ju66l3r Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 (edited) We're getting killfiles? BTW, parkrrrrrr, if you hosts file my site, you won't get to see the cool pictures, like this one: Stereo Image of the Columbia Commemoration Plaque carried by Spirit Rover to Mars. Cross your eyes until the CD on the left and right overlap in the middle and sit back to allow it to come into focus. When you do, you can look up and see the remaining piece of an airbag landing cushion and the mars-scape around the lander. (Bigger version available at My Web Gallery) EDIT: When I get the GPS coordinates from NASA, I'll submit this as a virtual....I just hope it has enough "WOW" factor.... +SamLowrey Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 You will see the picture in 3D. It works with the dogs. With that other pic, it feels like my eyes won't cross enough for it to work or something. I can usually get these things to work. Now as for the killfiles reference, what are you talking about? Best I can tell, it is used to ignore certain users? Can't we already do that? Quote
+Halden Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 I keep bashing my head into my monitor but still no 3D. Quote

+Sparky-Watts Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Ok.....y'all know I'm computer illiterate....so what the heck is a killfile and what the heck does it do? Quote
+cachew nut Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 It's slang for using the ignore feature of your mail reader, ie. Outlook Express, Forte Agent, etc. You usually use it when you've had enough of somebody's posts. It's customary to "plonk" that person to imitate the sound of them going into the killfile. Quote
+leatherman Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 No Killfiles! It's bad enough that we have posts getting edited for no good reason. The weird line in the left image interferes with my Walleye. Quote
+Sparky-Watts Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Oh.....ya mean just another way to flame someone for stating the same opinion too many times? Quote
+cachew nut Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 (edited) It's kind of like getting the last word, since once you killfile someone, you won't be seeing their responses anymore. Here's an example: I'm tired of your constant trolling. Have fun at the bottom of my killfile! Plinkety plinkety PLONK! Edit:typo Edited January 9, 2004 by cachew nut Quote
+1setter Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 To make this stereo picture thing work, you actually need to uncross your eyes so the right and left eyes are looking at different pictures. The pictures are too wide for me by about 1/2 inch. I can't get my eyes to move wider than straight ahead. I copied it to photoshop and zoomed out to get it to work. Quote
+Sparky-Watts Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Alright already, enough with the dang picture. I'm still confused about the TOPIC of this thread.....cachewnut is getting close, but no one has actually said yet, in terms a technologically challenged wet cat can understand, what a killfile is and how it works in a forum. I know how to block emails, and how to block PM's, and how to block people on my caller ID, and how to block speeding cars from getting to work on time in heavy traffic without getting shot, but I know absolutely nothing about killfiles and it's driving me crazy! BTW, the pic worked for me, ok? Let's get on with the topic. Quote
+Stunod Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 If I add you to my killfile list, I will no longer see your posts. Quote

I see, so the person who killfiles the other then gets the chance to be really confused by threads where they can't see what the dead(?) poster said. Leading them to make even more bad judgment calls. That makes perfect sense. Sounds like when we were kids and stuck our fingers in our ears and sang Camp Town Ladies. The worst post I've read here had merit. Quote

+Sparky-Watts Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Oh! <smacks forehead> Kinda pretty much the same as when I was a chat host, we could put people on ignore, and wouldn't see their chat responses........why didn't ya say so in the first place? I gotta get some sleep.......... That would not be a good thing here.......nope.....not good at all.......... Quote
+ChrisCindy Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 (edited) So basically everyone will killfile someone and the threads will never be on topic because half the people wont know what the other half are saying, and then the mods will warn half and ban the other half, then people will get mad and leave shortly before Armageddon and the end of the world but after dogs and cats start sleeping together because it is better then listening to their owners yell and cuss because they can't follow the thread, and we end up all burning up as the planet goes hurtling into the sun? That type of killfile? Edited January 9, 2004 by ChrisCindy Quote

