New "my Cache Page"

Recommended Posts

alll righty- here's my $.02:

i've finally waded through this thread, and feel ready to make comment.

what i like is that a lot of things i've been asking for have been added, plus some things i didn't know i wanted. that little calendar is prety spiffy.

i like the new little ammo can icon. i don't remember exacly where i saw it; apparently it isn't being used uniformly. i hope it will be the standard. if you haven't been following my every last remark about changing icons, i'll just catch you up to speed by saying that i am change resistant and it's a rare icon change that i think is a good one. there is also a cute-free zone for twenty yards around me, so you can imagine that iconic representations pose something of a problem for me.

what i do NOT like is that the page looks very cluttered to me. from reading through the other posts, it seems that this is at least partly due to the browser i'm using. i don't pretend to know a lot about coding, but i'll bet there's a way to have less text appear. some of the meaning is clearly conveyed in the icons already.

I first thought it was some glitch while logging (since the site kept forcing me to log out and then back in about every 3-5 logs, grrrr.) but there's some kind of glitch in the value of the dates but it's inconsistent. Almost every other log alternates between today's date and the log date. On some days - all on my last 30 day page - it does this weird alternation thing and on some days it doesn't. Offhand, I don't see the pattern. My Feb 20 hunts do this and last Friday's hunts do this, but by Feb 25 hunts don't. The records themselves, viewed any place but this new page, seem fine.

Here's a screen shot of the new and old pages side by side for the same day.

Thanks robertlipe.

The problem was explained to me by hidnsek over the weekend, that the date listed was the date the log entry occured and not for the actual log date. This morning I corrected it, but ended up half correcting the display for every other listing.

I removed the MS centric valign tag, and added nowrap to the line that contains the icon and date. I'll install Mozilla and see if I can duplicate the html problems that I've seen and adjust accordingly.

I didn't see the error myself even checking with other user accounts because they, like me, entered the logs the same day that I found them. Your account helped me track down the display problem.

Thanx for the fix, Jeremy. The dates no longer show me time-travelling on my long weekend to the Midwest Geocaching Invitational. Though smiley-man still has one boxy ear (analyzed as a 16 pixel image being scaled to 15) the break after the date is now right.

the alt tags for Frownie Man are still quoted improperly:

<td valign="top" align="left" height="16" width="16"><img src="my_files/icon_sad.gif" width="16" height="16" border="0" alt="Didn" t="" find="" it=""></td>

You have four proprietary attributes (2 for IE4, two for NS4) in your "body" tag.

Programmer to programmer, you'll find yourself a much happier man writing pages that pass through tools like 'tidy' or http://validator.w3.org/ . It goes a long way toward not having to test with a zillion browsers. (oh, and not using similar-but-different code to format the grey lines than the white ones. :-)

Thanx!

Thanks, Jeremy! With these changes implemented and the log entries in a single line, the new page is significantly better.

I still have some comments/requests:

- Would it be possible to add a 'show all logs' next to 'last 30 days' ? If we have that, the one big reason to go back to the old page will be eliminated. Frankly, it would probably eliminate the ONLY reason to go back to the old page.

- I'd be happy if 'caches waiting for approval' would be listed in Quick View under the Inventory, rather than just in the My Geocaches page.

- In addition or instead of the member benefits tab, could we have a My PQs tab?

Thanks!

It's getting better..but most of my suggestions from 1-2 days ago still apply.

I've found 2 more:

1. On QUICKVIEW PAGE: Right hand side states "Search for nearest caches from home coordinates or in Massachusetts".

The links actually take you to: "Search for nearest caches from home coordinates.

Search for NEWEST caches in Massachusetts."

2. It would be COOL to be able to see a quick summary of number of caches found. Just the total #.

Right now, only way I'm finding is several clicks away. ??

>View profiles as others see you > User Stats

3. The calender could be improved by having a drop down for the month & another for the year. If I want to go back to a caching trip we took to ME last August.....it's several clicks to go by each month.

4. Asking this one again (PLEASE!!) Please include the state name with the cache name. It helps on the LOGS & on the WATCHLIST.

I like to plan multi-cache trips to surrounding states. It helps in the watchlist here. And later, when looking at all caches found, I can see 15-20 in a row from a cache trip just be seeing the state name. It brings make memories of a great trip!

(PLEASE!!!)

My complaint was no way to access a list of owned geocaches, and that's been fixed with the "(mine)" link after geocaches - which would be better as a seperate top link called "logs" -- ie, "watchlist | Logs | GeoCaches | Travelbugs (mine)"

cause see, that last thing is what i want. a "(mine)" after travelbugs.

Thanks.

