You can place it in any cache you would like.

If you want it to get a quick head-start, it is always good to find a brand-new cache to hide it in. That cache will get a lot of visitors early on.

It only takes 1 visitor to snag it, but I see your point of a new cache because of the interest it will generate.

Can I hide a travel bug in someone elses cache so I can track it or does it have to be my own cache to start?

They can go in any caches. The Groundspeak tracking system keeps track of the placements of travel bugs so you don't have to do anything. The bugs that you find and the ones you own will be in your profile lists, so you can easily check on them.

If you have kids and want them to track it, start it from a cache they have found or if one is available, a cache near their house. That way when it says its gone 100 miles, it will be a more meaningful geography lesson if they can understand where it started from.

We moved a TB from Omaha to Cary, NC for a wedding. My niece knew where it started there and can track where it is and has a better understanding for how far it has traveled.
