+PDOP's Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 From the Fugawi software upgrade site. "Version 3.1.2.550 adds support for ECW compressed map files. Click on a map to automatically download Geocache sites into Fugawi. Elevation data from the Space Shuttle (SRTM) for most of the world is now available and supported by this version. Waypoints, Routes and Tracks can be exported as Shape files(.shp). An approach to a waypoint can launch sounds, pictures or another program." For more info look in this topic in the GPS Units and Software forum. Quote
+Olar Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 At the moment all I will say is: WOW ! I just downloaded upgrade and played with it for a few minutes. Have to go out for rest of day so further comments later. Thanks for the tip PDOP's. Cheers, Olar Quote
+PDOP's Posted December 28, 2003 Author Posted December 28, 2003 Now that I've had a chance to experiment with the geocaching features a bit I've dicovered a few things. Importing of cache waypoints seems to only work as you download them from the Geocaching.com search page. If the waypoints are saved to disk in a file thay cannot be imported from the file into Fugawi. Even though Fugawi has added the treasure chest geocache icons it does not automatically assign the icon to imported geocache waypoints. You have to edit each waypoint individually to assign the icons. Waypoints are named by their GC number only. Waypoints are imported with a link to their cache pages which is accessed in the Edit menu for the waypoint. Fugawi has user defined settings to assign itself the File Association for LOC files. There's also a check box to allow Fugawi to assert the file allocation each time the program starts. This is handy as EasyGPS also assigns itself the File Association for LOC files whenever it runs. Dueling file associations Quote
+tirediron Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 Check out your local Radio Shack, they are clearing out Fugawi 3. Just bought my copy for $49.95!!!!!! Quote
+PDOP's Posted January 6, 2004 Author Posted January 6, 2004 Yet another upgrade Version 3.1.2.553 adds support for ECW compressed map files. Click on a map to automatically download Geocache sites into Fugawi. Elevation data from the Space Shuttle (SRTM) for most of the world is now available and supported by this version. Waypoints, Routes and Tracks can be exported as Shape files(.shp). An approach to a waypoint can launch sounds, pictures or another program. Must be a bug fix as they give no describtion of what changes were made between .550 and .553 Quote
+PDOP's Posted January 7, 2004 Author Posted January 7, 2004 An update on importing loc files on your hard drive from an inquiry I made to Fugawi. "Yes, you can import .loc files that are already on your hard drive. In the Waypoint window, click on the Import Waypoints button, for Files of Type, choose Waypoint and Text Files which should recognize your .loc files on your hard drive, choose them and click OK. They will be deposited into your Geocaching folder in your Waypoint Window. There are no current plans to support the gpx files. Yours truly, NORTHPORT SYSTEMS INC. Kristina Menalo Customer Service Manager" Just double clicking on the loc file once the file association has been set to Fugawi doesn't seem to work. It does start the Fugawi program and create a geocaching folder in the waypoint window but doesn't import the waypoints. Quote
Team Pooh Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Thanks for the info PDOP's. Did my upgrade a couple of days ago. Have another tip for Fugawi users. Instead of editing each waypoint to assign a geocache icon after you import .loc files, you can go to "Settings" , "Waypoints" before you import and change the default waypoint Icon to a treasure chest. Then everything you import will be assigned this icon. Quote
+PDOP's Posted January 8, 2004 Author Posted January 8, 2004 Another tip. Double clicking on a waypoint in a list in the waypoint window will center that waypoint on the map. Quote
+Hard Oiler Posted January 11, 2004 Posted January 11, 2004 Thanks PDOP for the heads up on the upgrade. I've now had an opportunity to play with it and it's great! As the above posts describe you can download from a loc file stored on the hard drive and change the icons. I converted a GPX file to LOC using GPS Babel and it will import the converted file with no problem. You can change the default geocaching folder (in Settings Geocaching) so you can set up different folders for caches in different regions. It will handle a large number of waypoints - I uploaded a loc file with all 1445 Ontario caches and it handled it with no problem although was a bit slow on my computer. It works using Softmap as the basemap although you have to play with the icons to get them to be legible. The icons also shrink when you print so what looks good on the screen doesn't look so good on the printed copy. I also found a problem with refreshing when you move around on Softmap. Waypoints seem to disappear from the screen and I could only get them back by deleting the waypoints in the folder and reloading the loc file. Not sure if this is a bug or because I need more memory or just a problem with Softmap! The result is that when you double click on the waypoint it recentres but the waypoint disappears. A neat feature that I don't see mentioned yet is that you can click on the link in waypoint folder and it will open your browser and take you to the cache. Pity you can't do that from the icon on the map. All in all a great upgrade and makes Fugawi a must program for serious geocaching! Here's what the caches in the Milton section of the Bruce Trail look like using Softmap as the base map: Quote

I've noticed this too. My system has 160MB of RAM and I suspected that might be the problem too. Anybody else notice this? It doesn't happen when I have Toporama maps loaded. Pity you can't do that from the icon on the map. Agreed. I've noticed that the link is imported in most cases (Pocket Query LOC file, GC.com Search Page LOC file) except if you use GPS Babel to generate a Fugawi format waypoint file *.txt. This format imports the cache text name as a comment which shows up when you hold the mouse over the waypoint on the map screen. This might be a better option for real time navigation with a laptop but otherwise having the link is more useful. Actually it would be nice to have both. Edited January 11, 2004 by PDOP's Quote

What I do is go into forms, click waypoints then edit then just close the window and voila, your waypoint is back on the screen. I'm not to crazy about softmap though, it works but the quality should be better. I wish Fugawi would hurry up and release their map DVD for my area, sounds like a better product. Quote

I sent a suggestion to customer service at Fugawi to include the waypoint comment in their LOC file import or, alternately, to add "URL" to the options for import fields for TXT imports. Received a reply that it's "been passed on to the programmer" so maybe sometime in the future Quote