Added the unsupported stats image thingy to the Quick View (since people were requesting their find/hide listed).

Added a quick link to Cache, Bug and Benchmark logs.

Added the list of caches awaiting approval on Quick View

Changed some of the text around to make it more readable

Resized the "found" and "not found" icons so all the icons are uniform 16x16 pixels in size.

Jeremy,

The new page layout looks great although it will take a bit of getting used to. One thing I miss was the listing of "my hidden caches" being up front and foremost, now I have to make a conscious effort to find the link that will take me there since it doesnt jump out and scream your caches are here....

Also there is one error (I assume it is an error) that I found last night, we placed a new cache, came home and reported it as a new cache. When you check your cache list the new cache does not show up. I had to go to the old cache page in order to see it and edit the cache listing. Someone may have already reported this but I thought I would just mention it...

Thanks for the good work!

That might just be because it hasn't been approved yet. On the old page, yet-unapproved caches would show along with the approved one (recently submitted on top). On the new page, they have their own space, and the approved caches are listed with most-recently-found (or logged?) on top.

Jeremy, thanks for the quick implementation of all the changes!

I love the latest tweaks! You've done an amazing job and your response to the feedback has been exemplary! Can't wait to see what you and others come up with next! I haven't been doinf this long enough to know what to ask for, but I know when I see something I like and this is one of those things.

Thanks!

Jeremy-

In adding that, you seem to have removed the "see your profile as others see you" (or something like that.)

I had been using that to get to my user stat page. At the moment I don't know how to get there easily without going through the old page.

:o

Edited to add:

OK, now I see. Click on the "stats image thingy"...

Jeremy, congrats. It looks as if with the recent changes, all the functionality of the old page has returned, which means we now have a situation of net improvement - I don't think I'll need the old page anymore. Every future requests for changes will be for further improvement, and no longer for restoring lost functionality.

In this spirit, could I ask again for a My PQs tab? That's an individual page which deserves a tab like all the other tabbed pages - except for 'Membership Benefits', which doesn't belong in the 'my cache' section at all, but should rather be classified somewhere else with the general GC pages.

And something else - a little annoyance that existed on the old page as well as on the new page, and could probably be improved. I log my caches in chronological order, as I find them. Now, if I found caches 1 and 2 yesterday and caches 3 and 4 today, they will be listed in the following order:

3

4

1

2

Could that be turned into reverse chronological order, with the most recent logs at the top?

Thanks!

My one and only request is still to have a (filter finds) link next to nearby benchmarks on the quick view page. Other than that, it's shaping up to be a pretty good thing. Thanks.

That would be an improvement I'd like as well - but I'm file with having it on the BM tab, rather than on the Quik View tab.

I have just been kind of sitting back watching the new My Cache page evolve and with all of the great suggestions and subsequent changes it is just awesome. I really like all the new functionality.

Just one little possible bug to note:

On the Watchlist page, the Moun10Bike geocoin icon does not show up. Not a big deal, but I have checked it over the last couple of days and it is always missing.

Thanks a bunch for all the improvements,

Rocket Man

The context of the 'view archived' link in the lower part of the window is confusing... It took me some thinking to understand that this link was not supposed to bring me to a lit of archived-yet-unapproved caches, as the context suggests (duh), not to a list of all my archived caches, but to a full list of all logs, including those on archived caches. If this is indeed the purpose of the link, it should probably be at the top of the list among the display options, and not in the lower right corner...

Great enhancements, Jeremy. Each of the last few days has been exciting just to log in. And today, to have the number of finds show up front and center...awesome.

I also appreciate your fix of the alignment problem pointed out by others, and the various ones I had not noticed. I am lukewarm on the calendar feature - probably won’t use it much. But thanks anyway. One can never have too much functionality.

The most common click for me is the “Filter Finds” link. I wonder if it would be possible to also filter out the "disabled AND found" caches. When I search using the “Filter Finds” on the nearest caches most of them are disabled and I never want to see them. Many of them have been disabled the entire time I have been geocaching. I would suggest doing this either in a “Preferences” sections of one’s Profile or with a little check box just below where it says “Filter finds”.

In a similar way you could even add a toggle between “nearest” and “newest” - man that would be cool.

I also have a counterintuitive suggestion to improve through-put on Saturday and Sunday evenings. When clients log their finds, the current system shows the submitted log when one hits the submit button. Why not send that person directly back to the cache page where that log-entry has been added. I know that on sluggish evenings I prefer to verify that my comment ended up where it was supposed to. I know it’s stupid and slows things down even more, but I would bet I am not the only one doing that. If you take things back directly to the newly updated page, then you would not have to create the log submission verification page at all.

Just want to point out a formatting problem, (I think)...

