+ChileHead
This has probably been done before, but has anybody else made a cache inside of a birdhouse? I nailed a birdhouse in the woods near a stream, just off a main path so it didn't look too out of place. On the inside I glued a black piece of wood over the bird hole so a bird wouldn't make the cache his home. Inside the birdhouse was the actual cache. People seemed to like it. Quote Link to comment
+Ed Rad
Yes...I have been to at least 3 different birdhouse caches here in Illinois. They are a little different but if the GPS leads me near a birdhouse , it's the first place I look! Quote Link to comment
+BeachBuddies
Yes, there's a good one by TeacherMatt in VA. I don't think any experienced geocacher would take too long to figure it out, but I'm sure it works well as an anit-muggle techinique. His cache is in a small, very open park. I'm sure hundreds of muggles have walked right by it and never thought twice. Quote Link to comment

+Mastifflover
One of the first caches that we did was hid this way. I looked right at the birdhouse and thought nothing of it and started to walk away. My wife "TinyDiny" found the trick right away. Quote Link to comment
+Colorado Cacher
I was walking through this park and found a real nice birdhouse that was long off of its mount and thought this would make a really cool geocaching coordinates container. So I go to the local hobby shop and buy some wood eggs, print the coordinates onto them with a permanent black marker and then spray paint them with clear lacquer. I attach them to the inside of the house with steel fishing line leaders and eyehooks, then close up the hole with a small round circle of sheetmetal that is glued into place over the entry hole, from the inside. Then I mount one of those "s" type screendoor latch hooks to keep the door shut on it to the bottom of the door and go out and mount it onto a tree in the forest. Only two people have found "Quest 4 :::--->>> Cochise" cache so far. The final coordinates are a giant *$)&@(%)(#%&)*%&)*(%, that holds a large bucket full of mega goodies. P.S.-Lucky for me the local Goodwill store also has a good selection of birdhouses as well, lol. Edited February 27, 2004 by KEYPERSN Quote Link to comment

+Brian - Team A.I.
The Feed House was certainly a favorite cache find of mine. I even adopted an aspect of the hide method in one of my current caches. Quote Link to comment
+Hard Oiler
Bill & Gary's Excellent Adventure II has been archived so you can now see the pictures of the infamous #4 birdhouse here. Top of my list of favorite caches and can't wait until Adventure III. Quote Link to comment
+jillian
There's one hidden in Lincoln Nebraska too- I was just at it yesterday. I saw the bird house right away and the kid was like "that's it"... I was poking around 10 feet away before I broke down and decided to go disturb some poor bird to quiet the kid... oops. +wimseyguy
Don't have any around here yet but the coords to a stage of a multi are written on one. Quote Link to comment
+The Jester
There's at least one in Western Washington. It was so well done - straw sticking out the 'hole' and all - that I looked at it twice (then searched every bush for 50' around) before I saw the gc.com logo faintly printed on the bottom. More coming to South Florida soon - we just finished another one this weekend and won auctions on 8 more. Watch for droppings Cache we own Quote Link to comment

+greengecko
I made a cedar bluebird house with false bottom and a hidden compartment in the bottom one fourth. I placed a hinged flip up door on the side and used magnetic cabinet door latches it hold it closed. A 3x3x2 Tupperware container fits the hidden compartment. The top part is a fully functional birdhouse. Just to make it identifiable I used a wood burning tool to put a small GeoCache logo on the door. The hints are “Someone to Watch Over Me” and the word "Bottom" in the cache name. Felton Creek Bottom The cache is placed along the Cardinal Greenway, an abandoned C&O railway. +Imajika
There are 4 that I know of in the Denver, CO area. They were all placed by the same family. They're a great anti-muggle technique! Quote Link to comment
+E = Mc2
We've got one in Elizabethtown ,KY GCH40Z that's neat. Hider used a double birdhouse (available at Michael's craft store) and the top part is still usable for birds... Quote Link to comment
runner_one
There are at least 2 birdhouse caches within 5 miles of my home both owned by the same placer. Can't tell you whitch because that would give them away, suffice to say one is in a VERY public and open place in plain view. Quote Link to comment
+Sparky-Watts
I just found one Saturday...really had me stumped till I suddenly had that "Forehead Slap" moment! Quote Link to comment
+Happy Bubbles
I found a cache a few weeks ago that had a miniature birdhouse as the container. I knew what I was looking for from the hints. The only problem was the actual birdhouse in a tree nearby. It's nice and visible, so of course cachers are going to go straight to it and disturb the birds inside. If you hide your own birdhouse cache, you might want to make sure that there aren't any feathery things nearby that would object to your changes to the neighborhood. Quote Link to comment
Trail Prowlers
There's at least one in eastern Massachusetts as well. Quote Link to comment

