Cave Mappers Lives May Depend On Cache

Recommended Posts

Just read this article about some British cave divers who have been attempting to map part of the Great Barrier Reef and have become stranded due to a rising water table. :)

This caught my eye:

"They also knew that a previous expedition had stashed another five days' worth of supplies in parts of the cave system that never flood"

I sure hope these guys are able to make it out. :)

please note that they are not diving the great barrier reef, that was just a metaphor, they are really in a huge cave system on the Ucatan (sp?) Penninsula in Mexico.

I hope it all turns out well

Latest news is that all 6 have been detained by the Mexican authorities over Visa problems. 5 of the 6 are UK military and were there for military adventure training (meaning the MOD, are paying their recreation costs), but entered Mexico on tourist visas. Further arguments are taking place, as they insisted on waiting for cave diving rescue personnel from the UK, with whom they had previously trained, rescue them from the flooded cave system. A unhappy ending to a happy ending!

I was wondering about that.

Also, I know it is dangerous and all, but if you are diving and the water level increases....would that really pose that much of a problem?

They weren't diving. They were exploring on foot and the water level came up and cut off their exit. Divers were sent to rescue them.

Yikes!