A cache I found (GC7B0) has been archived. However, in my "Found It" listing on My Cache Page, it does not show up red with a line through it. For whatever it is worth, the find was on Sep 28, 2003 and the archive was on Nov 11, 2003.

Cache listing GCGZE3 is also affected by this.

Perhaps I missed something about the formatting of archived caches in My Cache Pages stated earlier in the thread. If so, my apologies.

(Oh yeah - Internet Explorer 6.something)

Thanks again for the great work, I love the new pages!

it could take the place of the member benefit tab, which i don't need. at all. ever.

First of all. I like the new look of "My Cache Page" My question is how do I do a query that will return all my found caches that have been archived or are temporarily in active? I thought I knew, but using the "I have found" and "not active" only returns a partial number. Even doing a query of all that "I have found" does not pick up these inactive caches.

Thanx

Like all the recent improvements to the page.

Relating to the Calendar:

If a drop-down for months/years isn't possible/feasible, a suggestion would be to add "<<" and ">>" to the mix. The "<<" and ">>" would jump years much like the "<" and ">" jump months.

I've seen this implemented on websites - PHP based I believe.

This is a nuance request, not an issue; again Jeremy, your responsiveness to the myriad issues has been fantastic. I've said it before and will again, way out-performing many other businesses.

Anyway, today I double-checked a newer cache of mine someone had trouble finding, and linked to "my/owned.aspx" to not find my cache!?!! As I looked more closely at the listing, I saw it was sorted in the order cachers found my caches, rather than the order I placed them. This is rather non-intuitive and means the list will keep changing order rather than being consistent: confusing!

The recent cache I was looking for was buried in the middle while my first placement, recently found after no traffic for >200 days was 2nd from the top, while a newer one found in the past week was topmost!

I'd prefer to consistently see the list of my caches in the order I placed them with "age" since last find (days) rather than date (which required I mentally figure out how long ago that date is--make the computer do the work!)

Thanks for the consideration,

Randy

Hi Jeremy,

sorry for not having the nerve to read 5 pages if this was mentioned before,

but I noticed the following:

I don't find a way to display all my submitted caches, i.e. also the ones that where never approved (which was possible on the "old" my page).

Thanks for your advice,

Oo-ooo! Just had a feature request brainstorm on that previous thought...

As part of "my/owned.aspx", what do you think about a maintenance button, that when clicked, records the date internally, then lists the number of days since last maintenance in another column!

That way, rather than keeping track of when I maintain caches on my own separately, this could be recorded in one place for easy reference! (Secondarily, it might function as a reminder for those less observant in maintenance...)

Enjoy,

Randy

It might just be me, but when I go to an individual cache page from the new 'my cache page', I am unable to download the .loc data for that cache. It brings up the http://www.geocaching.com/waypoints/ page. If I then go back to the old 'my cache page and go to the individual cache page I have no problem downloading the .loc data. The waypoint page says "You have already read and accepted the license agreement." I suspect it just is not passing on the login info.

Other than that small item, the new 'my cache page' is a big step forward.

Thanks for all your efforts

Allowing it to be different is sort of the point of HTML; rendering decisions should be made by the person that has to look at them, and not by the site presenter. What looks good on a 2048x1536 monitor will look really badly on a cell fone. So it's not suprising that it's different on your system.

It looks like that specific browser session rendered it in 12 point serif at 96dpi. I'm not particularly one to override fonts, just letting the browser and X server work it out. If a site goes nuts with ransom-note looking fonts, backgrounds, colors, etc, I'll revoke its right to change them.

Great work Jeremy! I knew the forum frequenters would get every suggestion I could think of in (which wasn't many to begin with). I just waited it out, and now it's great! Now you're just one click away from anything I'd want to look at.

WheresGeorge went through a MAJOR renovation for the whole website a while back. People were complaining big time. But once you got used to the "new" site, it's just as easy as before. Same thing with this change, I knew I'd get used to it and even like it eventually. Now I'm at ease with it and like it better than before.

Great Job!

I am not sure whether my main question fits into this thread, but I could not find another one which seems more suitable. Maybe the issue of the new upper limit on the length of the watch list of non members has been brought up somewhere else. A quick search did not bring up any result, and I neither have the time nor the ambition to read the great number of postings I am not interested at all.

I do not like the new my cache page at all, but that it not that surprising as unlike the majority of the people here I prefer a simple design to a stylish one.

Let me come back to my main point: It seems that the upper limit on the length of the watch list has been decreased from 100 down to 50. Apparently entries above the limit of 50 have not yet been deleted, but one cannot add further entries without deleting entries until one arrives below the 50 limit.

