let them go for numbers ; the original cacher I`m sure would approve of cachers going for fun of the find not the HUGE number of finds in a day/week/month .

besides what enjoyment is there if you don`t " take some time to stand and stare " (to borrow a few words)

35 in a day ......... wheeew do you really like to spend so much time driving (cos you sure as hell aren`t walking ).... remember K.I.S.S. keep it simple sweetheart :)

I found the title referent but the container is missing. Placed a camoflauged micro container with new log only. So others need to bring pen. owner may want to change the container size on listing. TFTH.

Found the infamous magnet, but no cache

icon_smile.gifOctober 29 by seems rediculous(169 found)

#169- Yes, found the infamous magnet..... I'd have to agree with No DNF, it needs to be archived. I wouldn't mind putting one in this area myself. It seems as if the owner of this cache has not even logged onto geocaching website since April, and probably has no intention of replacing this cache. I am going to see if I can get it archived. If I can, then I will head back out to this area and put out a good quality cache! Logging a find for a magnet in the middle of nowhere seems rediculous, but "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!"

How about a little benchmarking?

Who needs to actually go there when you can see the water tower on Google Earth?

Provide the same Google map link that's on every page and you've got some free BMs there. ;)

This guy apparently found 141 benchmarks by just looking them up and going from there.

I guess finding your own is okay...it let's me do it

Ok, my apologies if this has come up before. (I'm just kind of lazy when it comes to forum searches and couldn't find anything else on it! :D )

I am a firm believer of not logging ones own caches (and I know people that do!) (Delorme or similar type caches being the exception), however, I have put on two events. I've hmm'd and haw'd about marking myself there but I was actually there and did mark myself as "attended" is this against general geocaching etiquette also?

Link to comment

As far as logging yourself as having attended your own event, I asked that question of a veteran who has put on many Cache Machine events. His answer to me was yes he did. That was his way of awarding himself for all the work he had done. So, I did log my own event. That was over six years ago. Many may not agree with that but I sure wouldn't

mind any of the event holders logging they attended their own events. Dick

If you can't find the cache but find some papers which are unreadable then the assumption is the papers must belong to the cache. Or at least that's good enough reason for one person.

The cache location was in a busy downtown area with 2 state highways on each side near a major size college with several bars and restaurants on the corners. Papers in the area? Gee, ya think?

Me, the kids, grand-kids and great grand kids went camping at Little Grassy Lake for the week-end and along with seeing lots of interesting sights, doing some fishing, and such things as tourists do we managed to get in about a dozen caches. You might want to check this one out because 3 of us looked high and low in every tree for several blocks without any luck. Could it have fallen deep into the crevice of the tree???????

A great time that started off dry after the Event but started to pour on us as we were searching for the final. Very cool effects on both parts as a multi but I'm sure it will be a nice regular cache too. Great area. Alot of fun in any weather with a great bunch of cachers.

Congratulations on a terrific first hide!

I think this is the most people I've ever 'shared a FTF' with - I guess that's really reaching! Seriously though, this was great fun even in the pouring rain. Only one thing could have made this better, and about 20-25 other soaking wet cachers know what I mean.

Well I kind of attended. I was the only one there at 4:00 as far as I could tell. No other cars in the parking lot for the area. I had lots of coins to have discovered and more than a few to swap and some to trade but ...

I know that 4:00 was a bit late but the event was supposed to last until 6:00. I guess I could have hung around for the huge number of folks who must have shown up after me but I had some stuff to do back in Portland so ...

Except for the finds on the way to and on the way back it was a real waste of my gas and my time.

Maybe in the future a narrower schedule can be used.

From the guidelines.

The owner will assume the responsibility of quality control of logged “finds” for the cache, and will agree to delete any “find” logs that appear to be bogus, counterfeit, off topic, or not within the stated requirements.

armchair logs are bogus. and at 512 I will bet that at least 450 are armchair logs. This cache is not being maintained properly by the owner.

If the event attendee arrived on scene within the stated time of the event and everyone else had left? then he attended. and he as a right to both the attended log and to be annoyed that the host didn't stick around for late arrivals. My opinion.

I suppose that's true...but I have to say, if you're 6 hours late for an 8 hour event, you're pushing the boundary a little bit of what's considered a late arrival.

Ok, I'm gonna cry foul, it seems that I came to this one unprepared in the respect that those who found it, had tons of help in past logs or lifelines. Since I risked life and limb, almost needing Maui Search and Rescue due to the heavy wave action that day and spending the better part of an hour looking, in the wrong place, wrong description and wrong hints, apparently being over 50 ft off of the real GZ, I am going to claim a pseudo find.

