Found It = Didn't Find It

Apparently, when a cache is in a tree, just spotting it from the ground constitutes a find for some people.

Another great old cache in PA we have never been to. Looked all over, both sides of the wall and all around the area described in the write up. Nothing found. After about an 1hr search we decided to make a few calls to get some help. Finally decided that since we had another container in the truck we would place something here so others would not be disappointed either. We placed it where the description said, if the other container is found, Please feel free to remove our container, or if a local wants to replace with an ammo can, feel free to take our cache out so there is not two caches at the site. Left some University of Delaware stuff.

Another old cache bites the dust. Ammo can replaced by pill bottle throw down. Can't wreck our Jasmer Challenge by DNFing a missing cache! Pill bottle? Ammo can? What's the difference?

2.png Found it 04/05/2014

After crossing the creek at the really neat manmade waterfall and pool, we were in the woods and on our way. We hiked right up to the GZ and had the broken container and wet contents in hand in seconds after arrival. We replaced the old container with a new one and filled it with the goodies that were there. We took the two-cent travelbug and will move it along soon. We're in the area today to place twelve new caches and find 6 or 7 more. This gets a fav point from us and we're going to look into some local history to see what we can find out about this area. Possibly the sight of a furnace at one time? Thanks for bringing us here!!! We LOVED it! TFTC #1098

Guess pill bottles don't last as long as ammo cans? Maybe peanut butter bottles will last longer?

Chutzpah! Give a fav point to your throwdown!

Hint on the page is:

the top secret satellite cache has been vandalized and is not longer there but the area is still worth going to see!!!

Sad. Guess I'll ignore this one on my PA County trip.

In another thread, the topic of logging a find when the cacher really didn't find the cache was mentioned. Someone suggested it would make an interesting topic on its own. I agree.

This thread is for all those smiley-faced logs that admit that the hunters did not really find the cache.

Let's not start a debate, or accuse people of cheating or any of that. No names, no links, just the log.

Here's my first contribution:

icon_smile.gif Found the spot, but not the cache! No film canister that I could find, but I was right on it at 0.0 feet! 1st find on my own!

I don't understand what anyone would get out of doing that. I'm not saying they don't do it I'm sure they do but I don't get why.

The resort is closed but I convinced the guards to "let me have a look, take some pictures and come back in a few minutes". I went straight to ground zero, took some pictures and searched for the cache. About 20 minutes. But I could not find it .

Back home I have access to the spoiler picture: The cache is not there any more

I'll only log a find if I find the cache, but I do not bother opening up any micros smaller than a film canister to sign the logs.

Have you ever had a cache owner delete your found it log on a cache you "found" but couldn't be bothered to sign the log? A CO could rightfully do so and there isn't anything you could do about it.

The large number of people did pose a few problems with groups splitting. I don't think I saw a single cache on the walk except for the hilltop cache It did get confusing with people rushing ahead trying to claim FTFs when the idea was to have them all as joint FTF, either way I've logge d them all as joint FTF as they should have been

Nine caches logged.

Yesterday I found a micro tucked into a whole in a post that was just big enough to hold it. My attempts to use my fingers and small sticks only pushed it deeper into the hole. I didn't have a tool to retrieve it but I did find it and even took a picture of it. However since I was not able to get it out of the post ans sign the log I was unsure if I should log it as a find. I was thinking about writing a found it log and explaining why I didn't sign it with the picture I took. However the location of the cache is so close to my home that I could go back to it with a small wire and and multi tool to dig it out and sign it. I've decided that because it's so close to me I will hold off. Now on the other hand, if this happened to me and it was in a location I am not going to be able to return to I think I would log it as found and post the picture. I guess after that it's up to the CO to decide what to do with it.

Sorry about all the confusion, I did not mean to log my own cache, haha

Will work on weather proofing

Yikes...sounds like someone using an app and not realizing they need to change the log type.

I keep saying that they need to eliminate a "default" log type and force the user to choose which type of log they are writing. It would cut out a huge portion of that nonsense.

This one seemed a possibility to tackle, and as we had brought some specialist equipment with us, we went to investigate. Only cache lid still in place.

Cache damaged - only lid still in place

September 20 2013 - Found it

So back went Mrs XXX but all she could find was the cache lid and attaching part - there was no container and log and did not have a spare one of these type on us to replace it. Will e-mail CO with details of the find to validate claim.

