Travel Bug Rescue Mission

A few weeks ago, this thread reminded me of a local cache that I found a few years ago. I dug up the cache page to see if it was still active and discovered that it had been archived almost a year ago. This wasn't a huge surprise, in fact I wonder why it took so long. The surprise was that there was still a bug logged into the cache.

A few days ago, I had some time and made the trip to the cache location. I donned my boots, grabbed a flashlight and started my subterranean journey. While I suspected that the cache was still in place, I didn't really expect it to be. It was. The bug was still safe and sound. I have now grabbed it and will rerelease it into the world soon.

I wonder how many bugs are still in forgotten, archived caches?

This got me curious, as I have an interest in avoiding geo-litter and an especially strong interest in doing what I can to help cachers who want to rescue abandoned caches and stranded travel bugs. So, I spent my lunch hour and afternoon break today scanning through the cache database for Pennsylvania. My findings:

There are 2,619 total caches in Pennsylvania.

There are 1,960 caches in Pennsylvania that have not been archived.

There are 659 caches in Pennsylvania that have been archived.

There are 14 archived caches in Pennsylvania that have travel bugs on the cache page.

I would have expected a higher number, but of course I cannot easily tell how many bugs have been moved to the travel bug graveyard or to "limbo" after going missing in an archived cache.

As for these 14 archived caches:

5 are confirmed plundered, either by the owner or a prior finder.

3 were removed by the owner with intentions to replace elsewhere, but it never happened. (Grrrrr..... )

2 are probably plundered, but not definitively confirmed.

2 are of unknown status and there is hope for the missing bug.

1 was removed by the PA DCNR because the owner failed to get a permit.

1 saw a recent rescue attempt by the bug's owner. The cache is there but the bug is not.

Those of you in other states might be able to persuade your local volunteer cache reviewer to search through the records like I just did, since reviewers can see the archived caches in our search results lists. It's a marvelous time waster!

After all, we all know the volunteer reviewers have nothing else to do.:mad::mad:

Uh, Mr. Keystone, sir. I think that's you!

You do cover Ohio, don't you?

Given the low numbers, any chance of somehow generating a "archived with TB" gpx file for anyone to grab off a web page? Could Jeremy create a one-shot for this one?

You know. I really wouldn't mind being able to search archived caches. That would be a nice PQ feature.

My local reviewer/approver Hemlock has started an "Abandoned Caches in Northern California" (waypoint GCGY4A) file that one can download and retrieve archived caches in the wild.

It's been fun searching for caches to remove them as geo-litter...kinda like Indiana Jones searching for lost caches.

Have yet to find a TB in an old archived cache (or heard of one being fond).

Sadly, the page is woefully outta date, and amusingly, the cache page of caches needing retrieved was archived from under the approver....

Happy caching!!

Attention TPTB, maybe we could pursuade local cache groups to add this to CITO day? As El Hefe of the Nebraskache group, I would be happy to add this sort of list data crunching for Nebraska caches to one of our meetings. It would give us some more local visability and show that we are policing ourselves.
