Can Garmins W/ Mem. Cards Load Mapsource Files?

Hi Garmin Users,

I'm looking into adding Garmin support to GPXSonar. The plan would be to have GPXSonar export the cache data that it maintains to a MapSource file which could then be copied to a memory card (SD/MMC/CF) . The point of this would be to be able to 'upload' waypoints to the unit w/o having to use cables. I already use this transfer method with Magellan Meridians (which support SD cards) and I'd like to implement it for Garmin units as well.

My question is this: is it possible for a Garmin unit supporting memory cards to load a MapSource file containing waypoints directly from a card?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Fabien.

I believe the only 2 units using the memory cards are the StreetPilots and the eMap. The memory cards are strictly for map data. Waypoints, routes and tracks are stored on separate chips inside the GPSr. A cable is always necessary for transferring waypoints, routes and tracks on a Garmin.

Garmin's memory cards are proprietary, so a data programmer (proprietary device with cable) would be needed anyway.

Now... if you wanna talk about the iQue - that's a whole 'nother animal of which I'm not really familiar with, but I'm pretty sure they don't use the memory cards.

Thanks for the feedback. It is too bad that Garmin makes these cards so proprietary <_<

I looked at the features of the iQue. This unit is built around a modified Palm PDA and it supports SD cards by default. However, I haven't seen any mention of the iQue being able to read a MapSource file from a card directly. Instead, it appears that a 'conduit' is the only way to upload waypoints to the system.

Regards,

Fabien.
