Pictures - Cool Cache Containers (CCC's)

Wish I had taken a picture of it and I might have to run back out there just to have it for my collection. Cache GC1Y1RD is called "Don't Rush Me" and the CO took a snail shell, filled it with foam and put a small capsule in there for the log and placed it at the base of a myrtle covered loosely by mulch. One of the best I've seen so far.

Wouldnt Thrushes try to smash it open? Actually do you even get Thrush birds over there? I dunno, but I know they like smashing snail shells open..

I've done a similar one only I filled the shell with concrete. Might be rather heavier than the thrush was expecting!

One of my caches was muggled recently GC1VQ23 and I'll be archiving it once I have it's replacement ready so happy to show the only couple of pics I have of it. Yes it is a bolt cache done to death but It is home made and the DNF's piled up  So it was fun to watch.

The replacement On the river 2 will be the same jetty but a different hide. In hindsight I guess when I was a kid I would have been tempted to climb this structure and "Bomb" into the river, it is winter but I can only surmise that's what has happened and when they have tried to use it for a foothold it has been discovered... that or a cacher has butter fingers and dropped it *Splash*

3 Pics

The first is the jetty it is placed on, tallest pylon on the far left of the picture a slight lean out from the jetty was required to see it.

Then two pictures closer up to show the camo job. It is the bolt on the left... Just to note the white on the right bolt and pylon is seagull poop, I decided to be less authentic and use paint on the cache.

Sorry about the picture size on screen, taken from logs so no chance to resize them that I can see..

To a person who notices stuff like that it would scream at them since the apparent bolt not only has no purpose but does not protrude from the other side. Put a fake head on the other side. It would still look like it has no purpose but my fool more people.

Someone in our area put a hollowed out bolt in a guardrail where all of the other bolts go. It looks exactly like all of the other bolts.

I had the bolt head with a magnet made and ready to go, but I did not use it.

The angle and distance you had to lean out to see the the nut and bolt was the hard part, placing a bolt head in plain view from the jetty gave too much away as it was not holding anything on, unlike the other side as it holds a wooden plank with depth marking on it for the larger boats.

Put it up 15' and we've got a Knight2000 cache! :D

Found this one behind a tree on the ground. The cache was named "Cardinal Sins". It has a 35mm canister lodged into the bottom of it (you can see it in the first picture).

Lets have a look at the description shall we?

A Micro Cache containing a Log only.

Bring your own Pencil.

Additional Hints ( No hints available )

Hmm, no description of the container, no hint about the container.

Do you think that outing it is the right thing to do?

Link to comment

Agreed. No one would notice the blatantly fake bird at ground zero. :)

It's probably fooled dozens of experienced cachers prior to that post.

(or not...)

Takes away they "SLICK" factor. Besides, I would assume it was in the tree and wasn't placed back properly.

The way I see it, if it ain't your CC then don't give up details about it....

Unless it is archived.

The sticker reads:

United States Geocache

Site Logging Station

Do Not Disturb

Oh I LOVE IT!!!

What a GREAT multi!!!

wait is it in the locked box?

and where is the combo to the lock.

Cache page, or it may be a puzzle but that will be on the cache page.

Yes, it was a puzzle. It was a fun puzzle too. In the classic, no-permission-required-or-obtained style that used to be the norm. A few players thought they’d make it more fun by moving the books where nobody could find them.

where did you get the stickers made?

I know Criminal doesn't get on here as much as he used to, and I am likewise curious.

Does anybody else in here know what that box is called and where to get them?

I've got a location that is just screaming for one.

It is an enclosure box. Any electric supply house will have a selection of sizes.

<breaks out the imaginary percentage machine>

Considering that less than 0.0013% of active cachers ever visit these forums, I think it's safe. :D

% of who may or may not see isn't the point, it is the fact that it is not his cache to reveal.

I liken it to if I where to tell you how the raven works, I didn't invent it, I don't own the rights to it so I don't have the right to reveal it's secretes. You are only 0.0000000001 or less % of the population that may see the trick in action so the secret would be safe but that wouldn't make revealing it to you any less dishonorable.

Its the interesting factor, not a sneaky hide

Yep. Be prepared, they are not cheap. Rip out the innards and you probably should fill the holes so the amount of water that gets inside will be minimal. I have one of these out there. It has a plastic cereal box inside which holds maps and bug spray for a multi. It is marked with the GC ID. I used JB weld and pennies cents to seal the holes. (Washers too)

I see this said often. I'd venture to say that those involved would be warned and disciplined before this thread is closed. This thread is a real asset to the caching community.

If you go to a local electrical contractor, they probably have some laying around they would sell you cheaper than a brand new one

Can you see the preform in the crumpled root beer bottle? Cut off the top of the bottle, enlarge the opening with a funnel and LOW heat til it accepts the preform, and epoxy it into place. I used a root beer bottle cuz it's not transparent!!

A friend of mine that knew I was into geocaching came across Baby Soda Bottles on a website:

http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/003903.php

Apparently they are the plastic pop bottles before they are heated and stretched out...waterproof and very strong.

Anybody ever try them?

I read the site you quote and I ordered, among other things, three of the containers to which you refer. Mine have white lids. I haven't put them out yet, but they do seem to be VERY strong. They come with the lids not screwed on all the way because they are pop bottle lids with the ring still attached. The inside seems to be very very close to the same diameter as the mouth opening, maybe just a tiny bit bigger.

