Garmin Pulling Out Front!

Insp Gadget

Recommended Posts

I have supported Garmin for a long time but maybe, just maybe it's time to look at something else, just maybe.

What exactly would you look at that can close in choices? I've played with them all, and thee's nothing else I want to even consider!

Ya know I did go out and look at a few Magellans. And I will wait. Magellan just doesn't tickle my fance for some reason. I am sure they are good and there is nothing wrong with them I just didn't like em I guess.

No one has really been talking about price. Price played a big factor in me getting a Meridian. For the price of 200 (it came out to a bit cheaper for me since I bought the traveller pack) you get so much more with a Meridian Gold, than you do with a Garmin. Comparing a Meridian to a Legend, the answer is pretty clear (at least I think so). I like the new Garmin's a lot, but 400-500 is really expensive. The Vista is around 200-300, and compared to a Platinum, I think you get more with the platinum. The Garmin V's are pretty expensive also.

I think it's mostly a matter of preference. Ford vs. Chevy. PC vs. Mac. Coke vs Pepsi.

I happen to like Chevy, PC, & Coke... and Magellan. I've used Magellan for a LONG time. 10+ years. Mostly because I didn't have my own GPSr, and all the ones I borrowed were Magellans. I got used to how Magellan programs things, used to how they set up screens & buttons. I can easily find what I want on every Magellan I've used. It prompted me to buy a MeriPlat.

I have had the chance to recently use a Garmin. It was before I bought my own GPSr. I had a hard time using it, simply because I'm not used to how Garmin programs things. I had a harder time finding a Geocache, but I believe it was because of the settings in the Garmin, and I couldn't figure out how to change any of them. Oh, I had a hard time dealing with the buttons. I like them down on the bottom.

Features are nice, but it boils down to functionality. It's like my cell phone and my Mom's cell phone. I have a cheap Nokia, she has an expensive Motorola. I like Motorolas better, but I can make and recieve calls just as easy as she can. Hers has a lot of cool bells & whistles (like voice-activated dialing), but when you look at what's important, the ability to make and recieve a call, they aren't much different.

That's how I view GPSr's. Is it accurate enough to find what you're looking for? Then really, who cares if it's Magellan or Garmin (or Cobra, or Ed's discount GPS)? Find something accurate, with the bells & whistles you like & an interface you can use.

I agree, Those Plats and Golds are HUGE <_<

Until they have removable memory, I don't think they can truely be thought of as pulling out ahead. It's certainly one place where they are still lacking.

My Garmin iQue has a 512 MB removable card. <_<

For navigation, I haven't seen anything better. I will still keep my Etrex Legend as the iQue is delicate. It isn't waterproof and it really isn't ideal for Geocaching IMHO.

The 512 MB card was only $129. Prices keep coming down.

For me it is still simple.

I have used nothing but Garmin. Having never had an SD card, I guess I don't miss it. I have always seemed to be able to use whatever Garmin GPSr I had to my satisfaction.

Yes, I am looking at my 4th upgrade in 3 years. Who has not looked at a new one?

OTOH, Magellan is owned by Thales. Thales is French. I am a retired army veteran who knows and remembers history. Currently my son is also serving. Of the many countries serving with him, France is conspicuously absent.

I will not give a penny - SD card or not - to a country with a stripe up their back the color of a basic E-trex. Until Iraq, the only thing we ever asked of them was a place to bury our dead. And why did they die in France? Nuf said.

My opinion, but I put my money (and my life) where my mouth is!

Garmin RULES! <_<

Hey, I wanna see what I'm paying for! <_<

Chevy, Coke, PC, Magellan, Palm (because I've never used a PPC)

As for the French thing, almost everything I own is made in China, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, etc. etc. etc. Because of that, I don't really feel like being a hypocrit (sp?) by only buying American.

Chevrolet, (General Motors, anyway) Coca-Cola, Palm Tungstens, and Magellan.

I also like the Ford Taurus (drives nicely) Diet Pepsi, Dagg's PPC (Very cool), and I own two different Garmins.

And I refuse to get into the debate about Thales being French. They aren't. Get over it. We didn't go to war with you either, but supported you (and still do) in the Gulf. If Thales is the enemy, then so am I and my countrymen.

Speak for yourself. I fully agree with what DW said and had I known that Thales was french, I would have never bought one.....

OH - really???

Here is the proof!

Thales plays a bigger role in your everyday life than you may ever have imagined…

Established in France more than a century ago, Thales is a global electronics company serving Aerospace, Defence, and Information Technology markets worldwide.

With operations in more than 30 countries and 65,000 employees, the Thales Group generated 11.1 billion euros in revenues in 2002.

And HERE is the reference. Is the company profile on the internet proof enough? Well, maybe not, I guess I could have just written a multi-page web site as a hoax. Whew, that was a long night.

Dig enough, you will find the link to Magellan.

EDIT: I decided to do it for you. HERE

I rest my case. <_<

Most of the countries you listed DID lend support in one way or another. My son has served with Azerjibani and Polish troops, and has recently had some contact with Japanese troops. He says the Azerjibani troops are real fighters, good to be with. The polish are poorly equipped, but superbly trained and led.

It doesn't even matter. I don't care at all where things are made. I would rather buy something from France, even though SOME of them hate us, etc etc. then buy something that was made in a sweatshop by a bunch of little starving kids. I will NEVER join the military, and I will never be proud of my kids if they ever join. I love living in California, but I will never die for my country, and I will never expect any of my family to die for this country either, because there seem to always be enough people who want to. To get into this further, I think Bush is a moron. So if you don't want to buy Magellan, then don't. None of this matters, especially on these forums. I feel bad for our troops, etc. etc. But I am glad I'm not over there.

