Well I have been wanting to post one I made earlier this month but since it was active, I didn't want to give away any clues to prospective hunters that might stop in here. I went and checked on it today and found it was gone so I guess I can post it now. Not sure how the muggler found it but then again, I guess it doesn't matter. I had some good comments on it while it lasted which wasn't very long.

Hide and Bow Seek

I had the base covered well with dirt, a large rock, and leaves. All that was left when I check on it today was the one board from the base.

I can not believe how evil some of the contraptions are that I have seen on this thread!

I can't wait to make some of my own!

However, what is really disturbing is how some of the caches are rated......

I followed the link to your cache listing and you had it rated as 2.5. Are you kidding? Either your GPS is a he$# of a lot more accurate than mine or the geocachers in your area are a lot smarter (or I'm just challenged). Either way "oh my god" would that have been hard!

I work in a casino in Cripple Creek, Colorado. The casino that I work at is up grading there bill validators (cash box) so instead of tossing them in the dumpster I am making cache boxes out of them. I gut them out and seal up the cracks with liquid nails or epoxy. These cash boxes is where the money when you put that $100 bill into the slot machine.

Caches like that might become a little more obvious when you're actually in the area hunting for them though.

Haven't figured out how to post pictures here

Using the first link you provided, look to the top of the "Add Reply" screen. You'll see a globe, an envelope & a tree photo. Click on the tree photo, which opens up a small window. Copy/paste your link into that window and hit "OK". That'll take your link and squeeze it between the [img*] and the [/img*]. (delete the *'s)

Nice work! Did you find the tree and match it or the other way around? That sucka just blends right in there! And CONGRATS on first prize!

It just worked out that way I guess. We were at the event and had it with us for day 2 of the Fun and so had it painted up already. Then found this clump of trees and thought GREAT! Stuck it in there. About 10 cachers on day 2 went out to find caches together, really had them stumped as they were in and around this clump of tree's for a while. Almost looking straight at it. It was alot of fun.

That battery case looks like a prime candidate for a CITO. I might last in a rubbish pile but not in most urban parking lots.
You are correct. Left alone in a parking lot, it will be trashed out. However, under the hood of the car that has been in the woods for twenty years, it will last.

This is my new cache I made today, first homemade one and going to use in my first multi-cache!

Some people may have a problem with that. You used a pointy object to place the cache. As long as the item being drilled/altered isnt permanent to the area or from there- i guess it is a grey area.

The only problem i can see if it is in a park or something and the land manager think that you damaged their property placing the cache.

I will be interested to see what others think of this.

Personally i dont like the writing on the wood. Looks like ugly graffiti to me.

Stop nit picking the container is great- he didnt break that branch off to use and the branch is going to be upside down- nobody but cachers will see the 'graffiti'. And since when has drilling holes into dead objects to hide a cunning micro been not allowed??

Holy crap! Who put the sour milk in your Wheaties? It's a good cache that violates NO rules and the writing will be face down and clearly labels the entire thing as a geocache. I'm glad you don't cache in my area. You sound like the self-appointed caching police.

Surely you cant be referring to my comment. If you are i totally do not get it.

I was pointing out that some might have a problem with that. I am not one of them though. Although i am interested in what the final ruling would be on a hide like this.

The grafitti comment is my opinion.

I wasnt even upset about this, just giving some info on it. If a land manager in a park saw that geocaching.com info on a piece of wood. They would not like it.

Are you saying that it is ok to drill holes in dead tree to place caches? The way i read the rules it isnt, but i would like to hear if it is. I just dont see how that would be good for anyone involved.

That would depend on your definition of 'dead tree'. While someone might have a problem with drilling into a standing tree, I can't imagine a problem with a log.

By the way, isn't this thread the wrong place to discuss this? Perhaps a new thread could be started for your concerns.

I have no need to discuss it. I was trying to be helpful to the other poster. This issue has already come up in this thread. I didnt know people would get upset about it.

It would depend on the land manager of the location i would guess.

Here's one I came up with, Nice urban Camo.I've epoxied a small conduit inside and also coated the inside with epoxy.magnets are from a old harddrive.

Is that an actual light bulb? If so, I'd worry about it breaking. Otherwise I LOVE IT!

Yes but it's coated on the insde with about a 1/8" of epoxy and the base is filled up about a inch or so. It makes it very tough

please, go into detail on how to make, i have wanted to do this myself, but could not think of a good and safe way.

I found this wonderful cache called Liberty Key Master today. I was very pleasantly surprised, and got a huge kick out of it. What it lacks in subtlety it certainly makes up for in secutiry. Indeed, this is one of the safest caches I have encountered!

Unfortunately, it may be difficult for the average cacher to visit this one.