The local Hobby Lobby sells something very similiar to these baby soda bottles in the Science section as a plastic Test Tube. 3 for like $5.99.

Neat... but what if someone assumes its trash & tosses it into their CITO bag?

Well intentioned mooks would be my concern as well.

Still, I give it major props for creativity. :P

I have maybe $3 total invested... will place it well away from accidental discovery by muggles... hopefully any cachers will have geosense tuned in and see what they have in their hand. Sadistic placement would be the fenceline along the city dump...but hey, I'm a nice guy! :P

I'd throw the root beer cache away. If I have a bag I am picking up trash although when I see lots of decongestant packages near the cache it doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Maybe if you'd call it something that would help match the hide. Then it ruins the fun of your hide. I'd call it "Tapper".

I hope this qualifies as a CCC, I didn't see a cache idea thread or sub-forum so I posted it here.

This is a work in progress, I'm going to add 2 more magnets I think. It's going to be used under something metal and held in place via magnets. This is the case that came with a pair of clip on sunglasses from Walmart. They case is metal covered in fake black leatherette/vinyl and not a bad size once you rip out the grey plastic liner glued in. I cut out the vinyl and epoxied the magnets onto the bottom so they would hold best.

It's a little shallow, but it was something I would have just thrown away and not used.

Be sure to hide it someplace that is going to keep it 100 percent dry. I suspect that humidity may be enough to pose a moisture problem for that one. You are thinking though and that is a plus.

It is just used as a container. Clearly marked and not disguised in any way. I needed a strong container to attach to something that would withstand the weather and be able to lock. In fact the geocache page tells what you are looking for and the combo to the lock. It's actually not even a geocache.

It is not disguised as electrical equipment or around any electrical equipment which was my premise for the other thread.

I understand the confusion though.

I've never had any luck posting pics on discussion boards, but I'll try. If this doesn't work, I may need some help!

I've been through about half the pages on this topic, and haven't seen this idea. I'm sure it's been done..... any comments?

This is an unused road (pic below). I won't bore you with details as to why, but trust me that it's not a no-trespassing area, and there's zero traffic:

<a href="http://s600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/joehargrave3419/Geochaches/Madness/?action=view&current=6440a354.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/joehargrave3419/Geochaches/Madness/6440a354.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

When you lift one of the 'speed bumps':

<a href="http://s600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/joehargrave3419/Geochaches/Madness/?action=view&current=861052b4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/joehargrave3419/Geochaches/Madness/861052b4.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

This is what you see:

<a href="http://s600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/joehargrave3419/Geochaches/Madness/?action=view&current=61e11ca5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/joehargrave3419/Geochaches/Madness/61e11ca5.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Basically, I used a cordless drill with a masonry bit and drilled (3) holes into the back of the speed bump's glue layer. The center hole contains a fairly common purchasable nano cache. The other two holes are filled with epoxy and neo-dyn magnets. On the road, I did the same thing.... (3) holes that correspond with the speed bump's holes. The outside two contain epoxied neo magnets and the center one lines up with the center hole of the bump, making room for the nano.

When it's placed back on the road, the (4) magnets hold it tightly in place.

There is more to the story, as the hide is part of a series and the clues / theme have a lot to do with the reasoning behind the placement. I won't go into that, as I don't yet have an active 'alternate' screen-name and this cache will soon be published.

Thoughts? Creative or just evil? Been done before? (I'm sure it has, nothing's original) !

And before anyone wastes time with the comments / questions: It is ABSOLUTELY ok to drive to the cache, it's a publicly accessible, zero traffic area that is privately owned and I have written permission to use the area. In no stretched way is it illegal, dangerous, etc. Let's just not even go down that path. I'm asking for feedback on the cache, not the legality, safety, etc.

THANKS

I'm not to keen on the placement considering the guidelines. If your reviewer knew this it probably wouldn't get published. I think KitFox has one like this. I wish I could find a place to put one of these. It's nice to see caches like this.

Thanks much for fixing that up, JohnE5! The cache looks very much like on that KitFox has posted pictures of a time or two. It would be very tough finding a spot for a cache like that, but it is pretty cool.

See post #2999 for mine.

Ten years ago a new onramp to a freeway was built, and a nearby road was effectively shut down permanently. The remnant of the road was leftover, and it happened to have a double yellow line on it. I carved a notch in the bott's dot, and never dug into the road.

I casually added the Botts dot, and made it a cache. The cache name was a total ruse.

Busier than a one-legged cat in a sand box!

If you look at the Google map, you can see the abandoned road next to the circular on-ramp.

Thank you for fixing it! In the time I spent reading up on what I did wrong, I came back and found it fixed! You guys rock... Thanks John. Question; the comment was made about 'guidelines'. In what way, presuming all the statements I clearly made were correct, would this hide even flirt with crossing a guideline boundary? I made the statement as clearly as I did after reading several posts that went off topic debating the legality of a hide. For the record, I work for the land developer and could give every detail of WHY this abandoned road exists, why it's perfectly fine to hide (and find there) and why there is no danger involved. This isn't 'that' forum, so I thought my clarity about it, as well as the straight up request that we not delve into that whole scenario would've been sufficient. No? If there's something in the guidelines I'm missing that would frown on an easily accessible, drive up PNG, on private property with written permission; then please advise. Thanks.
