A basic cache is a box and a logbook. Beyond that is up to you. Don't leave food, adult material, or blatant promotional items. Go for unique rather than expensive. Most caches end up with mostly used junk (which is really a shame) so try to improve a cache if you can. Most of the time I don't trade at all, just log the find. The only thing I really go for is pins and travel bugs, but am quite happy with just a logsheet. The best solution is to come up with your own unique signature item that you leave in every cache.

I have found about 27 caches so far and am having fun. I have placed many of the same things as listed above and like to leave fun things or at least trade up. (See the trade up post in the general forum). I liked seeing what others were placing like GEO Coins and tokens. Being my nick is Etrex Pirate I decided to go with the theme and created these this weekend.

Whatever you choose please don't be too cheap and place broken toys or totally useless items that I have seen in many of the caches I have seen so far. It takes much of the fun out of the hunt. If you don't have anything worth leaving take nothing and leave nothing. Just sign the log book and move along.

Happy Caching.

I wouldn't put in anything too valuable unless you're setting up your own cache and want to reward the first finder. Most of the stuff I trade is in the $1-2 range but oftentimes I just sign the log and take/leave nothing.

I am considering leaving either steel pennies or half-dollars as signature items. I'm more concerned with the steel pennies since they could rust, but they're cheaper than half-dollars. What's everyone's take on it?

I guess diamonds are out of the question.

Being a photographer, I usually put a new roll of film in. They seem to go real quick.

I like the idea of leaving coins. I've been to only 2 water-logged caches, and it looked like it was because of bad judgement in containers. If you picked good solid containers to put them in, rust won't be a problem. I saw someone left a 1943 silver nickel in one. When I got there that same day it was left, the cacher an hour before me grabbed it.

I'd think that would be a really nice find. As for rust, how about just putting them into a ziplock? (I'd think a lot of cached items would fair better if they were ziplocked instead of tossed lose into the containers). You could probably get small 2" or 3" zipbags at a hobby shop if you don't want to put a single little penny in a big regular sized bag.

Remember not to put knives or the like in. I have put marbles in and they go fast. I have done that for micro cache film cans. Caribeeners go well. Small bouncing balls like from a gumball machine seem to be liked. Also Foreign coins are good and they do not have to be expensive they are just exotic. I think it is good to place nice things in the cache, but you may want to hold back so you can put more in later. I like the survival gear and batteries some people place in the cache.
