The Plan

April 24, 2004 will be a day set aside to check up on your caches and do any needed maintinence. This will be a great opportunity for groups to meet if they couldn't meet on CITO day. Events might include cgroup cache cleaning picnics. This is a great time to check up on caches.

The Sugestion

At midnight, April 24, all physical caches are disabled. After 4 PM, owners may begin to reactivate their caches. Any caches not reactivated in a week will be put up for adoption and an email will be sent to the owner.

A Result

There should be an Adopt-A-Cache Page where caches that are not being maintained may be put so they cac be adopted.

That time frame would put a crunch on some people who own many caches. Or those that might just be busy or away.

I like the way we do it now, ineffective as that may be.

That's the first original idea that I have seen here in awhile. I sorta agree with Tank, but your suggestion could use some tweaking.

May I suggest nominating caches to be disabled, in the manner you described?

I vote for dropping the "u."

On April 24th I'll be attending a CITO event. The park could not accommodate our group on the official CITO day. Does this mean that my 20+ caches will get disabled and maybe archived, even though I log frequent maintenance notes, including in the dead of winter?

And the answer is not to say "let's do it on May 1st, then." There is no way you can reasonably expect every cache owner to do *anything* on one particular day.

I would use the existing tools here on the site to deal with caches that have maintenance problems.

I'm leaving for a business trip to Europe on the 23rd and will be gone at least 10 days. You might as well archive my caches now as I probably won't be able to get to them until Mother's Day.

Better idea, try the "cache should be archived button" instead.

Yes.

And yes they may be adopted, but there will probably be others in the same way. So maybe you'll be able to *adopt* someone elses caches

[/i]Well then, let's decide on a different day, and if you will not have internet acess within that week, you can e-mail groundpeak and they will extend your reopening period.

I think we should give it a month, not a week.

The Goal

To find out who's really playing. Anybody who doesn't log in for a month or request an extention probably isn't interested anymore. That person's caches can be adopted.

Still, we need an Adopt-a-Cache page. I'm designing one and I'll send it to Jeremy when I'm done.

This day will hopefully clean up the caching world.

I wouldn't mind a way to help easily identify caches that aren't maintained for adoption or geo-trash cleanup purposes, but I still feel your idea is flawed. Marking EVERY cache out there for this purpose is not a good way to go. My caches are maintained. There aren't strings of complaints that haven't been addressed on them. I often post a note, though not always, when I make a maintenance visit, and I do monitor the logs. I am due to have a baby pretty shortly though. I could easily be unable to visit my caches for a month or longer, particularly if I wind up with a C-section and given that I will be baby's only food source for months. If there's no problem, why would TPTB wish to create an artificial one? And if a note alone suffices (who's gonna prove whether or not I physically went to the cache after all), then why bother? Seems to me that the "This cache needs to be archived" log is a good way to put a cache owner on notice. Are these searchable with a PQ? I don't know, haven't tried. If they are or could be made so, those who would care enough to adopt or trash cache out would have a way to look for problem caches needing a followup visit. My $0.02.

Ok, I have a slight problem with this.

The caches are not the property of Groundspeak. Groundspeak is just a listing service. As such, removing one person as owner of a cache giving ownership of that cache to someone else is not something that should be taken lightly or done easily!

Lets say I list my house with a local Real Estate Agent, and they decide that I am not maintaining it properly, can they just give it to someone else? No, their only recorse is to cancel the listing. Now I admit caches are somewhat different, but really how?

If there is a cache I suspect isn't being maintained I can send a note to the owner.

If I don't get a reply back in a month or so, I feel I can request an archive. After that offical attempts to contact the owner, find someone to adopt it, or retrive the cache can go forth.

But if you really want to force the issue, well, I only have one cache. I'll be happy archive it today and remove it as soon if the snow melts if that makes you feel better.

Okay, everyone said the plan could be tweaked so here's my tweak:

The caches would be simply put on probation or something on the day, the owners or anyone would have 30 days to do maintenance and post a note. If this didn't happen the cache would be disabled temporairily and put up for adoption

I agree with the concept, however once you disable a cache and then reactivate it, it shows up as a new cache. I don't like the idea of all my caches coming up as a new cache.

You bring up a very good point... let's start with the First Annual Global Cache Page Maintenance Day!

Clean up all the shovels of "HTML" that have been stuck in cache pages, et al. The world will be a better place, and we'll be able to tell what caches need to be maintained, since we'll be able to load them in our apps of choice. (Oh, and rather than upload a wheelbarrow of "HTML" from Word, would you mind posting a screenshot or something? I can read HTML, and I can read perl, but that post gave the obfuscated perl contest a run for its reputation.)

I agree....ABSURD is the word!

The Person who started this thread has way to much time on their hands...Go place a cache or find some. Enjoy life. Do not worry about something that is not a BIG deal. The old adage 'you can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you cannot pick your friends nose.' So, Keep your nose out of my caches, they are just fine, thank you very much! :unsure:

First off, let me say that I do not own any caches....maybe I should stay out of this discussion :blink:

I am with Snoogans: perhaps a nomination process is needed....

How about a "freindly" reminder from GC.Com such as: Hey folks, it's the 1st day of Spring.....it's a good time to check on those caches"

As others have said, everyone's situation is different.....you could be laid up in the hospital, on a required business trip, etc. on the imposed day.

We DON'T NEED Jeremy having to play the Cache Police......(there's a song in there somewhere <_< )

Seriously though, we are all big boys and girls now.....we should be able to handle this ourselves. For example, I have posted a note on a cache page letting the owner it needs repair, etc. and, they have taken care of the situation.

BTW: I am VERY calm right now :blink:

I like it.

Too many caches end up 'Temporarily Disabled' for WAY to long. Owners last comment is that it will be checked out next week - that was months ago.

Get rid of some of the dead stuff.

While I agree there is dead stuff that needs pruning, a little work and a willingness to press the "request archive" button will do the job locally. I've done that for a few local caches and I'll probably do it for a few more once the snow is gone and warm weather returns.

I guess I should cancel my campout that weekend with 30 Boy Scouts to whom I am introducing Geocaching.

Why would this be necessary when the tool/process to fix poorly maintained caches already exists?

I vote for removing the "u"!

im not into personal attacks so I will not elaborate. a guessing game it stands.

a cache maintance day while on the surface sounds like an ok idea. IT IS lame. we take care of our caches and if somebody doesnt.... we help them. no need to make more rules
