+GOT GPS? Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 Check out this link: Star Date March 19, 2004 What do you think? I have noticed that the north magnetic pole has moved a little bit in the last few years. Website talking about the movement of the North Magnetic Pole Quote
Major Catastrophe Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 Nothing new there. I remember that when I first learned about maps and compasses, the magnetic declination in NW Oregon was 4 or 5 degrees more than it is now. Quote
+fizzymagic Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 The moving magnetic pole will have no effect on GPS position fixed. It will have an effect on GPS units with a built-in magnetic compass, though. This is a good reason why using true north is much more reliable than using magnetic north for projections, etc. Quote
4x4luv Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 A couple of month ago there was a show on P.B.S.(I think NOVA) the whole show was about this subject. It is not as far fetch as every body thinks. Quote

The location of magnet North is always in motion. It's not indicative of an impending pole shift. Quote

+Runaround Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 Sudden only in geological terms. You won't wake up tomorrow with your compass pointing the wrong direction. From the geology classes I've taken, past pole shifts took a couple thousand years to complete. Quote
+TeamK-9 Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 We learned about this in science just a little while ago. I guess when the poles switch there's a time lapse where like the ozone, and a bunch of other protective things just sort of disappear, and scientists have proved that extinction of alot of species have been linked to magnetic pole reversal in one way or another, but I don't think it will happen... dsandbro Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 Poll shift? Isn't that when pollsters first declare john kerry in the lead, a week later it's Bush, then back again, etc? Quote
+Galbion Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 Personally I've been waiting for the poles to reverse. We're long overdue (several 100,000 years or so). Now that would be confusing! Quote
