Pixie_Tracker
I have occassionally seen some fellow GC's make comment that they take their laptops into the field besides their GPSr. Here is a handy URL you can use to find free wireless hotspots in your area in case your laptop is hooked up with a wireless card. That way you don't have to go home if you need to get online to log those finds... http://pcworld.jiwire.com/index.htm Quote Link to comment

+rusty_tlc
problem is you need to be on the internet (via a hotspot) in order to visit the site to find the hotspot I think you would need to plan ahead. Like getting your Service Providers local access numbers for your destination before you leave on a trip. Edit: if i just had a laptop i would be happy I'd be happy if I had a lap. Pixie_Tracker
You'd want to check out your local hotspots BEFORE going out. Then you can visit those areas when out in the field. Most are places like coffee houses anyhow so that should make for a nice break Quote Link to comment

+travisl
Unfortunately, PC Worlds list is incomplete, and lists far too many pay sites (although I should point out to my Seattle area peeps that every King County library has free wireless access). I prefer to use NetStumbler. Quote Link to comment
+Alan2
Can you use these sites for direct connection to the remote site? For example to send a fax from your computer to a remote fax or computer at its own phone number? Alan Quote Link to comment
+quills
Netstumbler is a great program. I use it for work everyday. Very user friendly. Quote Link to comment
ckhd
I can hook my laptop into my cell phone. It's usually pretty slow, but it gets the job done. Quote Link to comment
