Geocaching.com On Mobile Phone????

AJK

Recommended Posts

Just woken up to the 90's and I have a web enabled phone - have managed to get online with it - and navigate to the geocache website. I want to be able to search for caches (by zip), and get the description and coordinates.

However, I cannot see the form fields - If important, I am using an LG VX4400. New browser, not possible, a wap version of geocaching????

Many thanks, Alex

Thought it would exist: So far had this:

<?xml version="1.0"?><!DOCTYPE wml PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD WML 1.1//EN" "http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/wml_1.1.xml">

<wml>

<card title="GeoCache">

<do type="accept" label="Search">

<go href="u=www.geocaching.com@2seek@2nearest.aspx?zip=$(q)&dist=100"/>

</do><p align="center">Enter Zip<br/>

<input emptyok="true" name="q"/>

Search</p></card></wml>

Was almost (not really) working. Didn't realize how different wml was.

Thanks, Alex

Okay - navigated to the url as per suggestion, but phone loads it and shows:

Search by: Coordinate

Zipcode Waypoint Name

or similar - no option for actually entering values, or choosing a menu selection

What am I doing wrong??

Thanks

That sounds like it is working correctly. You need to read your Phones manual to figure out how to select from the three options given.

In the waypoint option I would like to see it pre enter the 'GC' charcaters or assume them if you don't enter them. Enter data on a phone is hard anything to reduce the number of keystrokes is helpful.

Cool didn't realize there was a wml version of geocaching. I'll have to try it out.

My cell phone has a "select url" capability, so I can send complicated URLs to the handset as a short message from the computer to avoid having to enter long strings on the handset itself. Then that page _might_ store in the correct format, as a favorite.

At least the original message can be stored for easy recall later. Not sure if the 4400 has a selcect URL function.

Web access and data services are only going to work in a digital coverage area while out "in the field".

I guess if one wanted to carry a laptop and data cable for the phone, there are even more web capabliities.

This might come in handy..

Try howardforums.com, the LG or Verizon board.

...a wap version of geocaching????

www.geocaching.com/wap

It gives search ability from zip, coordinates, and from existing caches.

This URL does work, at least on my equipment configuration. Audiovox 9500, Verizon, free Waptunnel setup.

http://www.geocaching.com/wap

I get a Geocaching Search page.

Coordinate

Zipcode

Waypoint Name

Any lookup results in a "server error in / System.

"This page requires session state that is no longer available. Either the session has expired, the client did not send a valid session cookie or the session state cookie is too small. Try increasing the history size or session expiry limit."

Then a bunch more info under "Partial Session stack trace:

Onviewstate expire....

Beyond my scope, but I'd say it's not working. Is the geocaching WAP search page currently working for anyone?

Here's a geocaching wap site that is working. I think, my Hungarian is a little rusty.

http://geocaching.hu/wap/

A google mobile search, launched from my handset only listed the HU site. Google Mobile, bookmarked, is a quick way to find WAP/wml sites with minimal keystrokes.

My unofficial WAP portal to the site also works, and allows geocaching.com login for posting notes/finds to caches, and doing queries with "filter finds" automatically "on" when logged in. The link is posted in a wireless thread in the Canada forum.

Cheers

I use the Geocaching WAP site to log a cache when 'out in the field' and I also often get this problem.

Another problem that I get is that I login to the WAP site, lookup the cache that I want to log and then enter my log entry, I get a prompt asking me if I want to send data to a web page, I select OK and then it takes me back to the home page (logged out). It also happens when just searching for cache records.

I'm wondering if it's some sort of timeout issue because it seems to work OK if I go through the process really quickly and just enter a very brief log entry, but if I spend any amount of time do so (i.e. thinking of something interesting to say), it will fail.

Does anyone know if this is a fault with the Geocaching WAP site or is there some setting on my phone that I should change? (Nokia 6820).

Cell phones can display GPS coords directly, but it is tricky, so use some restraint and read al the info first. Watch out for getting billed for activating the phones GPS!

To get coordinates from many Verizon CDMA phones that are AGPS capable check out this thread. Basically you need to be in an urban area where the E-911 GPS system is turned on.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php...07&page=1&pp=10

_Very_ Basic pointers to get GPS coords from phone.

SET GPS TO ALWAYS ON. Bring up the "GPS ONE " section of the debug screen on the cell phone, "Debug" is submenu displaying lots of the network settings and readings. Changing some of these settings can cause the phone to stop working.

Standard warnings and disclaimers apply.

*Then call 922. It appears 922 is kind of a 911 test number. It activates the phones ability to download the GPS coords from the cell tower.

This MAY cause the phone to display GPS coords in GPSONE menu.

*VERY IMPORTANT! Dialing 922 may be charged as a 411 information call by VZW. I was charged for nearly a dozen 411 calls on my VZW bill. I had to call CS and get them off.

922 calling and getting GPS coords from many cell phones also seems to work from unactivated phones. There's no chance you will be billed from a phone with no account.

*ALSO, 922 may connect to 911. If so, DON"T hang up! Tell them you dialed 922 and it's not an emergency.

For more info on cellular AGPS see Snaptrack.com

I tried the http://wap.geocaching.com address on my Samsung phone and it doesn't display the 'Submit' button. If you are having a similar problem, try this link:

http://rtr.ca/geo

What he says. The javascript in wap.geocaching.com breaks my BlackBerry, too, as well as the older Blackberries a bunch of other guys at work who I've asked to test.

Why does a WAP page run Javascript anyway? It's a form, its not like the browser is going to be doing input validation on the fields, all that should be serverside.