+Cache Viking
I am so glad I read this thread. I could totally see myself getting stumped by one of these and logging a DNF. Quote Link to comment
+GeoSharks
I placed a cache in a nesting box that opened from the side. Birds couldn't get into it. The hole wasn't cut into the box. Very easy to make. Here is a link for directions: http://audubon.wku.edu/daviess/bluebirdnestbox-agfc.pdf Quote Link to comment
+themagician
Theres an old broken, rotten birdhouse laying on the ground in NJ and of course there is a cache in side. Where is it? can't tell you Its a secret. As usual there was a path leading right to it and as usual I didn't find the path till after I found the cache. Quote Link to comment
+Dan-oh
OK, not a birdhouse but its close. I have one of these on the work bench awaiting proper "modification". It might even be double wall so it appears to have seed it in. Could be good! Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I found a cache in a bird. It was hidden in one of those large plastic owls that are used to scare pigeons away. It was in a tree and there was a slit down the back of the bird and a small cache container was inside. Quote Link to comment
+bigeddy
OK, not a birdhouse but its close. I have one of these on the work bench awaiting proper "modification". It might even be double wall so it appears to have seed it in. Could be good! I've seen this type of container used once. All I could think of was how the hungry birds must get terribly frustrated! The feeder holds quite a lot of cache stuff and must be lowered on a pulley to open. I've done 2 birdhouse caches in Central Oregon. Quote Link to comment
+Colorado Cacher
There was a path to the birdhouse? Now I know how the birds get to those!!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
+SixDogTeam
I have a cache that's a micro in the pipe that holds up a birdhouse in the middle of a cemetery. There's a nest in it, too. Quote Link to comment
+RebelTJ
I am going to resurrect this topic because I have an idea for an evil birdbox that involves a trap door and a hidden latch release... It involves a car hood latch, a good length of bicycle brake cable, some PVC pipe, and an old tricycle... Think it will "fly?" Quote Link to comment
+Chokecherry
I totally loved the birdhouse caches I found recently. I guess one had some problems as they had to note that you didn't need to deconstruct the birdhouse to get to it (hidden door). If you do a hidden latch be prepared for someone (probably someone like me who just doesn't "get it") to unscrew the birdhouse to get to the cache. Quote Link to comment
+Wadcutter
I am going to resurrect this topic because I have an idea for an evil birdbox that involves a trap door and a hidden latch release... It involves a car hood latch, a good length of bicycle brake cable, some PVC pipe, and an old tricycle... Think it will "fly?" Found a birdhouse cache once that had a hidden compartment under it. It appeared to be a normal birdhouse. Inside was a divider floor which separated the real birdhouse above with the cache compartment below. To access the hidden compartment you removed 2 long nails in the bottom and the bottom dropped out revealing the hidden cache. The nail holes were just a bit oversized for the nails so the nails could be removed by fingers. Quote Link to comment

+Applegrrl3
My son, RebelGTP built a birdhouse in Cub Scouts many years ago. I just recently found it, and planned on hanging it at my home for the birds. I think he and I will have to make a cache out of it, and maybe still hang it at my home, just not for the birds. +Coldgears
I found exactly one like this. But it was destroyed basically, it was lieing on the ground because it fell of the tree. Quote Link to comment
Northwoods Tom
I really enjoy this type of cache. The first time you find one at least for me, just cracks you up. Search, search, search, and there it is the whole time. Have found at least four and each one has been great. One way out in a forest really had me laughing. Another time, one was used as a dummy cache with the real cache right next to it. Quote Link to comment

knowschad
Ive found 2 up here in Minnesota There used to be one around here that had an electronic bird song play when you opened it. +Semper Questio
Several of them down here in Central Texas. Some fake bird feeders also, complete with seed showing behind clear plexiglass and fake bird poop on the perches. Quote Link to comment
+Chief301
I only have 25 finds but two of them have been fake birdhouses...well, not exactly, one of them was a fake birdhouse and the other was a fake wood duck box (see example below)... ...which are a pretty common sight around here. In this case, the top where the hole is actually was a functional birdhouse and the bottom part opened to reveal the cache. Quote Link to comment
+Viajero Perdido
I lifted the lid on one of those, and saw a bird staring back at me. Oops sorry! The cache was somewhere else nearby. Quote Link to comment
Trader Rick & Rosie
We don't like thee, as they teach geocachers to tear apart birdhouses that may have been put up by the caretakers of the land...Really really bad bad idea. Quote Link to comment
+printmaster1952
I found one In Nebraska that I liked and made one similar. A bird can not get into this and the name of the cache is "Not For THe Birds". You have to find the secret to get inside to get the cache container. Also found one not to long ago about 15 miles from home here. These 2 that I have seen a bird can not get into and there is no question as to that it is a cache. Quote Link to comment
+Harry Dolphin
Then the question arises: How many birdhouse caches have been hidden without driving a nail into the tree? One, of the five or six that I've found. And it was on a spike that a hunter drove into the tree. Quote Link to comment
+Snowman257
Chile, Howieandjan have one not to far from you on the Greenway outside of Geneseo. Quote Link to comment
