Where Does Your Computer Bus Go?

Recommended Posts

It’s late. You’ve been out geocaching (or maybe something else). Or it could be early; you just got out of the shower.

It’s not important.

You fire up the computer. What is your regular routine? What are your priorities? Do you check your email, balance your bank account, read the news or go immediately to geocaching.com?

Typically, I check my email first and then come directly to the forums to see what’s up. Everything else is on the back burner. I’m just funny that way.

Where does your computer take you? :DB)

Usually this order:

1.E-mail first

2.Then the GC.COM forums

3.Then I visit some Usenet groups (REC.SKIING.ALPINE, REC.SKIING.NORTH-AMERICA, REC.BACKCOUNRY, ALT.REC.HIKING, SCI.ARCHAEOLOGY, REC.OUTDOORS.CAMPING and ALT.HISTORY are some I frequent).

4. Then I check the forums att WWW.NYNJTC.ORG

5. Then I poke around WWW.WFMU.ORG, WWW.GORP.COM, WWW.MCYSA.ORG, WWW.LOCALHIKES.COM and a few other websites.

6. Then I check back here to see the responses my flames and trolls.

wash, rinse, repeat....

1: Slashdot.org

2: E-mail

3: GC.com

4: Fark.com

Then I hit up USENET. I'm only subscribed to three newsgroups (right now) (though the entire alt.comp.* hirearchy is interesting):

alt.shenanigans

alt.agnosticism

alt.comp.sys.palmtops.pilot

1. Check forums for posts requiring moderator action.

2. Check cache approval queue for new caches to review, and process new caches.

3. Check "Watering Hole" (the private forum for volunteer reviewers).

3. Check e-mail account for Keystone Approver, and respond to e-mails.

4. Sign onto IRC and join ClayJar's geocaching chat. Enable text-to-speech agent so I can listen to conversation while doing other work; tab over to that window when I want to comment on something.

5. Check my personal e-mail account.

6. Read the forums for personal interest rather than moderator interest.

7. Read the forums for the four regional/local geocaching groups I've joined.

It is now four hours later. Are there other things to do on the internet?

Wow... it's been years since I read USENET. Is the spam, crapflooding, and flame wars still as bad as it used to be?

Depends on the group. Some are pretty spam free and others are nothing but. Same for the flame wars. REC.BACKCOUNTRY has turned into an flame war between Bush haters and Bush backers and most of the rest of the posts are by, or about a semi-famous environmental extremist named Mike Vandemann.

The best flame war is in REC.SKIING.ALPINE, where participants have been taken to court, lost their jobs, received death threats and had their cars and homes vandalized because of the forum. I go there for comic relief because there isn't much about skiing there anymore. Any time I think things are bad here, I stop by R.S.A. to get my bearings and remember what bad really is.

Most of the other groups I visit are no different from here. Nice people trying to help others, or have sincere questions answered. And a few jerks sprinkled in.

I'm such a computer-moron I didn't know that was possible. Very cool. :D

For those who are curious: The Use of Agents with mIRC. Download and install, and then you too can listen to geocachers drone on in a monotone computer voice. The folks in #geocache will be glad to help if you are having problems getting text to speech agent to talk to you.

Well, I usually check my email, which has about a thousand "Topic Subscription Reply" messages, which take me directly to the forums. Then, I read two local online newpapers, then surf for Kitty Porn....oh, wait...where's my "Delete" button?!?!? Oh, no!!! The wife has stolen my "Delete" and "Backspace" buttons!!!!! Oh, heck.....guess I have no choice but to post.....

I used to use one of those text-to-speech agents, but I would get to laughing too hard to concentrate....and, I never took the time to "train" my voice-to-text program, so most of the time it would write some really bizarre things, and then the laughter would start again, and then it would try to decipher and write the laughter, which just made me laugh harder....it was a vicious circle!!! B)B)B)

One example: While attempting to engage in cybersex with someone, one reply I made came out as "....hot weather map of the psyche.".........so, that didn't exactly perpetuate the mood...... :D:D:D:D

Sparky, you're describing speech to text software (i.e., dictation software). I agree that it's not very reliable. But what I was talking about is an agent that reads all of the text which people type into the chat, so that I can listen to it.

Cybersex is not an appropriate topic for discussion in these forums. Neither are the chatlogs which my ex-wife left on the computer hard drive. My favorite line: "Ooooh, baby, you type so well."

My software would also read back what was written in the chatroom I hosted.....and, no, I was never good at cybersex because of the constant typos.....I can't explain, your imagination will suffice......

there's like... 2 or 3 replies where -work- was actually mentioned, and at least one where work was almost.. skipped!

*whew* makes me feel better about the last couple days... i caught the geocaching fever again, and have been scouring cache pages and lurking about the forum with a fury!

i clock so many hours burning my retinas at the CRT, it'd be hard to get into detail, but... in general...

1. first thing in the morning, check mobile for mail, check email

2. reply to all mail

3. wait for calls, if no calls... hit up /. , macromedia nntp (and last couple days GC) for a while.

4. start slingin' code for werk / other werk tasks

5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 get interrupted by clients, lose train of thought, repeat 3.

13. when i'm totally beat from that, way later at night... grab a cold one and do all frivolous things i've been dreaming about all day... e.g. right now GC

I admit I had to click over to the dictionary (there ARE websites besides gc.com) to look up incubus. Oh my. The first def that came up is more than a little shocking. And that combined with the Kitty Porn.

You are quite the Tom Cat.

1) email

2) www.gasbuddy.com(got to find the cheapest gas for geocaching) Actually, I go straight to www.desmoinesgasprices.com. I would be Mistomax, which is what I should be here, but I'm "Balboagirl" instead. Long story told elsewhere.

3) gc.com--the home page, to see if anybody's found anything around here

4) gc.com--the forum
