DGG Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Greetings, I just bought a replacement PDA (a Tungsten E). Is there any PDA software out there that has enhanced-added to the hobby? Quote
+mtn-man Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 (edited) I moved this to the proper forum. I would be lost without my PDA. To take full advantage of your PDA it is best to become a premium member of the site. You can then get pocket queries with up to 500 caches. The pocket query has all the information you need from the cache page including cache type, coords, rating, descriptions and even the last 5 logs on the cache page. The only thing you will not have is the map for the cache. You can use one of a number of programs to convert the data so it can go into your PDA. You can also use the file to load the waypoints into your GPS using EasyGPS or ExpertGPS. I am currently using spinner to convert the files and then I use plucker to get them into the PDA. There are several other methods. Edited January 9, 2004 by mtn-man Quote

The only thing you will not have is the map for the cache. I sometimes use a PDA although with less enthusiasm than you express. With cache density increasing by leaps & bounds, there is no other reasonable way (expect perhaps a laptop) to sort through the high number of caches. I'd be lost without the queries and an easy way to take them with me. However, all is not wonderful. Fussing around with another gadget is tedious: 2 different devices to maintain and keep charged; juggling from one to the other; carrying both so they are easily reached and yet protected. The PDA can be difficult to use in the field, especially when weather is bad or the light makes the screen hard to read. And they are not very rugged. A PDA-GPS would be ideal. Too bad Garmin didn't think outside car use for the iQue, or add GPX support to the 60c, or that Mapopolis didn't implement an off-road mode for their Palm OS app. With the Treo 600 "smart phone," we could potentially have a phone-PDA-GPS if there were only the right software available--that would simplify things considerably! Finally, the manual method of scanning the on-line maps is still best for highways between cities because queries cannot cover linear areas. Sometimes I just use the old print-out-the-page method if I'm driving from point-to-point. But, yes, a PDA is useful for geocaching. My preferred geocaching app is CacheMate. I also use HanDBase, a customizable database, to keep track of finds. Quote
+-=(GEO)=- Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 No, a Tungsten E is a real PDA - GPXSonar only runs on PPCs. It's all in the eye of the beholder is guess I'll just stay away from a 'religious' PDA war To each his own... Quote