September 20 2013 - Found it

Hoping very much that the CO will allow us a find here but will fully understand if not....Found the same lid minus its main part. Really enjoyed this cache, a shame it's not complete. Fav point for the experience. SL TFTC.

Only the lid is attached, unless this is a decoy. TFTC

December 17 2013 - Found it

Went out and had a look up and down until we spotted something cache like. It turned out to only be the lid for the cache. We have taken several photos to send to the CO who will hopefully agree that this would constitute a find. TFTC

December 17 2013 - Found it

out to try do the 3 fruits series with sam, walked up and down then spotted the lid on a keyring nailed on, no cache or log book but still enjoyed the search and risk! tftl l=lid lol

March 30 2014 - Found it

I had realised from the logs that the previous finder last year had only found the cache lid, Which is all I found again today, I shuffled out along the ledge and checked a few other possibilities but finally came to the conclusion that the bottom half of this has either been dropped or stolen by a passing kayaker etc, Needs replacing really as there is no log to sign, oh well onward and upwards, TFTC

May 29 2014 - Found it

Not sure if the COs are active so maybe this will never get repaired/replaced, since we found, like others, that there is only the lid left. We have a photo of XXX on the ledge in the title, in case anyone out there questions the validity of our found log, having solved the puzzle and accessed the cache location. TFTc

This week I'm in Russia and was looking around for possible caches. Found an interesting log:

"Was at the locations but couldn't find anything :( see pictures attached"

(and he attached a new pic of the spoiler photo showing that there's no cache there), and now comes the best part

"but logged it as it was my only cache in russia :)"

And another guy, same cache:

"Hello, while i was staying at the Airhotel i just had to check this cache.

Unfortunally at both locations there was no box anymore. Becaus the position was correct, compared with the spoiler foto. So I made a picture my self as proof that i was there at the second location.

Maybe the owner shoud hide this box a little bit better to avoid that mugglers find it. There is a lot of trash in the woolds that indicate that the are other people in this area.

So i took the liberty to set this one on "found it" because this is also my first in Russia."

So, I guess everyone is allowed to F an DNF ... as long as it's you' only cache in the country

I found a 5-gallon bucket in a hollow tree with a sheet of bark/wood that perfectly covered the hole. I couldn't open the bucket. I was one of the first finders, and it was a stiff, new bucket. I have girly hands. I put a Slice-O-Matic (clean, in original package) into the hollow tree. There was plenty of room for it and the cache and still everything was wonderfully hidden.

I returned three more times before I finally OPENED THE BUCKET. I wrote notes a couple times on the cache page, but I never logged it as " :)Found It!" until I had opened the bucket and signed the log.

It's "allowed" only because the cache owner is allowing those logs to remain, probably because they've abandoned the hide (possibly because they don't even live in Russia).

I'm probably going to be in San Jose, Costa Rica in the beginning of August and was looked in the area of the hotel where I'll likely be staying. There are three caches fairly close by (easy walking distance). All three are "active" but reading the logs indicates that the containers have been missing since last November (and one hasn't been found since 2011). The next closest cache is about 4km away. There are only about 30 caches with 15 miles of city center. Fortunately, I was in CR a few years ago and found a couple of caches.

Dolphin posted this almost a month ago, but I didn't see it. That is the 2000 placed, 2nd oldest cache in Pennsylvania. Somewhere on the previous pages of this thread, I already posted that throwdown log. Or maybe it was the log of one of the other 2 or 3 cachers in the guilty party. :P I actually DNF'd that cache a few years ago, because I encountered a hostile loose dog at the parking area, and I never got out of the vehicle. I will now never return, to find a throwdown. Because I'm all hardcore like that.

The October 2013 throwdowners posted a picture of the cache. The latest picture of it posted on 5/16/2104 is *NOT* the same container they threw down last fall. It's a different throwdown. Original was an .50 cal ammo can.

EDIT TO ADD: I drove within 5 miles of it in April. Actually, I just forgot about it, not a purposeful anti-throwdown statement or anything. Hey Dolphin. You want to have some fun, and make lots of new friends in the process? Why doesn't one of us drop an NA log on that cache? Just kidding, no one should do that. :P

me and [REDACTED] arrived at this [REDACTED] to do the virtual cache because of all the fav points but it turns out that this was the more memorable of the two caches. we found the description to be very unique and the concept of the cache to be very original. i was so upset that I wasn't going to be able to log the find and give the cache a fav point that I thought "Why don't we just replace the cache. I hear about people doing that all the time and thought this was the perfect opportunity for my first replacing of a cache. thanks for the cache and def adding as a fav.

