been responsible for thousands of people going insane and many of those committing suicide because of the annoying sound they make. I hates'em! Quote Link to comment
+JMBella
AHHHHAAAAA! I can't believe it wrote that not once but twice!!! Of course I meant to say the BUGS are coming. LMAO!!!! The BUS!!! I'm never going to here the end of this am I? Quote Link to comment

+carleenp
We had a hatch near here around 4-5 years back. I remember that I specifically went camping to hear them, but I'm pretty nerdy about such things. Quote Link to comment
Keystone
I have edited your topic title from "The Bus are Coming" to "The Bugs are Coming." Twice. When you have recovered your laughed-off posterior, kindly sit on it, look at your monitor, find the link to the article you were trying to discuss in this thread, and post that link, so as to avoid further degeneration of this topic into something out of a Seinfeld episode. Behold the power of cheese. EDIT: Ahhhh, the link was posted while I was typing this masterpiece of moderation. My work is done here. Keystone
You're quite welcome. I'll be sure to add "Bus Repellent" as an essential item on my checklist for urban geocaching expeditions. Quote Link to comment

+Team GPSaxophone
Back on topic here...We have a similar bug in the forests of New Mexico. It's really annoying hearing this buzzing sound coming from all the trees. Not sure if they're related species or not. Quote Link to comment
+bons
Other people plan camping trips timed in the middle of the outbreak, because they want to experience it in its full intensity," he said. Having experienced the living hell this results in all I had to ask myself what kind of person whould want to camp in that insanity storm. We had a hatch near here around 4-5 years back. I remember that I specifically went camping to hear them, but I'm pretty nerdy about such things. Now I know. Quote Link to comment
+wimseyguy
Well, as they said back in the 60's-either you're on the bus or you're off the bus. Ohh bugs, then this is BOT: According to Kritsky, the best time to eat a cicada is just after they break open their youthful skin. "When you eat them when they're soft and mushy, when they come out of their skin, they taste like cold, canned asparagus," he said. Speaking as someone who has cooked and eaten more bugs than most of you; um no thanks. I only get paid to deal with it once a year. Quote Link to comment

Pipanella
I actually like hearing them. It means that it's summer. Much nicer than hearing the snow plow. Quote Link to comment
+Cache Viking
Yuck .... This sounds like the swarm that went through Arizona up near I40 about 3-years ago. It was so bad people were skiding out of control on the Highway as if they were on ice. I am glad we went through the the day before it peaked. My daughter would still be in therapy. We are both city kids..it was creepy.. mom lives on 5 acres of woodland and the noise about drove me to drink while I was there!!!! Quote Link to comment
+JMBella
Love the new avatar JMBella Way to take the proactive approach about the teasing that you will / are goin to receive I've been surprisingly spared. I could have sworn the cicadas were here a few years ago... The cicadas had a small emergence in 2000. That was nothing compared to what's coming. Quote Link to comment
Pipanella
Yes, they're here every summer, but nothing like what's coming. Quote Link to comment
+Sparky-Watts
Yes, they're here every summer, but nothing like what's coming. We're talking about the 17 year cicadas....not the common cicada....the 17 year cicadas are very identifiable by their uniquely annoying sound....they make the common cicadas sound like butterflies by comparison! Needed lots of salt though. Quote Link to comment
