Team Bramble Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 Hi everyone I've just got my first GPS and am wanting to download multiple waypoints from geocaching.com so that I can put them all on my gps at once. I have downloaded easygps for this purpose, but still have to get the .loc files one at a time. Any suggestions? Thanks Kat Quote
thcri Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 If your searching by zip code or whatever you should have a full page of waypoints. At the bottom of the page you should be able to click on "Check All" and then do your download and you will get that full page. Works for me all the time. murph Quote
+beejay&esskay Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 You can also combine multiple files with EasyGPS by opening more than 1 and setting the display to "tile". Then select and drag from one file to another. Quote
Team Bramble Posted March 4, 2004 Author Posted March 4, 2004 Thanks, it worked! Now is there any way to rename them so that I don't just get codes? Or is that what normal geocachers run off? Kat Quote

Kat You may want to just leave them as they are. That way when you find them and change the icon to found it will be easier to log them on the home page. Just my opinion as you can do what ever you want. murph Quote

Kat Personally, I change the names of mine. With EasyGPS open, highlight the cache you want to rename. Right click on it and select "edit waypoint". Delete the GCH435436 stuff and rename it a short, memorable name. Quote

Delete the GCH435436 stuff and rename it a short, memorable name. You also can change the icon that is saved in the GPS unit. I use the etrex Lengend and change the icon to a "Geocache" icon. When I find the cache, I then change the icon to "Geocache found". Good luck and blesses Quote
+katguy Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 There are a host of software utilities that can help you with this process. GSAK, spinner, gpsbabel,... You can find out about these and more in the GPS Units and Software forum. Enjoy! Quote
+Cherokeecacher Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 As mentioned above, I would check outGSAK. Quote
+ThePropers Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 (edited) I was wondering this very same thing. I just got my cable for my basic yellow eTrex and have transferred a few dozen waypoints on it (all with the GC**** name.) If I change the icon when I find one, how do I pull up only those ones I've found? Is there a way to do this? I can just picture me coming back home and having to sort through 300 waypoints trying to find the ones I just did. I guess when I find one, I could change the name from "GC****" to "ZZ****" or something so they'd be easier to go through. Or maybe I should just go wireless so I can mark them on my PDA. EDIT: Ok, I guess I didn't play with it enough...if I download them back off my GPS, I get the icons. Don't mind me... Edited March 5, 2004 by ThePropers Quote
+in2art Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 I can't seem to download waypoints at all. Not even one at a time. The web site sends me to the information page instead of the download page. It worked for Benchmarks once, but I want to download the caches. Any ideas? Quote
SBPhishy Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 This has been a strange and somewhat common problem. No one seems to know the reason for it yet. If you yell loud enough, Jeremy will come to the rescue. He seems to be able to fix it instantly. Besides trying to find him, I would log off the site, and then log back on. That seems to work sometimes. Quote
+in2art Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 I found the fix. !!! First, you must click on the link that says that you have log in, or just log in before. Second, you must read and click that you have read the licence agreement. Third, Then log back out and close your browser. Now... open your browser and log back into the web site. it will allow you to down load any waypoints you want. It has to do with reading the license agreement and logging in and out. After that it seems to work fine. Hope this all make sense and helps. Quote
+Fritz_Monroe Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 I didn't know about changing information with EasyGPS. I'll have to give that a try. The name thing in the Etrex is one of the big reasons I didn't buy a Garmin. I went with the Magellan SporTrak Map and it shows you the GC# and actual name when selecting it out of the database. Wish I would have seen this thread sooner, I had run into the can't download waypoints problem. I clicked all over until I noticed that I wasn't logged in. Logged in and it worked fine. One thing to keep in mind. If your GPSr says that it can store 500 waypoints. It can, but the more that are in there, the longer a search will take. And if you are at the maximum, any notes you have in there could be overwritten. Keep the local caches in there and if you are going after a batch, put them in. I always delete the waypoint once I make the find. F_M Quote
