+Nomad and the Librarians Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 My team's signature item is a BookCrossing.com book. There are several problems with this. Several caches are too small or too full to put a book in. There are geocachers who do not want to take a book as a trade item. Consequently, we thought we would create an alternative signature item. To that end, I designed a refrigerator magnet. I have submitted it to the Geocaching admin folk and we are awaiting their approval. Since we are waiting, I thought I might solicit thoughts from others about the design. If you have any suggestions, we would be happy to entertain them. (We do not promise to adopt any of them, but we will give them serious consideration.) I have replaced my team picture with a picture of the proposed magnet for those who want to see it. I have found a place on the net (http://www.fridgedoor.com/cusbuscarmag4.html) that sells custom magnets in lots of 500 for about $130 dollars, counting S&H. With luck, I will be able to submit the design and get the magnets for our spring geocaching start in another month or so. (Things have been sluggish furing the winter.) Ultimately we would like our magnets to migrate across the country, adorning refrigerators from coast to coast. Maybe they can make it overseas one day! Quote
Captain Chaoss Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 Looks cool. Sig items are somethin I hope to see more of in caches, and will make a special trip for. I am curious though, why do you need approval for this from GC.com ? Quote
+Halden Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 I like it. WHy did you have to get GC.com's Approval? I just designed mine, made tehm and started handing the out. Should I have cecked first? Quote
+sbell111 Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 I think if the logo is altered in any way, you have to get approval. If you don't alter the logo, and the use is not for commercial purposes, you don't need it. Quote

Seems like a natural progression to me. Quote
+TeamK-9 Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 That makes sense, but also, I wouldn't recomend buying them in bulk from a printing company like that. You can run out to the office supply store, get some avery business card paper and business card magnet things and just print the business cards out on your computer and stick them to the magnets... I mean that way, you can make them on demand when you need them, and I mean what's to say that you're not going to quit before you find 500 caches, or even 250, even if you put like 5 or 10 in ever cache, you'd still need to find 50-100 caches before you were anywhere close getting rid of them... And what if you like decided after using maybe twenty that they weren't exactly the design you wanted... Quote
+DustyJacket Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 According to the logo usage terms, once you make more than XX of an item with the GC.COM logo, you need permission. XX is low, like 20 or 50 or so. Therefore 500 is over that by quite a bit. Quote
+webscouter. Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 You need permission if you are making more than 25 lifetime units.Logo Usage Guidelines. Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 Use your own logo to represent you and don't sweat the GC.com logo. I have seen plenty of people use that logo on their sig item. One of my favorite sig items so far is a fridge magnet that was hand painted with a simple design. Each design means something about the hide (for the most part) like whether they got skunked the first time). Because of that and one other item I now have a special section on my beer fridge for sig items. It's your sig items and you can use the GC logo if you want. But as a finder of items like this I can tell you which ones I like more and that would be one with your own logo. Quote
+geoguyver Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 I only had ten minutes to put this together but would be glad to work more on it. Please let me know if you would like! Quote
Captain Chaoss Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 excellent. i had never seen that logo for bookcrossing. Looks cool. wonder if you could use it and signal the frog together ? Quote

+DustyJacket Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 Print that big blue card onto magnetic business card material, cover it with a wide strip of packing tape, and you have refridgerator magnets. (That is how I did mine.) Quote

+DustyJacket Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 (edited) I don't know about th various laminating materials. I just checked some year old magnets. The very edges of the packing tape is turning yellow. I assume it is just the beginning.... Edited January 24, 2004 by DustyJacket Quote

Yup....sounds like the beginning of the end......you can find really cheap (cost-wise) laminating material at lots of places. I got mine at WalMart, the kind you don't need to have the $30 machine for. Just peel and press. I got a 5 pack of luggage tags that come with laminating sheets and lanyards for about $3.50 that I'm using for TB Info Tags. Quote
+quills Posted January 25, 2004 Posted January 25, 2004 i think thecard looked better. i'm currently working on a couple of ideas for signature items. i'll make a post when i figure them out. Quote
