Colonel Mustard Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 I just got the spring course schedule from Harrisburg Community College in Harrisburg PA. They are offering an 8 hour non-credit course in Geocaching. http://www.hacc.edu/PROGRAMS/Divisions/WED/wedmain.htm It's even headlined with the GC.com logo. "Participants will set up their own Geocaching.com web accounts and have a thorough understanding of how the game works" They're even providing GPSrs and taking students on a cache hunting excursion through the local area. Instructor Sean Crager $99.00 Has anyone else seen something like this in their areas? Is it endorsed by GC? Just wonderd since the logo is used on the literature. Quote
+Doc-Dean Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 Sounds cool but... So you pay them $100 to learn something you can learn for free?? Now that sounds like a smart college! Quote
+TeamK-9 Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 That really sounds cool... Actually, oddly enough, I just jokingly mentioned this to my mom and she said "You know, I have connections at the westmoreland county community college, I could probably get a course design on this there if I wanted..." She seems to think we have a thorough knowledge of the game and are very good at it because we found a 1.5/1.5 cache in less then twenty minutes.... But really, that sounds like a cool idea that would even make me wanna travel the 3 hours to get there, but I allready know how to do what they're teaching, heh, maybe I should teach my own course... Colonel Mustard Posted December 30, 2003 Author Posted December 30, 2003 Maybe that'll be in geocaching 102. How to get your cache approved in three easy lessons. Actually they are also offering "GPS basics" as a course in addition to geocaching. Learn how a GPS system works. Learn how to upload and download coordinates into a GIS file. Same instructor. Same low price. Quote
+TeamK-9 Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 Does the second course about GPS come with a free global positioning satelite so you always have a fix, or maybe a free GPSr, or maybe just a free cow? ...Everyone could use a free cow, I bet you could get some from Canada real cheap (no offense to any canadians) Quote
Colonel Mustard Posted December 30, 2003 Author Posted December 30, 2003 Maybe.......... but does the cow always point north??? And does she get MAD when you can't find the cache? Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 There is here. I did a cache and for lack of anything at all intelligent to write I wrote out a quick ditty to the camptown racers thing and that was my log. Now it's a local tradtion for the FTF to say something like "Ha! FTF, Doo Daa and all that" It's amazing what sticks. It's never what you think. Quote
+Klemmer Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 Here is the definitive advanced course. Field trip included: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=68272 I DO NOT qualify for the advanced course! Quote
+JohnnyVegas Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 I have run geocaching seminars in the past. The company I was working for untill they went under. We sold GPS gear and one every few months we ran a free GPS / Geocaching seminar. We always had a good turnout. This is a great way for anyone to learn how to use a GPSR. And they all had fun looking for the caches . We set up 4 caches and then expanded to 8 as the class got larger.these are active geocaches that are listed on the web site. We used an assortment of hide types a few types micros and a few types of larger ones, we evan had a two part cache. some are camoflaged. They are all in a local park and all can be found in a few hours depending on fast a person hikes between them. We had two or three people to help out along the way. I may be offering this course at our local community college this spring as a non credit class. Quote
Pantalaimon Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 (edited) Most people (there are exceptions) don't learn geocaching "for free" because they purchase a GPSr (and loads of other gear specifically for their geocaching purposes). So, if the GPSr's are included in the course, as is vaguely suggested by the original post, maybe its a good deal. Edited December 30, 2003 by Pantalaimon Quote
+Doc-Dean Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 Interestingly on the russian geocaching site, you can rent a GPSr from them... Hmm... Quote
+cacheKidds Posted December 30, 2003 Posted December 30, 2003 And I thought the Study of the Twin Peaks tv show was the coolest class ever! Quote
Colonel Mustard Posted December 31, 2003 Author Posted December 31, 2003 I don't think you get to keep the GPS. It's only to use during the course. Quote
+TeamK-9 Posted December 31, 2003 Posted December 31, 2003 Awwww, darn.... Hey, maybe they should give away free Canadian beef... (Once again, no offense to any canadians...) Quote
+Kitch Posted December 31, 2003 Posted December 31, 2003 I wonder if you can get an online course for credits??? Quote

+Lazyboy & Mitey Mite Posted January 1, 2004 Posted January 1, 2004 A course was offered at the local college about a year ago. I believe about 20 signed up for it. As it turned out several of them stuck with the activity. Then another course was offered and I don't think anyone showed up. Some people love guidance. Quote
