Gpx2html Problem

Recommended Posts

I am converting over to GPS file format. When I run GPX2HTML, all the index sorts seem to work OK for all, say 100 caches in the query, except the Distance from Origin. It only returns 5 to 8 caches of less than 10 miles. Anyone have this problem? How have you fixed it or what do you suspect is my problem? The distance from origin is the most valuable to me. Thanks much.

Greetings RC. I've used GPX2HTML right from it's beginnings and do not recall ever hearing of that problem. The only thing I can suggest is to make sure your "reflocation" text file is reading correctly and that it is in the same folder as the gpx2html app. file.

Here is mine for you to compare.

# Enter reference locations

# Name, Lat, Long

From Home, N 43 xx.xxx, W 79 xx.xxx

From Work, N 43 xx.xxx, W 79 xx.xxx

Cheers, Olar

Hi Olar,

Thanks for the reply. I suspected my reflocation format but it seems to be OK. Here it is:

# Enter reference locations

# Name, Lat, Long

#Home, N 40 03.851, W 83 01.44

#Lexington NC, 35.82250, -80.28233

#Livingston TX, 30.71256, -94.95321

Lincolnton GA, 33.84596, -82.40732

I think the format I used is OK. Can you tell me if there is a problem here?

Thanks again

Hi guys,

I'm not sure what platform you are using or what your needs are but if you are looking to convert gpx files into html the best thing going would be GSAK. If you are having the gpx files sent to you then load them into the program, sort as needed then export to HTML. A friend of mine using an older PDA which won't support GPXSonar uses that method and it's great. Fortunatly I have a new PPC and with GSAK and GPXSonar there is nothing better.

Just a thought. I may be way off knowledge base here for what you are trying to do....

RC I see what your problem may be. Remove the pound (#) sign from lines 3, 4 and 5. I believe # is used only when you want the program to ignore that particular line.

Hope it works, Olar

Olar - Back again - The only sort I want is on the last line: Lincolnton GA which is where I currently am. The others I have tried previously, with the same result, and I just want to keep them in my list for future use.

Rosco - I am using MS XP and my GPS is a Garmin EMap. My PDA is a Palm Tungsten E. I will take a look at GSAK although I would prefer to not start working with another program since I am just now learning GPX2HTML (unless there are obvious advantages - such as doing the distance sort that I can't yet get to work on GPX2HTML).

Please let me know if you have other ideas. And thanks much.

Royal Coachman,

I use XP also with a Magellan and PDA using Windows CE.

GSAK has filters (very easy to use) that will let you sort, filter, save, remove, note and so many more things I can't print them from memory. It will let you sort by distance from anyplace to anyplace and also let you set center coordinates from one place to sort from there. Clyde the author of GSAK has put tons of time into this FREE program and doesn't seem to have a stop button on his keyboard. He has put in more features from requests than probably any other software program known to man. The link to the program is below this post and you might want to give it a try. There has been a lot of discussion about the program and the help guide is quite extensive. I don't like using new stuff either but a program comes along sometimes that replaces and enhances what you are already using.

Keep us informed.

I have been using Gpx2html for a couple of months and it links all caches within 10 miles of each reference point ... that is just the way it works ... if there is only one cache within 10 miles, then it only lists the one. So I use a number of different reference points, so that I can cover the entire area within about 50 miles of home. GPXSpinner will allow you to set the reference distance, but I found that processing is MUCH slower than with Gpx2html.

This is my ref file for the Atlanta area.

Has something changed? I'm using version 1.3 (3/6/2003) and my reflocations sort has the same number of caches as the main index. My main gpx2html file has over 1300 caches in it with distances up to almost 300 miles.

Charlie P - My brother uses GPX2HTML and it sorts all files in the query by distance from the reflocation i.e. up to 500 covering 100's of miles. Olar's post confirms that he can also do this. Perhaps you have the same problem that I have and we could both benefit by a solution?!?!

Rosco - We are traveling in a motorhome and my only connection is with my cell phone is at 14.4 which is sloooooow. Remember those days? Thus I can't download large files like GSAK even though I would like to. Also I am trying to get this solved using my free weekend minutes :-)

Olar - I will send you the files. Thanks for offering.

AND thanks to all for trying to help me with this issue.

PROBLEM SOLVED

I just heard from Fizzymagic, the author of GPX2HTML, who I had sent an email to. Here is an excerpt from his reply (Thanks, Fizzymagic!)>

Oops. I forgot to document this particular change. It's very easy to

fix. I made the default for each reference location to truncate at 10

miles. That's because people were having trouble with too many caches in the pages.

To change the maximum distance for each reference location, just add the maximum distance to the end of the line, in miles. Thus:

San Jose, 37.3323667, -121.9277667, 100.

Will go out 100 miles from that location.