ju66l3r Posted January 9, 2004 Author Posted January 9, 2004 Okay, for those still confused by killfiles...imagine that you're just fed up with everything (and it has to be *everything* with most killfile implementations) that Sparky posts. (sorry, sparky, it's funnier this way) You would killfile Sparky (and it makes a *plonk*ing sound ala cachew nut...because you're usually so full of yourself you want to let *everyone* know that you killfiled someone). Then, Sparky posts something in a thread: Noob1: What is a GPSr? Sparky: I like bananas. RK: GPSr means Global Positioning Satellite Receiver. Sparky: Right, what RK said, but I was wondering why people use a lower case r too... RK: Sparky, don't be dumb, it's to separate the GPS as a system from the r for the unit. What you read if Sparky's in your killfile: Noob1: What is a GPSr? RK: GPSr means Global Positioning Satellite Receiver. RK: Sparky, don't be dumb, it's to separate the GPS as a system from the r for the unit. And then, being lame, you would post "What do you mean 'don't be dumb' what did he say?"....and everyone groans. That is how a killfile is used. But if you plonked Sparky...there'd be like what 30% of the posts that there is now for you to read?....(there was the payoff for using Sparky... ) Now, as for the pic....the line was in the original, sorry, I'd have to photoshop it out, but I wasn't that energetic. I crosseye this one and it works fine...there was no way for me to tell which was L or R from the original filenames and when I cross eye, it still tunnels away instead of toward. Sit further back may help (optimal distance is whatever distance the camera was at when it took the pic and any magnification added to that and I think it's a 6 foot pipe they put the camera on and the pic is about half size...so rough guess of 3 ft from the monitor to see it...adjust as needed...it works for me this size, smaller a bit easier). Then again, I have 2 of those static looking picture books full of these things and I use stereoimages to study protein structure at work...so I'm really used to seeing the effect (walleye and crosseye). Why it was in the topic...a little fun dig at parkrrrrr for his hosts file comment in his locked topic...and some free advertising for my efforts at putting together some of the panoramic shots from the Mars Rover since I didn't see any other websites with them up yet like this... What they are good for is filtering the people that flood the forum with 100-200 posts a day that are just to boost their post count.. Out of the 5 people I would add to that file only one posts anything of any worth. The problem is he posts so much crap around it it's not worth waiting for the 1 out of every 100 posts that adds anything to the subject. So don't look at it as a way to "not see" the posts from someone you dissagree with. It's really Flood (aka spam) control. I've seen it work where the flooders realize that they are all being ignored then either move on or stop flooding the boards. The problem is "No one knows they've stoppped". Sorta like not being able to recover from not thinking and saying something stupid. Again and again and again.......... Quote

I guess I am part of that group. After getting a month ban by a mod for reporting them for breaking the rules, that they enforce, I am trying to stay somewhat non controversial because it is pointless to voice an opinion other the proTPTB. Kinda like in communist countries where only government rhetoric is acceptable. Therefore it comes down to drivel. I answer questions from the new folks but other then that I really don't care about posting anything that means something here because it doesn't mean anything, but a potential ban. Almost every topic has been talked about already unless it is a current affair and most of those are off topic. You could Markwell almost any thread that comes up and close it as there are at least 1 if not more on the same subject already. The only reason I stay and post is because I enjoy posting with some folks here. If it were not for them I would have been gone a long time ago. ( for those that will whine "just leave then") As with our other discussion this is not an attack against you. I am not trying to flame you I am just replying with the other side of the coin. Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 The only people I would use a kill file on pretty much get banned quickly and for forever from this site. That's porn and spam posters. Some of the more interesting get modded and get time outs from the forums. Some of the less interesting don't but should. I'd not use the kill file on either. I've learned that not everyone agrees on every issue, but they are only issues and sooner or later you will agree on something. If you burned the bridge on the disagreements you can't do much when you do agree. People who like to burn bridges are not good allies to find on your side. Quote
+Sparky-Watts Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 Killfiles aren't good to filter the average user that you don't like. What they are good for is filtering the people that flood the forum with 100-200 posts a day that are just to boost their post count.. Well, to be totally honest, I have been accused of posting worthless drivel merely to boost my post count. However, that is not true. I post out of boredom mostly, and other times to interject a bit of levity in a far to serious thread that is, or nearly is, out of control already. I really don't give a hoot about my post count, but look at it as a fun byproduct of posting that I can jest with others about. I'd post no less or no more if these forums didn't keep stats of numbers, just the same with geocaching...it wouldn't change my enjoyment of the game if the stats there weren't kept, either. It seems that those of you who often bellow loudest that "It's not about the numbers" are also the ones who yell "foul" when you think someone is "padding" their stats. What the heck does it matter to anyone how many posts I have? I do my share of answering questions for people, and I do my share of giving my opinion on a topic, but I don't sit there for hours repeating the exact same opinion in the exact same thread over and over and over and over again till someone wants to put me on their killfile list because they get tired of seeing my name a thousand times in one thread about why tupperware is better than rubbermaid for cache containers. And, I'm always the first to admit that I post a lot of "nonsense" and "fluff", because, well, by God someone has to do it! And that's all I got to say about that. Quote
