oscar2
Does anyone know how to copy mapsource cds to a harddrive to avoid putting a disk in everytime I use it? The directions say to perform a full install, but that is not an option when installing, and when copying the entire disk to harddrive the program still won't recognize it. Any suggestions? Vlad
you ran "setup" from the hard drive after copying the disk there and not "setup" from the cd itself correct? some software does require that you have the disk in the cdrom in order to work - which software product do you have that is causing this problem? +RGS
When I installed Mapsource Metroguide(4.3) to my laptop, I elected to install all the areas (except Alaska and Hawaii), and everything got copied to the HD. It doesn't prompt me for the CD whether I want NY, CA, or anywhere in between. Rich Quote Link to comment
oscar2
Sorry, I should have mentioned which program I had. I have the US topo with 3 cds, but the installion program is only on the first cd and it won't let me copy that on to my harddrive, but the other two still request the cd even after copying them. +Blind Avocado
I believe when installing, you select the regions you want installed, or you can select "All" to select all the regions to do a complete install. Then it should install the maps you selected. After that, you should not need the CD. If you really want to copy the CD onto your HD and run it from there, then you will need to make a "disk image", and install software that creates a virtual CDROM drive that can read the image. A great program for this is Alcohol 120% Quote Link to comment
+Blind Avocado
Sorry I did not see your post about having TOPO. For that the whole CD does not install. If you already have a Mapsource product installed, TOPO will not full install. It will integrate itself into the already installed mapsource. After that it you will need to put in the CD every time you want to use it. It works this way even on a full install. So if you don't want to have to keep putting in the CD you can use the Alcohol 120% solution. Quote Link to comment
Swagger
This should get you the behaviour you're looking for. I haven't done this with Topo, but I've done it with MetroGuide. Copy each CD into it's own directory on your hard disk, i.e.: C:\garmin\cd1 C:\garmin\cd2 C:\garmin\cd3 Install the product as normal. (skip this if you've already installed it) Click Start, then Run. Type regedit and click OK. Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive, then SOFTWARE, then Garmin, then MapSource. Under the Products key, you should find some keys with numbers for names. Look around in there. You should be looking for a value titled Loc, which will be the location of the data file for that product. MetroGuide uses D:\MGWest and D:\MGEast (D: represents your CD drive). Double click that value and change it to the appropriate directory on your hard drive, i.e. C:\garmin\cd1\MGWest in this example. CitySelect points directly to the .img file - basically, you need to look at any value that's pointing to a specific file or directory on your CD drive and change it to reflect the new location. You'll probably need to do that three times, once for each CD. If I had Topo, I could give you exact instructions but you should be able to figure it out. That's it! Close the Registry Editor and start up MapSource! Quote Link to comment

DO NOT COPY THE LINES - JUST THE TEXT BETWEEN THEM. Paste the text into a new text file using the Windows NOTEPAD program Save it as any filename you want, but change the file extension to .REG Example: FILENAME.REG Locate the file, and double-click on it ________________________________________________________ Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products] "InstallDir"="C:\\Garmin" "Folder"="MapSource" "SourceDir"="D:" "Language"="ENGLISH" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\6] "Bmap"="C:\\Garmin\\Topo100USE.img" "Tdb"="C:\\Garmin\\Topo100USE.tdb" "Loc"="C:\\Garmin\\East" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\7] "Bmap"="C:\\Garmin\\Topo100USW.img" "Tdb"="C:\\Garmin\\Topo100USW.tdb" "Loc"="C:\\Garmin\\West" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\8] "Bmap"="C:\\Garmin\\Topo100Hawaii.img" "Tdb"="C:\\Garmin\\Topo100Hawaii.tdb" "Loc"="C:\\Garmin\\Hawaii" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\9] "Bmap"="C:\\Garmin\\Topo100Alaska.img" "Tdb"="C:\\Garmin\\Topo100Alaska.tdb" "Loc"="C:\\Garmin\\Alaska" _________________________________________________________ Edited February 14, 2004 by Neo_Geo Quote Link to comment

My Topo set let me copy the CD to the hard drive. I Made a folder and explored the CD and then copied to the folder the 3 cd Topo set. I then ran setup in the first cd I copied to folder. Simple,no regristry keys to work. I have done this numours times on my Laptops and destops. MetroGuide installed fine. Maybe the newer Topo's won't let you copy to hard drive, but I doubt that. Garmin gives instructions on how to do it. Quote Link to comment
+ATMA
I have the same problem and will try this registry change. Sure would be nice to not have to run it from CD. Thanks all for the efforts. Quote Link to comment
Bunkaroos
Not sure if this helps but if you have the 3D Topo or the Direct Route CD's there is away around having to insert the 3rd disc everytime you want to run the program. Go to this post and it will tell you what to do. Bascially you download a free Hex editor program and just change one string in the Mapsend.exe file. It took me maybe 5 minutes to do all of it and now when I want to run me 3D topo I just click on the program to start. When it asks for a disc just hit cancel and it starts right up. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=120846 Quote Link to comment

+poohstickz
As an FYI, you can just create a folder c:\Garmin\TopoUSA for example, then just copy the entire topo CD into that folder, and then simply run setup.exe from the hard-drive. That's it, you're done, no registry diddling needed. Quote Link to comment