It is perfectly acceptable for me that non members are offered only a restricted access. In my opinion, it would, however, been much more polite and less-frustrating to communicate such changes at a place where everyone can view them quickly (without having to search through hundreds of postings dealing with other issues).

I would greatly appreciate an area for information on major changes which is even accessible for those who are not logged in (I am tired of logging in just for reading some information, in particular because I never manage to stay logged-in for more than 30 minutes) and where replies are not allowed. This way the area would stay in a state which makes it attractive also for those who wish to learn about important changes quickly without being bothered by the tons of postings containing the personal opinions of the forum posters.

Moreover, it would have certainly been nice to be informed somewhat in advance about the upcoming change of the limit. I had added some caches to my watch list simply because I knew that I was far off the upper limit of 100.

After using the new "My Cache" page for nearly a week, I must say I LOVE IT! At first I was sure I wouldn’t like the new page, but now the old page seem archaic. All the bells and whistles, new functions and the layout are great. It seems everything I need is now only a click away. Keep up the great work! :):)

Is it possible to mark the FTF cashes in a special way ?

The big issue with this as a feature is the grumblings that would occur if someone claimed the first find and they just ended up being the first find logged on the web site. There's no real way we (as a web site) can correctly judge who the first finder really was.

Of course I suppose the cache owner could determine this, but it will take a bit more work to have a feature available that is fair. It is a neat idea though, even if the implementation may need some work.

I have a license for a richer featured calendar system. I'll see if I can implement it in the next few days.

Did a search of the thread and this was the closest response to a few comments that I'd like to re-echo:

When you look into this better calendar, can you please add local/regional/state-wide event cache upcoming dates to the calendar? This will help those of us calendar-minded people to keep track of the dates better.

Thanks.

I really like the new format for these pages. I have a couple of minor suggestions for the Quick View tab:

1. The page title is My Account Details. Now that the content for this page is spread across multiple tabs, wouldn't this page be more appropriately titled My Account Summary?

2. The You are Logged in as.... information appears in two places on this page - in the green border and on the Quick View tab (occupying prime screen real estate.) I'd vote for losing the duplicate reference in the Quick View tab

OK, I one more suggestion...would it make sense to group your action links in the gray area in the top right of the screen? (i.e., reposition the Lookup/Email Another Player and Run PQ links under Update Home Coordinates.)

Hmmm...one more observation... the links View Nearby Benchmarks and Search for Nearest Caches from your Home Coordinates appear to perform similar functions, one for benchmarks and the other for caches. Similar labeling would help users connect with this point.

I'm thinking something simple like:

Quick Links

Cache Search

Near Home (filter finds)

Newest In California

Benchmark Search

Near Home

Account Actions

Edit Profile

Update home coordinates

Lookup/email another palyer

Manage Pocket Queries

Although...I'd vote for giving PQs their own tab and making Member Services a simple page link off the My Account Detail(Summary) page.

Overall, I really like the new changes. Thanks for all the hard work!

One implementation I could see would be to have some sort of unique id that is generated along with the cache page creation. The cache owner would then supply that unique id in the logbook for the FTF (or he could supply it via email to the finder). And the FTF would take that slip of paper and be able to enter the id in his find. The entry box would then not display for subsequent finds for that cache since the FTF flag would be set for the cache. And there would also be some sort of flag set for the user's log.

Sorry, I tried to wade through all the posts before reporting this bug but since it has not be fixed yet as most of the problems I read have I'm going to assume it's unreported.

The other day found 2 DNF's that I logged back in December and January. I like to clear my DNF posts by editing them to finds and updating the date. Under the the new "My cache page -QUICK VIEW" these updated dates do not show up in find date order as they do under the old cache page. It will show up correctly if you click on view all cache logs from the new page.

I also had an enhancement request (or maybe I just need to know how to do it). I would like a feature where I could read all the cache logs posted sorted by newest posts and by distance my home coordinate. Basically I like to read the latest logs in my area.

I've seen where you can do this systemwide but that is not as interesting to me.

P.S. I like the new page, keep up the good work, your on a roll.

Or even easier: in addition to the Found, DNF, Note etc. options, add an FTF option.

The person who was the real first to find can log an FTF, everyone else will just log a Find. The cache owner can delete false FTFs once he determines that they're false, which will happen soon enough if more than one person claim an FTF. Or he can leave them, just as he can decide to leave false Find logs, if he so chooses.

Every geocacher will be able to retroactively change his own FTF Finds into official FTFs, and have them count, if he so chooses.

It would be important that the statistics count FTFs separately, while at the same time recognizing the FTFs as Finds and include them in the Find count.

It would be nice if the identity of the FTF would get a special location at the bottom of the cache page, but befoer the logs.