Enough crying...the cache took me to a beautiful bay and bouldering hike among lava rock, quite the adventure. It is all bout the journey in this sport right? The destination was beautiful. Thanks for the looking adventure, next time I'm back I'll really make the find."

Hadn't come across one this good in a while. At least he admits it's a "pseudo find."

I've been reading through this thread and I have a question - seriously! I want to make sure I didn't do anything wrong. As a relatively new geocacher I am still learning the "rules".

I "found" the location of a micro. I could see the top of the container and a pen in a hole in the base of a tree. I reached in to nab the container and out came .........Thousands of BIG BLACK ANTS!!!!!!!! I had ants crawling all over my arm. No way was I going to try to get that container out anymore.

I took a picture of the hole with the ants crawling all around and added it to my comment when I logged in this cache. I logged it as a find without a signature on the log book.

I haven't heard from the owner yet. Should I remove my "find". Or would you more experienced cachers count it as a find?

Many people say you need to sign the log to get a find. However in a case like the one you mention, if it were my cache I would allow the find. You found it, didn't you?

Now if the circumstances changed a bit. Say the cache was hidden high in a tree and retreiving the cache was meant to be part of the challenge, then simply seeing the cache would not be good enough. But that isn't the case here.

I agree with Brian. I have one find where I was unable to sign the log because it was soaked and swollen into the micro container so tight it would not come out. I logged it a find along with the full story of why I didn't sign it and the owner didn't delete it, so it stands.

I agree also. I have a cache at a local city park. A cacher found it and logged it as a find, after telling me that the logbook was completely soaked and they couldnt sign. (3days straight of rain) well I checked and it was indeed completely soaked. Changed logbook didnt delete cachers log

If you look at their record, it seems that they are quick to replace a cache for others. I think we would all do the same if we had experience with the given cache or a nod from the owner. In this case, however, there were no DNFs logged prior to the apparent replacement.

Actually, in the case of this cache, the owner indicates:

"To claim credit for this cache, all you have to do is to tell me, by e-mail, what is at this location.

You don’t have to send a photo or anything else. You don’t even have to go there. If you can find this unique and magnificent object by use of the web. . . well, go for it."

So.....the reviewer approved it... and off we go.

I actually recognized the wording from the cache description quoted in Wuffpack's post. :D I checked to make sure, and Yep, it's the What in the world virtual cache in Maine, which is well known as an armchair cache that gleefully accepts internet finds. Whatevertheysay and I came here to go P but I dropped the package before we could sign the log. I went down to look where it may have landed but had no luck. Bill and Laurie came down and helped me search but that is when we all got wet....literally! The sprinklers went off!!!

Thanks to me the cache is now missing but I'll replace it soon. Sorry about that!

We teamed up with Wetoucheditwhocaresifwelostit and Touched to grab a couple of caches nearby and decided to add this one to our list.

You know how Murphy’s Law states that anything that CAN go wrong WILL go wrong? Murphy must have been a geocacher...

Randy found this one in record-time - what a creative hiding place!! Hubby and I were on our way to GZ when we heard something say, "cache me if you can!"[} So we searched where we thought it ended up - too bad we had to leave Thunder in the car - he probably would’ve sniffed it out in no time! We’d been looking for a few minutes, flashlights in hand, when we heard the distinctive “pfft-pfft-pfft” of lawn sprinklers - time to bail out!!

We’re logging our find, will sign when cache is retrieved! Thanks for taking our caching experiences to a whole new level, spyder1!

Here's an interesting FTF log for a cache hidden in September of 2006:

FTF, 9:30

Well, things have changed here, I guess....

Found this one on my crazy journey through Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosna and Herzegovina. It was not easy to find this village with just a base map in my GPS unit and with no paper map, but I managed it. I found the church, but what a surprise! The whole church, including the old school building where the cache should have been, is enclosed by a big big metal fence. The church itself is totally renewed, repainted and looks beautiful now - which is quite contrasting with the rest of the village and the surroundings. Even the bell is on the ground no more; now it is up in the tower where it should be.

An old local lady told me that the church will be open for public (if there is any "public" around here) in September this year!

Anyway, the village, same as the rest of Bosna around, is a little bit depresive: just one main road, the ruins of houses around, no shops, no people, just those uggly big red signs stating that you must be careful about the land mines that are still in the ground here from the war times... brrrr....

Thanks a lot for showing me this interesting place!

FTF what? Ah! "Where the cache should have been!"
