+Natureboy44 Posted February 7, 2004 Posted February 7, 2004 While searching for a local cache, I realized I'd gotten myself into a location where I was geting no reception. The below picture was my solution. How have other solved interesting reception problems? Quote
+TeamK-9 Posted February 7, 2004 Posted February 7, 2004 I've ended up setting my GPSr on top of my van for about about half an hour before going geocaching so it could get a good and hearty sat lock... Quote
+The Cheeseheads Posted February 7, 2004 Posted February 7, 2004 I've ended up setting my GPSr on top of my van for about about half an hour before going geocaching so it could get a good and hearty sat lock... Yeah, my van's got some sort of shielding built into it (when the aliens come, I don't need a tinfoil hat... I'll just go into my van) so that if I don't already have a good signal when I get inside, I will have little chance of picking one up otherwise. On the other hand, with my other car, I can have my GPSr on the floor and still get 12 satellites... Quote
+greengecko Posted February 8, 2004 Posted February 8, 2004 (edited) My most common tactic is to balance my GPS on the flat top of my hiking staff and while holding the other end extend my arm straight up towards the sky - not recommended during lightning storms! +Sparky-Watts Posted February 8, 2004 Posted February 8, 2004 I generally turn it on, and stand outside for a few minutes. Quote
+gallahad Posted February 8, 2004 Posted February 8, 2004 (edited) S'cuse me. But that looks an awful lot like primer cord (e.g. detonating cord) and who knows what's on the other end of it. Now you know that blowing up the interfering culprit isn't the best way to solve your problem. Let's be calm about this. How about walking a short distance away, into an open area, obtaining a bearing and noting it. Then, repeat the process from another direction. If you get three bearings you've got an easy solution. Now, put down the ignitor and calm down. Edited February 8, 2004 by gallahad Quote
+Jamie Z Posted February 8, 2004 Posted February 8, 2004 While searching for a local cache, I realized I'd gotten myself into a location where I was geting no reception. The below picture was my solution. A caption for this photo would be useful, since I can't figure out what's going on or how it helped your reception. I can't recall anything unusual that I've done to improve my reception on any of my hunts. Jamie Quote
+Wander Lost Posted February 8, 2004 Posted February 8, 2004 The Peanut Butter Brigade has one of the most unusual ways to get a sat lock I've ever heard of. But they swear it works. Quote
+bob393 Posted February 8, 2004 Posted February 8, 2004 I go to a clear area and triangulat my position, works sometimes. Quote

+Touchstone Posted February 8, 2004 Posted February 8, 2004 Ha! It's this infamous one. OK, I cheated and looked in your gallery for the picture. That cache has sure gotten alot of air time on the forums. I've been thinking of something similar, but can't find too many abandoned bridges in our area. Guess it'll have to be a climbing cache. +Jamie Z Posted February 9, 2004 Posted February 9, 2004 Muchas gracias, Martmann. Now I get it. Jamie Quote

I thought it was more fun to ignore the GPSr. Makes for a much better story. Wonder if I'm catching something from you through this forum. Whatever it is, keep the antidote a secret. I like living like this. Quote

+Team Fegel Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 Another shot I found that explains things better. Couldn't the picture taker hold the GPSr. Unless its a case of "you cant touch my toys". I dont like to have my wife hold the GPSr, I feel more comfortable, or something, if I keep control of it. +Natureboy44 Posted February 11, 2004 Author Posted February 11, 2004 Good question. The picture taker had previously done this cache and as there to enjoy the show. Since he knew where the cache was, I was left to do it on my own. Quote
+rover-r-us Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 i put my gps on top of my truck for a few min. Quote
The 2 Dogs Posted February 12, 2004 Posted February 12, 2004 I got the strangest look from some passers by one day. I was caching in a large cemetery between some crypts and was having trouble getting a fix.. So I held the GPS up as high above my head as I could. That's when the people passed. Given that most people mistake GPS's for mobiles, I guess it look kinda weird. Maybe they thought I was telephoning the spirits, or on them at least. Quote
mufasa1023 Posted February 12, 2004 Posted February 12, 2004 I walked accross a courtyard in cambridge to get a lock (students arent allowed on the grass) Quote