Do you drive a Ford? Cause I drive a Honda.

Thank goodness this is not a universal opinion because if it were Magellan would be owned by a German company and you would be British.

P.S. I do drive a Ford (just like Toby Keith).

RANT TRUNUCATED

Yes, although he seems hopeless, I will touch it. But don't expect much...

Just so long as you know that the very fact you can have this attitued is because "there seem to always be enough people" who did the tough jobs for you, and paid in their blood, then I am fine with it. Those who can - DO. For those who can't, there is Kalifornia. Don't worry, those who can will continue to carry you, and protect you, and your family, dispite your attitude. This is just the way they are. And thank God there ARE enough of them. I was proud to have been one once, as were/are many in here.

I bet you complain about all the jobs lost in the country. Shop at wal-mart do you?

Next time the french are in trouble they can ask the Germans for help. The Germans know the way to Paris!

BTW.... JEEP. 1976 AM-General JEEP. The fore-runner of the AM-General H-1 hummer. I call it a H-1/2.

Of course thank God that there are enough of them. If there weren't I would probably get dragged into it.

I don't complain at all! I understand people who complain about illegals and all this taking jobs, and people not buying american and all this, but I am all for a nice wonderful utopian world (that will never exist) where race doesnt matter all all. I have been to wal-mart, and they have some decent stuff. But, i dont shop there on a regular basis.

I dont mean to be a jerk, but it just seems that some people are "patriots" and get a little carried away, by saying, the French suck, and so on. I have been to France, and I wasnt too impressed, but you can't group the people into one group, and say they are a bunch of cowards.

I don't mind the outcome of the "war" but, I think there were some less than honorable reasons for its happening.

Overall, of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and thats fine, but when you start bashing on the French for no reason, other than what they may have done in the past, it's not really a nice thing to do.

And this is not coming from some stupid redneck. I attend a University, get good grades, etc. etc.

I don't mean to start anything, but you dont have to be mean to the French. At least they gave us some good cheese.

So, while this is not an apology, I don't want any hard feelings. It just seems that some conservative type people tend to climb up on the soap box, and tell other people how bad they are for doing this and that.

First, no. No hard feelings. If you think it over, you might even begin to see our side.

Of course thank God that there are enough of them.  If there weren't I would probably get dragged into it.

Yep... like on your doorstep. People need to understand that this war was not of our choosing. They came looking for us! And it wasn't the first time either. In 20+ years of service, I have seen the dark belly of terrorism. I was 2 blocks away from USAFE HQ when they blew it up. I spent 7 yerars in Europe, not just vacations. I insoected my car with a flashlight and mirror every time I approached it. The problem is most Americans have been brought up in such a protected and sheltered life they don't know what is outside our borders.

You see, if we are fighting the war in their backyard, we don't have to fight it in our backyard. But fight it we must. They don't want to hold our hands and sing kumbya... they want to destroy us.

I dont mean to be a jerk, but it just seems that some people are "patriots" and get a little carried away, by saying, the French suck, and so on.  I have been to France, and I wasnt too impressed, but you can't group the people into one group, and say they are a bunch of cowards.

Spend 7 years in that part of the world and form an opinion. Shortly after France withdrew from NATO, the french border became a secondary zone on our radar scopes. Many of the common folks there are nice, that is true. But many are not. And I don't need to comment on the policy of their government and our position with them. However, Thales pays a considerable amount to the french govt in taxes and fees. Not one penny of mine though!

I don't mind the outcome of the "war" but, I think there were some less than honorable reasons for its happening.

Yep... less than honorable. Let's see now.

Oct 1983 - Beirut, Lebanon Marine Barracks - 243 killed.

Dec 1988 - Lockerbee Scotland Pan-Am flt 103 - 244 killed.

Feb 1993 - NYC, NY. World Trade Center - I - 6 killed (we were lucky)

Jun 1996 - Khobar Towers, Saudi Arabia - 19 killed. (I lived there in 91)

Aug 1998 - US Embasies Kenya/Tanzania - 224 killed.

Oct 2000 - USS Cole, Aden, Yemen - 17 killed.

Sept 11th 2000 - NYC, NY. World Trade Center -II. Plus

Pentagon, Washington DC. Plus

United Airlines flt 93, Central PA - 3000+

How many more attacks will it take before striking back will be honorable? Sears Tower in Chicago? All of LA? Your family?

My opinion, it is a dishonor to ALLOW it to happen. And it you are not ready to pick up a rifle and fight it in your backyard, at least appreciate the government and soldiers that are willing to keep it out of your backyard. And DO NOT support the nations who make that job more difficult than it needs to be.

And this is not coming from some stupid redneck.  I attend a University, get good grades, etc. etc.

Never said it any other way. In fact, I specifically stated that you had that right. It was paid for by the blood of those who DO think it is important.

I don't mean to start anything, but you dont have to be mean to the French.  At least they gave us some good cheese.

Again, in simple terms, my enemy's friends are also my enemy. The french are making the job more difficult, and making it take longer too I might add. If this makes trouble for the french people, sorry... but they CAN fix it. All it takes is a more cooperative government that isn't in the pocket of the terrorists. In the long run, it is in their best interest to be rid of terrorists too.

No hard feelings at all. I hope some day you get a professor who will teach both sides of the story, not just the socialist liberal side.

Have a great weekend caching.... I will be teaching electronics to kids tonight, hiking Sat, and working on my H-1/2 Sun. Maybe ride my dog (see avatar) in the desert!
