Now This Would Be A Great Area To Place Caches

Recommended Posts

As there is no e-mail address, can anyone make sense of the mailing addres she has posted on the last page. I think its backwards

Different countries and cultures have different ways of writing addresses.

In fact I think it makes sense to have the country at the top, then the region or city, etc. That way, the USPS just has to look at the "first thing" on the address (assuming you're in a top-to-bottom culture; bottom-to-top is, as far as I know, one of the few possible writing systems not [widely] used on the planet).

This is correct addressing for the Russian postal system.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that they are slowly changing to the western standard. That is, name at the top.

I have recently recieved a package from a friend in Moscow, and she wrote her return address as I would here.

That was a neat web site. There were some really amazing pictures there.

One line cracked me up though:

"Zoologists also brought two American Bisons, but idea to breed them didn't work out and bison male run away. I don't know, if he run from radiation or from his bride, but last time bison has been seen in Belorusia, he heading west and may be he just decided to return to America. ".

For some reason I can picture this bison running back towards the US, trying to run for his life and away from his bison bride. :D

Or, of course, she's adapting for a foreign audience :D

My friends are in Moscow, Irkutsk/Angarsk(Siberia), and Novokuznetsk/Kemerovo (Siberia) They have started useing the Name at the top now too but otherwise they still use the old convention starting with country and working their way down. Change is slow there. As you can see from the pictures It is a beautiful country. The Commissar recommends a visit for those looking for a vacation off the beaten path! Very neat place to visit, but I like it just fine in the good old USA!

very interesting read.  thanks for sharing.  do you remember times beach, mo?  if i recall correctly there use to be a cache there.

Oh my god. I'd completely forgotten Times Beach! I used to co-own some property there, and we wound up donating it to the city about two years before the whole place got shut down.

You could certainly make Chernobyl a virtual. Just post a picture of yourself with the GPSr with the plant in sight.

Cute, too! Now if she wasn't pumped full of radiation I might consider wanting to father her children.

I'm glad someone commented on her looks before I did. Couple more years of doing what she's doing and she'll literally be smokin'.

The desolation is amazing. I'm sure the quiet is truly unsettling. Be a great place for a terrain 1 / difficulty 5 cache. Stick a cache right out in the open of the Red Forest. Where ya gonna find an anti-rad suit, dosimeter, and someone to decon ya? Not to mention the leaden glass box your GPS will have to go into if you wanna take it out of the area with ya.

Commissar, I plan to visit Russia an about a year. Of course, nothing is set in stone, but that's my idea.

I am going this September. Wonder if I can get a ride on the back of her bike?

Is it just me or does it look like the radiation has had an affect on her looks/face???

Wow! I read (and was impressed by) that site when this was first posted, but I remember thinking she was a kid. She certainly looks haggard now.

Were her other adventures online then? I'm reading the WWII artifacts thread, and it's interesting, too.

I hate to burst everyone's bubble....but most of the stuff with the motorcycle riding through the wasteland is pretty much a hoax... Google it if you don't believe me.

Chornobyl "Ghost Town" story is a fabrication TOP <#top>

e-POSHTA subscriber Mary Mycio writes:

I am based in Kyiv and writing a book about Chornobyl for the Joseph Henry Press. Several sources have sent me links to the "Ghost Town" photo essay included in the last e-POSHTA mailing. Though it was full of factual errors, I did find the notion of lone young woman riding her motorcycle through the evacuated Zone of Alienation to be intriguing and asked about it when I visited there two days ago.

I am sorry to report that much of Elena's story is not true. She did not travel around the zone by herself on a motorcycle. Motorcycles are banned in the zone, as is wandering around alone, without an escort from the zone administration. She made one trip there with her husband and a friend. They traveled in a Chornobyl car that picked them up in Kyiv.

She did, however, bring a motorcycle helmet. They organized their trip through a Kyiv travel agency and the administration of the Chornobyl zone (and not her father). They were given the same standard excursion that most Chernobyl tourists receive. When the Web site appeared, Zone Administration personnel were in an uproar over who approved a motorcycle trip in the zone. When it turned out that the motorcycle story was an invention, they were even less pleased about this fantasy Web site.

Because of those problems, Elena and her husband have changed the Web site and the story considerably in the last few days. Earlier versions of the narrative lied more blatantly about Elena taking lone motorcycle trips in the zone. That has been changed to merely suggest that she does so, which is still misleading.

I would not normally bother to correct someone's silly Chornobyl fantasy. Indeed, correcting all the factual errors and falsehoods in "Ghost Town" would consume as much space as the Web site itself. But the motorcycle story was such an outrageous fiction that I thought the readers of e-Poshta should know.

Whether the woman did or did not ride her bike through the dead zone does not deny the existance of the dead zone!

The lessons and implications here are about the foolishness of man, danger of the nuclear industry and at least one nation's total disregard for the life and safety of its citizens.

Attacking the messenger for her manner and style of presentation is hardly addressing the issue!

A horrible thing happened and will happen again unless the world learns.

i doubt there is a park there, i could be wrong. last time(nov 2001) i was thru there the exits were still blocked & fences were up, but you could see where people had gotten thru. going east on I44 it is before eureka/six flags.