This one is gone now. It disappeared when some construction project was going on near there. I think they hauled off all the old safes and got that one too. One of my buddies was the last one to find it intact...

Ok, first ware gloves. Use a dremel tool with a cut off blade, cut off the base about .250” from the bottom. Carefully brake out the element, I used a piece of conduit about 2.5” long with a cap in one end and twisted back and forth it till it went in be careful here. Now you want some 15-20 min epoxy and just start pumping it in the bulb. I used a twin tube epoxy from wally world it measures out correct and I used it all. After you get it in there roll it around to coat the whole inside, This makes it tougher, next put your conduit piece in. Get it were you want it, Turn the bulb base down on a paper, By this time the epoxy should be getting hot, as the excess flows down it builds a pocket of glue going up the base of the bulb to just the start of the curve. This is what you want, It adds strength to the base where the metal and the glass meet, This is where it’s going to break if it does break. With the glue in place let it set for 24hr’s I know it says 15-20 but with that much you’ll need extra cure time. Well There you go, I used an old ceramic receptacle to give it that I’ve been here before you were born look with some hard drive mags glued on the back, The mags are very strong very flat and free..

This one has been out for a week or so now. Golf ball is actually a container that screws open. Inside is "rite in the rain" paper for a waterproof logbook with laminated stash note and a tiny tiny pencil.

It's hidden next to a golf course. I put 6 "real" golf balls as decoy caches nearby to make it a bit more difficult, since none of them are "hidden" but all are pretty much in plain sight

I don't expect it will last long, but so far thankfully people seem to be enjoying finding it.

gball.jpg

though this is nothing compared to the 2 cache containers I have waiting till the weather gets nice enough to get the canoe out.

What kind of container did you use for it? I use nalgene cryotubes for mine. They appear to do a good job in keeping the log dry.

Not dead trees, dead branches. If that is not allowed then a few of the caches ive found are illegal  I haven't throughly read the rules on drilling a hole to place a cache, if this rule exists, but i see no problem with hiding a cache like that, infact my favorite find yet would have been impossible without drilling a hole.

I think this is the guideline in question:

Off-limit (Physical) Caches

Caches that deface public or private property, whether a natural or man-made object, in order to provide a hiding place, a clue or a logging method.

I'm not sure it applies to defacing property that you own though. In a case like this, where you deliberately deface something you own to create a hiding spot, it's a good idea to include this fact in your note to the reviewer. That way, when one of the self appointed geo-police begins ranting about your cache, the reviewer already knows there is no violation.

The worst thing about this hide type is land manager perception. If they stumble across the cache, they will automatically assume that you used one of their chunks of dead wood, and might get snippy. You can avoid a lot of bad karma by showing the container to the land manager before you hide it, explaining that the wood belongs to you.

Thank you CR.

I just like covering all the bases, that is all. I would not want anyone to have a problem with a land manager especially at a park type area.

Like i said before, i dont have a problem with it. But, it is an area where i think caution should be used.

Then again in Ohio where i am you can get fined for moving wood around, so another reason to think twice. Now they have these big signs near me that say you can't be moving firewood/tree material past this point or you could get fined.

Here are a couple of pics of a series of caches I will be putting out tomorrow. They will all be scattered on islands in a northcentral Wisconsin river. The theme in all of the hints pops up as "Son of a birch . . .". I've been working on them off and on for about 6 months.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w208/kn.../P1010514-1.jpg

This is what they look like opened up.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w208/kn...ng/P1010515.jpg

One is a birch tree trunk about 9 ft. long, with a 1.5" PVC (bark covered) section in the middle. Two others are PVC containers, one large, one small, both covered with birch bark. The last one is a log split the long way, hollowed out and hinged, with a small PVC tube inside. They look pretty good.

I drilled a hole into a post that I own. If anybody has a beef with that they can just be unhappy. I actually drilled 3 holes. One to hide the cache behind a blue reflector - OMG!!! I screwed 3 screws into the post too in order to attach 2 of the reflectors!. Surely I'll be judged harshly.

Behind one of the reflectors is a film-can-sized hole with a cache in it. In the bottom of the post I drilled two holes into which I pounded pieces of rebar. Then I pounded the post into the ground. Holy Cow!!! I didn't get permission to put holes in the dirt. Oh, no. I'm sure to give all geocachers a BAD NAME.

People get extreme about "permission". Yes, it is important in some places. In other places it's idiotic to make an issue of it. My post is on public right of way and actually serves a valuable purpose in that it's placed on a 90º curve in the road and the blue reflectors cause people to notice it at night. The cache is actually called Slow Down!

I'll never understand the "you need permission for everything you do" attitude.
