A new little feature was made public some time last night but almost no one knows about it. Seeing that no one has said too much about, figured might be good to spread the word. We now have stats banners!

Signal Stats :)

and

Icon Stats :)

And that mysterious third one :P.

They made their first GC.com appearance on this thread this afternoon, but weve been fiddling with them all morning on another board. They now can be seen on webpages such as this one. And for redunancy have been put on a GC.com profile or two, like mine.

Hey I just like the frog!

See Jeremy really is changing and adding to the site, hes just practing gradualism.

OK, I give up. Where do we find these things?

http://www.geocaching.com/stats/img.aspx?u...a3a0&txt=I+Rock

In the sample URL above replace the digits that appear after "uid=" with your gc.com profile ID. Your UID is available by clicking on a cache log. Your UID will be in your browser's Address box.

You can add whatever text you desire after the "&txt=", but you must remember to replace spaces with the plus sign "+". See the sample above. ^

Neat huh?

Editted - I figured it out.

Click on a cache - then find the log you entered and click on that. You can't do it by directly clicking on the cache link from your profile.

How'd you guys find out about this??

Now - how do you get to the ranking list? :)

How can I change the image?

I see if you add after the text a &bg= followed by a number from 1 to 4 the image changes.

I wonder when we can get some official comment on these new image files? I'm assuming this has to do with the new 'buddy list'/stat-feature Jeremy mentioned.

This was just something fun that Jeremy whipped up on Tuesday, taking a well-earned break after he completed the redesign of the pocket query generator. He previewed it to the volunteer group on Tuesday evening, knowing that we can't keep a secret. I whispered and others whispered.

It is an undocumented feature. If I said more, it wouldn't be undocumented.

This isn't working! I'll keep trying

Still not working...ok, I'll look into this later.

try again!

Mine isn't working...perhaps due to teh exclamation point at the end of my name?

Thanks! I see what I was doing wrong now. I was copying the luid number of the log I made...not my actual uid...thanks!

Wow there's a novel idea. Looks oddly familiar.

Sure does! I was just thinking that too!

It looks an aweful lot like the stats sig lines and banners many of us played around with here back 2-3yrs ago. I think some newbie copied that idea a few months ago and thought it was novel. ;)

I would just like to point out that this story is exactly what some people ask for when it comes to development of this site.

Someone says...well, how come we can't have automagically updating stats banners here at GC.com?

A few days later, in a few hours of free time, poof, it appears in response.

I'm not suggesting that a complete overhaul of the PQ codebase or something requiring grand scale changes should appear overnight or have everything else dropped for it. But it's clear that creation of this stats banner didn't need 3 months of planning and development.

Just wanted to highlight the fact that sometimes these things work out right.

BTW, someone in the General forum wondered how frequently it updates. They logged a find and said it didn't change yet.

I just tested it, I logged a find and hit refresh on the image and my numbers updated.

I'm not documenting it yet, but if I did, I would write that the images are stored in memory for around 2 hours, so the web site wouldn't get overwhelmed by image requests that hit the database every time you view Bob & Sally's geocaching page. It sometimes happens sooner than that, but 2 hours is your best bet.

You'll see Signal the Frog's stats whenever your request encounters an error. He doesn't get out geocaching much.

Yea, but those were not dynamic and available to everyone to use for free. You had to change them yourself. It wasn't a service. Wasn't really even a graphic either. It's just odd that dynamic images dissapeared recently.

Jeremy, and crew, I too extend my thanks for the feature. I must admit that I am completely exhausted from figuring out how to make it work but the reward (like finding an evil cache) was worth the effort.

Gotta love these folks.... :D

Will this be available in our profile?

Any place else we might see stats pop up?

FWIW; It's been brought up in ClayJar's #geocache IRC channel, that some people would like a similar function that does not build a graphic, but simply reports the numbers in text, which could then be used on a website.