I've logged one cache where it's debatable as to whether I actually found it. It was one of those fake rock caches (not evident in the description) and I found the outer section but no bottom or log or anything. The bottom had gone missing before based on recent logs and a local cacher with a lot of experience had said in his log that he only found the outer but placed his found it sticker inside the container and logged it as a find, so I wrote my initials on the sticker and mentioned it in my log. I mean, I found the cache, but wasn't sure whether it counted seeing as the rest was missing.

My vote would be that you found it. Replacement log sheets are common. You found a container and signed "the" log. I would have also posted a NM. The container needs to be repaired.

It was a strange situation as the owner said they replaced the inner in a maintenance log from the week before I found it and they're an experienced cacher with a lot of hides. it's PMO only and hidden quite well, so it probably wasn't muggled. i couldn't help but think that maybe it wasn't' the cache, but the likelihood of there being a hollowed out rock at the coordinates was too slim to keep looking elsewhere.

i really can't imagine people logging a find when they haven't found anything at all though. i legitimately thought about it for 5 minutes even though i had found it, technically. i can't understand how people could just lie about it and justify it.

Unless a container is labeled with the GC code or cache name you really don't know if you've found the "real" cache when you've found a cache container.

Some people don't lie about it. Some CO's will allow "a find" on a cache when it's actually missing or a throw-down has been placed. That's between the cache owner and the "finder", and as a finder one should not assume that every cache owner would allow those sorts of "finds".

I've been visiting all known Virtuals in New Jersey, and since I was in the area, I stopped by Old Dude to see if the object was still there. Alas, after the construction, "Old Dude" has been removed. Still, an interesting library. I stopped at the war memorials in the median across from the Library, and checked out the "rain garden" on the back side hoping maybe Old Dude had been moved there.

It's a virtual that was archived in 2004 and the object that was the point of the virtual hasn't been there in 10 years. It was a huge stone with a dinosaur footprint along the sidewalk in front of a library. I'm not sure what he found but it wasn't the virtual.

I explored all around [cache name] (named Flagpole Rock to me), and completely covered the top as well, but found no container, small or micro....... So,... Using Blue permanent marker, I signed the flagpole with [other cacher] and my tag.

:D other cacher Found it!

Claiming this as a find as well. With JUSTAGIT!. Awesome spot and views. It has turned into one of my fave places :)

We DNF'd a cache in a local state park the other day. Maybe we should've brought a marker along and signed the parking lot and claimed a find?

Found this log interesting, on a Webcam

I got to be official pornographer and I waited for the group to assemble. While waiting & watching the webcam, all I could see was fog/cloud as the area was covered and the observation deck was only partially viewable. Even the X was hidden. Shortly before the scheduled time, there were moments of clarity, then finally it seemed to magically clear up. Finally the xyz clan showed up and I could make the grab. They are the multicolored garbed group at the X. Good thing they were thoughtful enough to have appropriate clothing as it was 30 degrees cooler on the observation deck as it was from my comfy spot.

The cacher logging the find does not appear to have been in the webcam photo, yet is logging a 'webcam photo taken" for having stayed at home and downloaded the photo! The cachers in the photo have not logged a 'webcam photo taken.'

You've got it all wrong. You find the road sign with the name of the road the power trail is on, and sign the sign. You are then able to log a find on all present and future caches on that road.

I needed a cache today to keep my 307 day streak going but we were out way too late last night and I'm too hung over to get out of this house, I am loggining this cache now and promise to find it in the next day or two.

7.png This cache has been out of service for a few months. People keep looking for it and logging the rope.

2.png Checked on this cache several times and only the rope remains. Still nothing attached :( going to give up and log this one since I need a 4/4 on my D/T matrix. Oh well

This was posted on one of our Multi caches last month. So they found the clue container but didn't find the container with the log in it. How can they mark it found? Still contemplating deleting the log.

Probably not - but perhaps they touched it and left DNS traces as proof of their visit. That counts, right?

A cache with 19 favorite points, with many of the legitimate finders praising the container, gets this "found it" log from a newbie phone-cacher:

A QR sticker on the back of the sign? Lame.

The cache owner should have deleted the log, but only wrote a note:

I agree those stickers are very lame. But if that was all you found , you didn't find the real cache container.
